One of the first things you notice in Chengdu is the lack of noise. At noon, when traffic should be at its peak, the city moves in near-silence. No diesel rumbles, no engine roars — just the faint whir of electric two-wheelers weaving through wide avenues.

These scooters are everywhere. Some are covered in transparent plastic shells, others rigged with umbrella frames to shield riders from sun or rain. They zip past in every direction — on roads, sidewalks, and even against traffic in dedicated lanes. It’s a chaotic ballet of movement, where rules exist but are often ignored.

Drivers honk relentlessly, scooters ride on pedestrian paths, and semaphores are treated more as suggestions than commands. Crosswalks? Purely decorative. It’s not malice — it’s a culture of improvisation, where survival depends on awareness, not regulations.

Yet, despite the apparent disorder, there’s a strange harmony. No one seems truly angry. It’s as if everyone understands the unspoken code: move fast, stay alert, but don’t take it personally.

Life on the Streets: A Communal Way of Living

By evening, Chengdu transforms. Families and friends spill out of homes and shops, setting up makeshift tables and chairs on sidewalks. The city becomes an open-air living room.

People eat steaming bowls of rice and spicy Sichuan dishes, sip tea, and chat for hours. Children play, elders watch, and the rhythm of daily life unfolds in full view. It’s reminiscent of Roman neighborhoods in the 1980s — intimate, communal, alive.

I ate at a tiny stall tucked in a courtyard: braised pork with vegetables, served with rice. The owner stood outside, bowl in hand, inviting passersby to join. No sign, no menu — just food, warmth, and hospitality.

There are no beggars on the streets. Public spaces are clean. And there’s a visible respect for the elderly — they’re not hidden away, but celebrated, present, part of the city’s pulse.

In a small stone amphitheater, a woman plays an electric keyboard while a man beside her blows soulful notes from a saxophone. A small crowd gathers, listening quietly — a spontaneous concert under the open sky.

Nearby, an older woman exercises alone in the middle of the road, her movements slow and deliberate. Two elderly ladies dance to music from a portable radio, lost in their own world.

Then, a sharp crack — like a whip. Curious, I follow the sound.

On the riverbank, three men and one woman are striking metal tops with leather whips. The tops — cylindrical, colorful, and spinning fast — dance across the pavement. Each strike keeps them spinning. It’s a traditional game locals call “Tua Lo” (possibly Tuo Luo, 拓螺 or 打陀螺 — “whipping spinning tops”).

The woman, short-haired and sturdy, swings her whip with fierce energy. She tires, then redoubles her effort. The top spins closer to me — I step back, half-laughing, half-nervous.

They invite me to try. I do — awkwardly at first, then with growing enthusiasm. It’s surprisingly physical, almost cathartic. A release of energy, a form of play that doubles as exercise.

Through gestures and smiles, the woman tells me she’s been to Phi Phi Island in Thailand. She shows me photos on her phone, proud and happy to share. Language doesn’t matter. The moment speaks for itself.

The People of Chengdu: Curious, Open, and Present

What stands out most in Chengdu is the human connection. While not everyone speaks English, many are curious — especially the younger generation. A girl stops me while walking her dog, eager to chat. Others smile, wave, or simply watch with friendly interest.

There’s no arrogance, just a kind of cultural self-assurance — a quiet belief that their way of life is complete, even if it’s different. They don’t expect you to speak Chinese, but they appreciate the effort to engage.

And you should. Because in Chengdu, a smile, a gesture, a shared moment — that’s the real language.

Final Thoughts: A City That Lives

Chengdu is not easily defined. It’s chaotic yet peaceful, modern yet deeply traditional, fast-moving yet relaxed, noisy in spirit, but quiet in sound.

It’s a city where people work hard, eat well, and live together — not just in homes, but on streets, in parks, by rivers. Where an old woman can whip a spinning top like she’s fighting a personal battle and then laugh and invite a foreigner to join.

This is real China — not the one in guidebooks, but the one that breathes, moves, and welcomes you in without saying a word. More than a gateway to pandas and Sichuan spice. It’s a city of contradictions and connections.

Come for the food. Stay for the people. And let the spinning tops remind you: sometimes, all it takes is a little whip to keep life moving.

Malaysia and China have officially agreed to extend their visa-free travel arrangement for an additional five years, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral ties and boosting tourism between the two countries. The announcement followed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia and forms part of a broader agreement signed by both nations on 16 April 2025.

Under the extended arrangement, Chinese citizens can continue visiting Malaysia for up to 90 days without a visa, while Malaysian citizens can travel to China visa-free for up to 30 days. This extension builds on a 2023 visa liberalisation initiative that increased Chinese visitors’ stays in Malaysia from 15 to 90 days.

