Almost 180 hotel team members joined the Doi Suthep Nature Center on June 26, 2026, to plant the latest 800 native trees across two rai in Mae Taeng and Mae Rim in Chiang Mai’s Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

The 13th Meliá Go Green activity brought together volunteers to plant carefully selected native species that will help restore the area’s natural forest ecosystem, including Quercus semiserrata, Castanopsis diversifolia, Ficus capillipes and Antidesma bunius, among others.

As beach lovers know, Thailand is a year-round island hopping destination. What most visitors don’t know — and it’s one of Thailand’s best kept secrets — is that the islands off the Trang coast are the ideal exotic refuge to match what most people envision when dreaming of a tropical holiday. These stunning islands can be divided into two categories. The first group, which includes Koh Libong, Koh Phetra, Koh Sukorn, Koh Bulon and Koh Lao Liang, is almost unknown to foreign tourists. Even frequent travellers to Thailand have rarely heard these names.

The second group consists of islands known to a handful of beach lovers and visited by locals and expatriates at weekends, yet still overshadowed by the likes of Koh Lipe, Koh Lanta, and Koh Samui. This category includes Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Muk, offering beachfront resorts and some of the most pristine beaches in the area.

You Can Take a Day Trip from Krabi

If you don’t have time for a full island-hopping week, don’t write the Trang Islands off your list. With a little planning, you can visit these stunning islands and still sleep in your Krabi hotel the same night. The drive from Ao Nang to Pak Meng harbour — located at the border of Krabi and Trang provinces — takes about 90 minutes through palm trees, coconut plantations and limestone mountains on a mostly straight, well-kept road. GPS is helpful, though road signs are reasonably clear.

We arrived at Pak Meng around 9 AM and boarded a private longtail boat for the day. The harbour has improved significantly in recent years and is now home to small shops and cafés without feeling overtly touristic. Tourists pay a national park entrance fee of 300 THB per person at the park station before boarding their boats. Several tour companies run daily tours with longtail boats, speedboats or yachts.

Koh Muk: The Emerald Cave and Beyond

After half an hour on the water, we arrived at Koh Muk — sometimes spelled Mook, meaning “pearl” in Thai. The island is best known for the Emerald Cave (Morakot Cave), stunning west coast sunsets, and a good variety of accommodation ranging from budget guesthouses to upscale resorts.

The Morakot Cave is reached by swimming through a narrow, pitch-dark sea tunnel that opens into a secret beach inside what looks like a volcanic crater. It can only be visited at low tide, so always check with your hotel or boat captain for the best timing. Weekends can get very crowded, with large groups queuing at the tunnel entrance — try to visit on a weekday if possible. Despite the traffic on our Sunday visit, the hidden beach on the other side left everyone speechless.

After the cave, we cruised along Koh Muk’s west side past Farang Beach to Sivalai Beach, home to the Koh Mook Sivalai Beach Resort — a peaceful, sandy peninsula with pristine beaches, shallow turquoise water, and wooden villas sheltered by tropical trees. If you plan to stay overnight and aren’t on a strict budget, the Sivalai is a wonderful base. It’s quiet and secluded yet close enough to the local fishing village for an evening walk or a taste of local cuisine.

Koh Kradan: Snorkelling and Sugary Beaches

Koh Kradan is arguably the most well-known of the Trang Islands, famous for its sugary white beaches and turquoise waters teeming with fish. Snorkelling is possible directly off the main beach, and at low tide you can walk or paddle out to the reef without renting a boat.

We had lunch at The Reef Resort on Kradan Beach — a slice of heaven with well-designed beachfront rooms where the distance from bed to white sand is no more than 50 steps. The resort is owned by an Italian and is hugely popular with European visitors, many of them returning year after year. The beach bar, decorated with painted and carved wooden plates left by devoted guests, has a wonderfully personal atmosphere. When you’re done swimming and sunbathing, the Reef Restaurant serves both Thai and Italian food against an unforgettable backdrop.

Koh Chuak and Koh Ngai: Coral, Jungle and Hornbills

After lunch and more snorkelling at Kradan, we made our way to Koh Ngai, pausing along the way at Koh Chuak — a small diamond-shaped limestone islet between Koh Muk and Koh Ngai. Koh Chuak has no beach or accommodation, but its blue waters are rich with fish and soft corals, making it a worthwhile snorkelling stop.

Koh Ngai, our final destination, has aquamarine waters, white sand beaches, and the most pristine jungle among all the Trang Islands. It is home to monitor lizards, snakes, and an extraordinary variety of birds including an estimated 2,000 hornbills.

