Anchored by a singer and dramatic light show, to a backdrop of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed bay’s silhouetted limestone karsts, Ambassador Cruise II’s 1.5-hour evening “mini-show” “Love in the Bay” on the dinner cruise took out the second national record. Love in The Bay features performances by renowned Vietnamese singers Phuong Thanh, Luong Bich Huu and Vicky Nhung.

Since its debut in February 2023, Ambassador Cruise II, which offers both a luxurious eight-hour day cruise followed by an exquisite four-hour dinner cruise, has welcomed hundreds of thousands of guests.

Elegantly designed, Ambassador Cruise II features spacious sundecks across two floors that total 324sqm and 250sqm, affording 360-degree vistas of Halong Bay and its myriad limestone karsts. Ambassador Cruise has launched a luxurious new day cruise that makes the most of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Halong Bay’s limestone karst-studded waters and key attractions such as Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island. Cruisers get up close and personal with three of Halong Bay’s most spectacular attractions as part of the seven-hour cruise itinerary. The itinerary checks out the bay’s largest and most compelling cave, Sung Sot, home to myriad stalactites in all sorts of unique forms. Via a kayak or bamboo boat rowed by a local, passengers enter and exit stunning Luon Cave’ self-contained lake, surrounded by towering cliffs and lush vegetation, through a 100-metre long limestone arch. Afterwards cruisers visit picturesque Titov Island, swimming at its crescent moon-shaped beach and ascending some 450 steps to reach its peak and soak up panoramic views of the bay.

For the first time in its history, NCL will deploy the most ships in this part of the world for an extended season of bucket-list-worthy voyages from 15 departure ports, including Auckland, New Zealand; Bali, (Benoa) Indonesia; Bangkok (Laem Chabang), Thailand; Manila, Phillippines; Papeete (Tahiti), French Polynesia; Seoul (Incheon), South Korea; Singapore; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan; Vancouver, Canada; Sydney, Melbourne and for the first time, Cairns, Australia, and Lautoka, Fiji. This December, Norwegian Sun will make her Australian debut, arriving in Brisbane and Melbourne on 18 and 21 December 2024, following a leisurely 18-day French Polynesia and South Pacific sailing, which departs Papeete on 3 December and visits eight ports. She will sail a section of 12-to-15-day voyages between Australia and New Zealand, including a new collection of NCL-first itineraries to the Great Barrier Reef and South Pacific between Cairns and Lautoka, Australia, which is also NCL’s first turnaround in both ports. She will also sail six island-hopping French Polynesia cruises between Fiji and Tahiti and two Asia cruises through 21 May 2025.

From November 2025 to March 2026, Norwegian Sun will sail a selection of 11-to-15-day itineraries exploring Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and other highly sought-out destinations in Southeast Asia. There are also a number of different entertainment options on the cruise ship, for those who don’t want to venture out. These will be announced closer to the departure date. For those who would rather relax in their hotel, the ships have WiFi, meaning you can play games such as Solitaire, or stream movies to your television.

In addition, Norwegian Sky will debut in Asia in January 2025, offering select Japan and Southeast Asia cruises ranging from 10-to-17 days through March 2025.

Luxurious Ambassador Cruise is teaming up with conductor Dong Quang Vinh to stage Halong Bay’s first orchestral cruise, showcasing instrumentalists, opera singers and ballet dancers in what’s poised to be a remarkable sunset concert.

The inaugural “Dreamy Voyage – Symphony of Heritage” on 22 December this year will begin with a red-carpet wine reception at Ambassador Lounge at Halong International Cruise Port from 3pm. Guests will then board Ambassador Cruise II for the concert in the UNESCO World Heritage site from 4.45pm – 6.30pm followed by a buffet dinner on the lavish vessel.

Dubbed “Vietnam’s music ambassador” by domestic and international media for his ongoing efforts to promote Vietnamese music to the world, Vinh will conduct Suc Song Moi Orchestra during the cruise. Featuring 30 Vietnamese instrumentalists, the orchestra will play four chapters, with four to five songs apiece. The chapters comprise classical opera and ballet music, Vietnamese music, film scores, and Christmas carols.

