As the world’s premier destination for art and luxury, Sotheby’s marks its growing presence in Asia by establishing a cultural landmark in the heart of Central, Hong Kong. As part of Sotheby’s ongoing strategy to enhance its global footprint and better serve collectors spanning all fields, the spectacular new 24,000-square-foot space at Landmark Chater, set to open in July 2024, sprawls over two floors, boasts street access and is situated in the most prestigious district of Hong Kong.
Located at the nexus of the city, Sotheby’s Maison will be Asia’s collecting hub, providing an unparalleled reimagining of the art and luxury experience – allowing collectors and visitors alike to enjoy an array of extraordinary objects from across time and geographies.
Following Sotheby’s 50th anniversary in Asia last year, the launch of its Maison marks a new milestone in the company’s regional expansion. This multifaceted, immersive house will serve as the flagship for Sotheby’s in Asia and offer visitors a journey into another world, where the most illustrious objects ignite the curious mind to discover, explore, and collect.
Nathan Drahi, Managing Director, Asia, shares his enthusiasm: “50 years ago, as the first company in the industry to set foot in Hong Kong, we have made this city our home in Asia. With the launch of this exciting new space, we see an opportunity to connect with the next generation of collectors in the region, while catering to our existing global clientele. To that end, we have embarked on a novel approach, operating at street level and harnessing the sheer traffic offered by our location in Hong Kong’s most prestigious neighbourhood in the beating heart of the city.”
Designed by the disruptive Rotterdam-based architecture firm MVRDV, the state-of-the art Maison will showcase Sotheby’s full suite of experiences and offerings, including the company’s signature auctions and masterworks exhibitions, as well as art and luxury objects available for immediate purchase. A Sotheby’s café will anchor this all-round experience.
The company’s new address at Landmark Chater boasts the highest visibility and connectivity, with 1.3 million visitors passing through the space each month. Sotheby’s aims to capitalise on this significant audience by offering exhibition tours and masterclasses as part of a public programme, the details of which will be unveiled upon opening.
Nicolas Chow, Chairman at Sotheby’s Asia hints: “Do not expect a traditional setting of a four white wall gallery space. In tandem with the adventurous, social design approach of MVRDV, our vision is to bring art and luxury closer to communities. Our Maison will be woven into the fabric of the city, where we will offer access to different worlds, from classical to modern and digital – 365 days a year. With our new address at Landmark Chater, we will be creating a bold environment, a door to another dimension where today’s collector will feel inspired and engaged.”