We visited the Thanya Beach Resort, our top recommendation for guests seeking a romantic escape on Koh Ngai. Balinese-style teak villas face the beach, a spacious swimming pool sits amid a magnificent tropical garden, and frangipani bushes in every colour fill the air with fragrance. It’s no surprise the Thanya is popular as a honeymoon destination. From November to April, Tigerline ferries stop just off Koh Ngai on the route between Phuket and Koh Lipe, while longtail boats can be rented in Pak Meng for independent island hopping.

We ended our afternoon on the beach at Koh Ngai with a final swim. A massive school of fish surfaced around us — expanding and contracting like a living cloud. The horizon slowly shifted from blue to gold as sunset approached.

The Journey Back

We began the return trip to Pak Meng dock just before dark and arrived in Krabi around 8 PM — joyful, relaxed, and enchanted once more by the breathtaking scenery of southern Thailand.

Singapore is a city of many perspectives. From the ground, it’s a marvel of urban planning. From a rooftop bar, it’s a sea of lights. But from a cable car cabin suspended 100 metres above Keppel Harbour? That’s when Singapore truly takes your breath away. I experienced this firsthand during my media trip, thanks to an invitation from Mount Faber Leisure Group. The evening was carefully curated: board the newly launched SkyOrb cabin at HarbourFront, glide across to Sentosa, enjoy a traditional dinner at Good Old Days Singapore Flavours, and end the night with the Wings of Time Fireworks Symphony. What followed was an evening of unforgettable views, delicious food, and pure childlike wonder.

The SkyOrb Cabin: A First-Class Experience in the Sky

I began my journey at the HarbourFront Cable Car Station, just a short walk from HarbourFront MRT. The moment I stepped into the SkyOrb cabin, I knew this was not an ordinary cable car ride.

The SkyOrb is the world’s first chrome-finished, spherical cable car cabin. Unlike the standard transparent cabins, this one feels special – almost futuristic. The interior is sleek, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. I felt genuinely pampered as the cabin began its smooth ascent.

But the real star is the view. Surrounding windows and a glass floor beneath your feet offer sweeping vistas of the city skyline, the shimmering sea, and the lush greenery of Mount Faber and Sentosa. Watching the busy port below, with its massive container ships looking like toys, was mesmerising.

I boarded at HarbourFront and took the Mount Faber Line towards Mount Faber Station. The whole trip lasted about 22 minutes: I went first to Mount Faber but did not get off. The cabin turned back towards HarbourFront and continued on to Sentosa. From there, I exchanged lines and boarded another cable car on the Sentosa Line to reach Beach Station – where both the restaurant and the fireworks show were waiting. Those 22 minutes were enough to take photos, breathe in the moment, and simply stare in awe.

A Seamless Network Across the Island

The entire cable car network is seamless. You can hop on and off at six stations: Mount Faber, HarbourFront, Sentosa, and Imbiah Lookout, Sensoryscape and Siloso Point. A five-minute walk connects Imbiah Lookout to Sentosa Station. And then there is the Monorail with three stations. It is an efficient, well-designed system that makes exploring the island effortless.

If you have time, the whole area is worth exploring. Unfortunately, I did not have enough time to do so – but that only gives me a reason to return.

Good Old Days Singapore Flavours: A Taste of Local Heritage

After the cable car ride, I made my way to Good Old Days Singapore Flavours, a family-friendly dining destination located at Central Beach Bazaar in Sentosa.

The restaurant serves a variety of local favourites, and I was eager to try them. On the menu: Hainanese Chicken Rice (Singapore’s national dish), Singapore Laksa (spicy coconut noodle soup), and their signature Good Old Days Noodles.

I opted for the Laksa and a side of chicken rice. The broth was rich, creamy, and had just the right kick of chilli. The chicken rice was fragrant, the meat tender. It was exactly the kind of comforting meal you need before an evening show. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly. Families with children, couples, and solo travellers like myself all felt welcome. The staff were attentive without being intrusive.

Wings of Time Fireworks Symphony: A Spectacle of Light and Sound

At 7:30 PM, I walked towards the Wings of Time show area. By 7:40 PM, the show began – and it did not disappoint.

Wings of Time Fireworks Symphony is Singapore’s only daily fireworks show. Recently upgraded to feature even more fireworks, this 20-minute outdoor spectacle combines 3D projection mapping, state-of-the-art lasers, robotic water fountains, giant water jets, and spectacular fireworks, all woven together with an uplifting soundtrack.