The program, to feature performances by award-winning tenor Nguyen Truong Linh and soprano Trang Bui, is packed with iconic music. The two seascapes are virtually interchangeable, but the lack of tourist boats gives Lan Ha Bay a more isolated appeal.

The highlight of the Ambassador Dinner Cruise evening was undoubtedly the dinner. We indulged in a lavish feast with two menu options: International cuisine, a selection of characteristic style cooking from many nations around the world; and Thai cuisine, highlights on casually prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge. Ambassador Dinner Cruis style is to create a recurring theme and change it every 2 weeks, and that particular week was dedicated to Thailand.

The variety of dishes served was impressive, catering to diverse tastes, including Leonardo‘s more selective palate. The waitresses were incredibly considerate, offering child-friendly options and chatting with Leonardo to make him feel at home. The fact that my child, who can be a picky eater, devoured his meal was a testament to the quality of the cuisine.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Halong Bay, the sense of serenity and tranquility was palpable. This all changed when we transferred to the 4th floor Sundeck to enliven the night and enjoy an evening of music and dance. The stage first featured live music by the Filipino band. This followed by an upbeat DJ remix and hot dance performance by models and professional dancers. But the cherry on the cake was the appearance of the Thai ladyboys cabaret and dance. It was a fascinating and sizzling entertainment experience that my boy and I will not forget.

Leonardo by the company van at 6am

The cruise adventure for Leonardo and I started at 6am when we got picked up in central Hanoi by Ambassador Cruise bus for the transfer trip to Halong Bay. The vehicle was a 10 seater super luxurious van, all black, with leather reclinable seats larger than those on an airplane. The driver wore Ambassador Cruise black uniform and looked very professional, as did the girl who checked the names in the booking list. We finally left for the journey, and let me tell you, forget about those trips where you want to scream at every overtaking, with a driver who pushes the vehicle engine as if he was on a race, or as if delivering passengers to destination was a matter of life and death. I have had plenty of those in my traveling life. This driver drove gently, and never over 80 km per hour on the not so busy motorway that runs from the capital Hanoi to Halong.

The landscape quickly changed from urban, cemented, polluted and high-rise Hanoi, to a land of scattered quaint villages with plenty of pagodas and rice fields. What a paradise. Leonardo looked out of the windows mesmerised, and at some point he turned to me and said: “Papà, this is so beautiful, thanks for bringing me here”. I was touched. The driver did the customary 30 minutes pit stop at a refreshment area where we found food, drinks and toilets, then off we were again, reaching Halong at about 8.30am. We drove straight to the Halong International Cruise Port, got dropped off and walked to the Ambassador Cruise II, an amazing ship by the look of it.

After the ticket formalities at the ship reception, we were given our identification bracelets to be worn for the day, a key to our room, and off we went to relax and enjoy our room and balcony while the ship sailed off and passed dozens of majestic limestone islets in Halong Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay. Leonardo and I had the time for a good swim in the big open air jacuzzi pool on the 3rd floor deck before we were summoned by the staff for the boat trip to Sung Sot Cave.

There were a few speedboats towed by the ship, and one of those took us to the cave site in a matter of 5 minutes; at the entrance booth, we showed our blue bracelets and were directed to a flight of steps that took us to the largest and most magnificent cave in the bay. Sung Sot Cave features marvellous and mysterious thousand-year-old stalactites in a variety of unique forms. Both Leonardo and I were speechless, and so were the hundreds of people who walked the long path inside the massive interior of the cave. It is a circular walk, so we ended up to another end of the islet, after having walked what must have been hundreds of steps. We were exhausted but happy.

Back on the speedboat, the next destination was Titov Island, a marvel outcrop sided by a crescent moon-shaped sandy beach. There we swam in the turquoise waters; the staff asked us if we wished to climb to the top of the Island to enjoy a breathtaking 360 degrees view of the bay, but we gently declined as we were too tired and, in truth, quite hungry too.

