The following day, despite a cloudy sky, we were determined not to miss the opportunity. The weather was overcast, adding a mystical quality to the climb, and we felt fortunate to experience this extraordinary site. The ascent involves a series of well-maintained stairs flanked by ancient statues and vibrant murals along the pathway. 
Reaching the summit, the breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape made every step worthwhile.
This experience was unforgettable. There’s something special about standing at the top of a mountain, gazing over the lush jungle and the distant plains, knowing that you’re in the presence of a site that has inspired devotion for over two millennia.
For travellers, I highly recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the serenity of this spiritual sanctuary.
Practical Tips for Visiting Dambulla Cave Temple
- Timing: The site opens early in the morning and closes by late afternoon. Visiting during off-peak hours provides a more intimate experience. Opening times are 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with ticket office closing at 6:00 PM.
Clothing: As a sacred site, modest attire covering shoulders and knees is respectful and often required. You can rent a sarong for 100 LKR (40 cent) from the old guy at the entrance. Deposit for the shoes is free but a 100 LKR (40 cent) will be appreciated.- Footwear: Comfortable shoes are essential for the climb and exploration of the caves.
- Photography: Photography is permitted outside and in the caves but avoid using flash to preserve the murals.
- Guides: Hiring a local guide can enrich your visit with stories and insights about the history and art.
- Entry: Entrance ticket to Dambulla Cave Temple is not cheap at 3000 LKR (about $10) but it is well worth it! Foreign kids (6-12 years) pay $5.