The story follows two young heroes, Shah and Rachel, as they travel through time and discover the wonders of nature, courage, and friendship. It sounds simple, but the execution is breathtaking. Water jets shoot high into the air. Lasers cut through the night. Fireballs burst from the stage. And above it all, fireworks explode in perfect sync with the music.

I have not watched other night shows in Sentosa, but I can say this: I loved every second of it. Even as an adult, I found myself smiling like a child.

The Walk Back: Sensory Magic in the Dark

After the fireworks ended, something unexpected happened. I had to walk along a green path to reach the cable car station – and that walk became one of the most memorable parts of the evening.

The path was lined with amazing video and audio features. Small screens embedded in the greenery displayed nature scenes. Speakers hidden among the trees played soft music and sounds of the rainforest. The vegetation smelled so good – fresh, earthy, slightly sweet.

In the middle of the evening, the sky was dotted with small clouds. The air was warm but not uncomfortable. It was mesmerising. I slowed down. I breathed deeply. I did not want the walk to end.

This sensory path, often called the Sensoryscape on maps, is a hidden gem. Many visitors rush past it on their way to the cable car. Do not make that mistake. Take your time. Let the path work its magic.

Only after the fireworks ended did I get the chance to walk along that green path. I was glad I did.

The Return Journey: Unforgettable

I then got back on the cable car to return to town. The ride back was quieter. The city lights sparkled below. The sea reflected the moon. I sat in silence, replaying the evening in my head.

The SkyOrb cabin, the delicious local food, the fireworks symphony, the sensory walk – everything came together perfectly. It was not just a series of activities. It was a journey – from the sky to the sea, from day to night, from the modern city to the natural island.

I only wish I had more time to explore Sentosa itself. The island has so much more to offer: beaches, adventure parks, nature trails, and luxury resorts. But that is a good reason to return.

How to Get There

You first fly or travel to Nairobi. From there, by road the journey takes around five to six hours by jeep — long but scenic. By air, small charter planes fly from Nairobi to airstrips inside Masai Mara in around 45 minutes. Many safari packages include transport, making it straightforward to arrange.

Tips for the Best Experience

Wake up early for morning game drives when animals are most active. Carry a camera with good zoom. Wear comfortable clothing in neutral colours. Always follow your guide’s instructions and keep a safe distance from animals. Drink plenty of water — the heat and activity add up quickly. Respect nature and leave no waste behind.

It looks like a natural swimming pool. And all around us, rising dramatically from the emerald greenery, were the tall karst mountains that Krabi is famous for—their limestone cliffs towering over the mangroves like ancient guardians. The view was simply breathtaking.

We found the designated swimming area and jumped in. The water was cool and refreshing, flowing from a natural spring out to the sea. You can rent a kayak here too, but we opted just to float and stare up at the intertwining branches of the trees above.

We spent about 3 hours exploring, including a stop at a “Monkey Beach” where we watched macaques playing in the trees.

One piece of practical advice before you go: always carry water with you. The Thai heat and humidity are no joke, especially when you are kayaking under the midday sun or hiking the nature trails at Tha Pom. There are small shops at the entrances of these parks, but once you are deep inside the mangrove canyons or floating in those hidden lagoons, there are no vendors in sight. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly. We each carried a reusable 1.5-liter bottle, and we finished every drop by the time we returned to shore. Trust me, you will thank yourself later.

How paradise is suffocating under traffic, waste, and its own global success

Bali — from a small, archaic island on the Ring of Fire, to the “Island of the Gods” discovered by tourism, to an island drifting into post-capitalist consumer chaos.

Did I make a mistake back then?

When I traveled through Southeast Asia, captivated by the beauty of its countless islands, I chose Bali as my place to live. It could just as easily have been Lombok, Flores, or an island in Thailand—but Bali scored highest on my personal scale. There was culture, a distinct spirituality, and a vibrant alternative scene in Ubud.

At the time, there was still abundant nature, little traffic, and no visible waste problem.

I lacked foresight. I made no projections about what the growing streams of tourists would eventually bring. It wasn’t only the travelers and Indonesians from other islands coming to Bali for work who turned it into one of the most densely populated places on earth. There were also people like me—foreigners who didn’t just come for a holiday, but chose to stay.

People from all over the world who saw Bali as the most attractive place to live in Asia: entrepreneurs, retirees, digital nomads, artists, healers, DJs, developers, restaurant owners. They all came seeking something—opportunity, freedom, meaning. Most stayed. And every year, more arrive.

With this additional influx of non-Balinese residents, the island soon became overwhelmed.

The government failed to keep pace with this development. No effective systems were created to manage waste or traffic. The narrow roads are hopelessly congested. Garbage is not systematically handled—it accumulates, spilling into daily life.