Well, our bellies did not need to wait long: as soon as we got back to the Ambassador Cruise ship, what awaited us was a sumptuous buffet lunch comprising asian soups, asian noodle and rice dishes, sushi of all types freshly prepared in front of our eyes by well-trained kitchen staff, sashimi, sea snails, prawns, squid and other seafood, as well as meat. On the outside deck, three uniformed chefs worked on a flat grill, roasting chunks of tuna and beef steaks on the spot, all accompanied by roasted potatoes and mushrooms.

Staff kept passing with drink carts refilling our need to wash down all those delicacies. The food was premium, and we went back several times to get more servings of the so many choices available. I had not seen Leonardo eat like that for a long time. At 1 o’clock a Filipino duo, voice and piano, started their performance playing contemporary and classic songs so professionally that they caught all diners’ attention. Vietnamese coffe prepared to perfection and a good choice of desserts completed the culinary experience.

It was at that point that I decreed: What a well-organised cruise. I had promised myself to wait until the end of the day before giving my judgement, but at 2pm I was ready for it. Professional staff, a well-timed program, amazing food, and a spacious room that has nothing to envy to one in a 5 star hotel. The guests seemed to be quite a lot, about 500 I was later told, yet there was lots of space in the corridors, in the dining area and on the upper decks to move around freely.

Our bellies were so full and we both felt sleepy, so we retired to our room, had a shower and planned a rest, but the day had more surprises. The loudspeakers on the boat announced the program of the afternoon, which I did not want to miss of course. At 2,30 pm we went for an amazing boat trip to Luon Cave, one of the most unique caves in Halong Bay, as it features a self- contained lake inside a closed arch-shaped mountain. For the tour of the lagoon, there was the option of either kayaking or sitting on a traditional raft rowed by a local. The day was steaming hot and, considering I was with Leonardo, I decided to opt for the latter. Luon Cave lagoon turned out to be an amazing place indeed, and the sight of Vietnamese rowers propelling rafts full of customers by energetically pushing their long rows was quite suggestive.

Back on the ship, we listened to the live band at the restaurant on the 3rd floor, and later went to look at an interesting cooking class at the 4th-floor bar. We strolled a bit more; Leonardo was offered an ice cream by the ship manager, and we had the last pool dip of the day. It is worth mentioning that all these activities are not compulsory, and guests who prefer to stay onboard can get pampered at the ship’s Atelier de Beauté Spa.

At 5pm the cruise reached its end. I saw happy faces around me, and we both had happy faces too! Most customers looked disappointed that the experience was over and that the cruise had reached the harbour. We checked out at the boat reception and disembarked.

Reflecting on the day we had, I admit I had been a bit worried that this cruise was something more for adults and that my kid would get a bit bored, but I had to change my mind: Leonardo was happier than me, as he unweariedly roamed around the boat the whole day, socialising with the staff, eating and enjoying the various activities. He was not bored at all. And soon after we disembarked, he threw to me another of his surprise sentences: “Papà, this boat is amazing, I wish I could stay on it for a million days!”. Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son in Vietnamese) is a cluster of five limestone peaks, each named after an element of Chinese Yin-Yang philosophy, located not far from Danang in Vietnam. This riveting attraction has long been a Buddhist worship site as well as a famous tourist complex for travelers from around the world. It is part historical treasure, part natural wonder, part spiritual setting, and totally beautiful.

Marble Mountains is home to a network of caves, tunnels, towers, and pagodas built by Mahayana Buddhists and the Nguyen Dynasty kings. They occupy a large area and still have a mysterious atmosphere of a truly historical and cultural landmark despite the impact of tourism.

History and the legend

For centuries, Marble Mountains has held special significance for the people of Central Vietnam. The ancient Cham revered these karsts as a spiritual site, and Vietnamese emperors from Hue and legendary generals passing through paid visits to the peaks, adding to their store of legends. One legend holds that this mountain complex was formed from a dragon egg that emerged from Non Nuoc beach. After a thousand days and a thousand nights had passed, the egg hatched and out came a beautiful girl. The egg’s shell was left on the beach and grew into the magical Marble Mountains.