The impact on tourism has been substantial. In April 2025 alone, nearly 900,000 Chinese tourists visited Malaysia, a clear indicator of growing travel demand. China’s outbound travel continues its rapid recovery, with hotel bookings for trips abroad showing impressive growth. According to DidaTravel’s latest data, during the Golden Week holiday, when many Chinese travelers take a seven-day break from October 1 to October 7, hotel bookings surged across various regions compared to last year: up by 190% in the Americas, 78% in Europe, 77% in Asia-Pacific, and 106% in the Middle East. 

The average hotel stay duration for international travelers remained stable at around two nights, consistent with pre-pandemic trends. While Average Daily Rates (ADR) showed a slight increase in the Middle East, they were marginally lower in other regions compared to last year.

As of October 8, the top 20 most popular international destinations for Chinese travelers during the Golden Week holiday were Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, Italy, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Turkey, Iceland, the Philippines, and New Zealand. 

Among international cities, the most booked destinations were Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Pattaya, Kyoto, Kota Kinabalu, Jeju, Karon, Dubai, Paris, Patong, Phuket, Abu Dhabi, Chiang Mai, Rome, Milan, and London. For domestic travel, top destinations included Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Macau. These destinations provide a wide variety of experiences, ranging from breathtaking natural landscapes to vibrant cultural heritage, world-class events, gourmet dining, and exceptional shopping.

Since its opening five years ago, Shanghai’s most pioneering resort, Amanyangyun has demonstrated how – through a culmination of an ambitious feat of architectural and ecological conservation – Chinese culture can be preserved and still enjoyed today. Set on the edge of the city and breathing new life into history, the property has served as a sanctuary in which to celebrate the country’s heritage but also a place to find balance between the modern-day allure of Shanghai and the peace of the natural world. To mark its five-year milestone, a series of new events themed around the five senses will take place throughout the coming months.

At the beginning of the 21^st century, the construction of Liao Fang Reservoir in Jiangxi Province proposed significant risk to the area’s ancient Ming and Qing Dynasty houses and the surrounding camphor tree forest. In a bid to preserve nature and this significant piece of cultural heritage, a migration project began, transporting the historic courtyard and the trees 700-kilometres to the outskirts of downtown Shanghai. After over a decade of careful relocation and restoration, on 28 April 2018, the grand opening of Amanyangyun marked their reemergence as the resort’s very own Ming and Qing Dynasty Villas. Set around a resplendent central lake and surrounded by forest gardens, Amanyangyun presented a rural refuge unlike anything ever seen before in the city.

Four Hands Dinner at Arva

Having appeared in the Shanghai Michelin Guide since opening in 2018, Arva – Aman’s homage to Italian culinary tradition – draws inspiration from  farm-to-table tradition with signature dishes and sharing plates served in a warm and convivial atmosphere. Coinciding with Arva at Amanyangyun’s five-year anniversary, Aman Tokyo’s executive chef, Masakazu Hiraki, will visit the resort from Japan to host a Four Hands Dinner in collaboration with Nicola Frizzale, the resort’s own executive chef.

Born and raised in Japan, Hiraki attended the renowned Tsuji Culinary Institute before moving to Italy in 1999 to gain first-hand knowledge of the country’s cuisine. In 2016, after 17 years in Italy, he returned to Japan and joined the Arva team at Aman Tokyo. While demonstrating his knowledge of Italian cuisine, Hiraki also showcases his Japanese heritage through his culinary creations. Visiting the hotel from 16-18 June, Hiraki will work together with Frizzale, who joined Amanyangyun in 2021, to present a seven-course dinner – a journey through Italy’s culinary heritage. Served at Arva from 6-10pm, the menu will include delicious dishes and Italian favourites such as Carpaccio Di Gamberi and Risotto Al Funghi.

Four Hands Afternoon Tea at the Bar

Surrounded by lush camphor trees, Amanyangyun’s Bar is an elegant and relaxing space which has become renowned over the past five years for its exquisite afternoon tea serving visitors and locals alike.. To celebrate the resort’s anniversary, indulge in an exclusive afternoon tea experience – a collaboration between Aman Kyoto’s pastry chef Hiroyuki Matsuo and Amanyayngun pastry chef Norah Zhou. The chefs will create an afternoon tea that appeals to all the senses. A celebration of pattern, texture and colour, the experience will be available from 2-5pm on 16, 17 and 18 June, and include indulgent treats such as Brown Sugar Pancakes, Pistachio Raspberry Bavarian Cream Cake and Cranberry Scones.

Chef Matsuo started his career as a confectioner in Osaka in 1984 and has won numerous awards for his original creations including the Osaka Governor’s Award. Working together with Norah – a member of the Gourmet Committee of the Chinese Cuisine Association and silver medal winner in the chocolate showcase of the 9th FHC China International Culinary Arts Competition.