So where does this lead?

Can Bali still regain control? Or is this already a lost battle—an island slowly collapsing under the weight of its own success?

And what about me? Do I have to admit that I failed to see far enough ahead? Will I one day have to leave in order to stay healthy?

I began to wonder how other expats living in Bali deal with these issues, and how deeply they are affected by traffic, waste management, and the sheer density of the population. So I asked friends who have lived here long-term how these developments are shaping their perspective on staying—or leaving.

One informant who has lived in Bali for 25 years,  and has seen stories like the following, shared her experience:

Bali’s trash burning problem has just reached new toxic heights

“After years of suffering from locals burning plastic, rubber, and construction debris in small fires next to their homes, I was relieved when a regulation was introduced prohibiting the burning of household waste, with a fine of 50,000 rupiah. From then on, garbage collection became regular—twice a week, costing around 100,000 rupiah per month.

Only occasionally would someone refuse to pay even a small amount—around €2.50—for weekly collection and continue burning their waste. But at least there was now a system in place, and complaints could be made.
Eventually, waste collection became properly established.

But now, it has begun again.
In 2026, neighbors started burning their trash once more after the island’s main landfill was abruptly closed by government decree. The idea was that residents should separate plastic, paper, and glass for collection, while burying organic waste themselves.

A short-sighted solution.

Who, with only 100 square meters of land, has space to create a functioning compost system? And what about construction waste or materials that cannot be recycled or buried?

Rumor has it that a new shopping mall is planned next to the landfill site, and the investor did not want unpleasant odors nearby—so pressure was applied to shut it down.

There has been international effort to tackle Bali’s waste problem:, years earlier, a French company had proposed building a waste-to-energy incineration plant near Gianyar. But excessive permit fees—from both government authorities and, as is common in Bali, the local adat structures—made the project economically unviable. It would have taken over 15 years to turn a profit. The investor withdrew. The project collapsed.

And now, the situation has reached a critical point.
Hotel underground parking areas are filling up with garbage bags that are no longer being collected. Without a functioning system, the only alternatives seem to be uncontrolled burning. Only recently has the government begun to react. The landfill has been temporarily reopened for two months to deal with the accumulated waste.

But temporary measures are not enough.

Something fundamental has to change. After all, six million tourists per year now pay a €9 tourism levy—a kind of visitor tax—intended to support waste management. Surely, that should be sufficient to finally build proper infrastructure, perhaps even a modern incineration facility.”

I went on to speak with another expat, a friend from Switzerland, Tom, who chose Bali as his home after many years in Malaysia and Thailand, and who is deeply familiar with life in Southeast Asia.
He offered a different perspective:

“There have always been critical voices on these issues. Even back in 2000, when I was living on Koh Samui, traffic, waste, and development were exactly the same concerns. In that sense, it’s nothing entirely new.

What often changes is ourselves.
The longer you stay in one place, the more you begin to notice its downsides. And sometimes the grass on the other side suddenly looks greener. Ultimately, much in life is a compromise—and living in one place is no different. You decide what you can live with and what you cannot.

For me, the scooter traffic here even has a certain charm—if you are willing to engage with it. These small ‘freedom rides’ give you a different connection to a place. You notice things that remain hidden when you sit in a car: smells, light, people, little scenes by the roadside.

Personally, I even appreciate a certain degree of this chaos.
Of course, waste management could be better organized—that’s obvious. But where I live, it functions reasonably well. And when I recently spent two weeks in Phuket, (Thailand), I realised it’s not that different there. In Patong, we were just as stuck in traffic as we are here in Bali.
In the end, you have a choice. You can let it frustrate you every day, or you can consciously adapt.
That doesn’t mean ignoring the problems. But for me, Bali is still a place where I feel enough freedom, movement, and inspiration to accept the compromises.

Perhaps the real question is not only how Bali is changing—but how we deal with change when a place we once idealised no longer lives up to its image.”

And yet, while these reflections weigh on me—casting grey shadows across my once bright Bali daydreams—something else happens.

I call a Gojek (motorbike taxi) to take me home. As if on cue, the sky opens and heavy rain begins to fall. Perfect timing. Barely have I settled onto the back of the motorbike when the driver, despite the downpour, begins to sing cheerful Indonesian songs.

And just like that, the feeling returns—that I don’t want to leave. That this is exactly where I belong. Because Bali is more than a waste problem, more than traffic, more than the visible symptoms of imbalance. These things may, somehow, be resolved.

But above all, Bali is its people—who, day after day, remind you with their warmth, humor, and spirit why you came here in the first place.