Marble Mountains are also a well-known pilgrimage site, with peaks, caves, tunnels and temples all waiting to be discovered. The structures and shrines blend harmoniously with nature: vine tendrils drip from above, frangipani and poinciana trees drop their blossoms on the stone paths, which are cut from solid rock and take you up the steep karsts and higher over the horizon. Before you know it, you’ve reached the top.

The five Marble Mountains

The mountains are named after the five elements: Kim (metal), Thuỷ (water), Mộc (wood), Hoả (fire) and Thổ (earth). Each offers a wonderful natural view.

Thuy Son (Water Mountain): the most worthwhile to visit is Thuy Son, which has become a sanctuary attracting many Buddhist followers. You should visit the mountain’s pagodas and shrines outside and inside caves.

Kim Son (Metal Mountain): not as dramatic as Water Mountain, Kim Son has two pagodas – Quan Am and Thai Son.

If you have more time, visit the rest – Earth Mountain, Fire Mountain and Wood Mountain.

Cave discoveries

Half a dozen large caves are hidden away in the Marble Mountains, along with many smaller ones that are rarely visited. Most of the caves are cool inside, with jungle plants and mossy walls creating an exotic atmosphere found nowhere else. All the caves have unique features, and some have fascinating stories of being discovered and used as hideaways over the centuries.

Huyen Khong cave

Huyen Khong is the largest cave, located on Thuy Son Mount (Water Mountain). Its collapsed ceiling allows shafts of light to pierce the dark cavern and hit the Buddha statues inside, creating dramatic spotlights. Huyen Khong was once used as a secret base and later a field hospital for Vietnamese revolutionaries. Its jaw-dropping size seems unlikely from the entrance, but it is large enough to house a massive stone Buddha and two shrines. One shrine is dedicated to the god and goddess of match-making, a popular spot for couples and singles to worship.

Also on Thuy Son Mount is Hoa Nghiem Cave, watched over by a beautiful 400-year-old stone statue of Lady Buddha.

Steps inside Hell cave

Hell Cave (Am Phu Cave) lies just opposite Huyen Khong Cave, opening up another world to tourists. It is literally Buddhism’s hell made visible by human hands to illustrate the future awaiting those who committed wrongdoings. Dark, humid and filled with strange, scary creatures in the corners, Hell Cave is a place to test your mind.

On Kim Son (Metal Mountain), Tang Chon Cave is worth a wander for the marble statues of chess players and mandarins placed inside the cave’s warrens, and Quan Am Cave is a must-see, featuring a very well-carved, human-size Bodhisattva statue made of natural marble. The statue looks like — and is believed to be — a work of centuries of water abrasion on the cave.

Set aside time to explore a few of the other caves if possible.

Pagodas and shrines

Linh Ung Pagoda

One of the best parts of touring Marble Mountain is seeing the striking pagodas on this elevated perch. Linh Ung Pagoda announces itself with an amazingly detailed archway facing the sweep of Non Nuoc Beach. Stop here for photos before wandering around the courtyard to admire the small lotus ponds, bonsai plants and tile work of the main structure. Nguyen Emperor Gia Long first ordered the pagoda built in 1825, and it bears many of the same motifs found in the UNESCO-listed tombs in Hue. A short walk away you’ll reach Xa Loi Tower. This 28-metre structure houses 200 statues of Buddha and offers breathtaking views of the landscape below.

Across on Water Mountain, you’ll find Tam Thai Pagoda. This tidy pagoda, dedicated to the bodhisattva Phat Di Lac, has its own charming courtyard. It was rebuilt by the Nguyen Dynasty King Ming Mang more than 400 years ago after falling into disrepair; most of its structure has been renovated many times throughout history. Tam Thai is at its most serene in the early morning hours. Hike up a steep slope of 156 steps to reach the three-gate entrance.

When to visit Marble Mountains

Marble Mountains can be visited year-round, but for photography, the best time is summer, June to August. Wear comfortable clothes and good walking or hiking shoes, as you will have to walk uphill and climb many (at times slippery) steps. Avoid the stormy season (September to November), when the steps become very slippery and dangerous. Also avoid the hottest hours of the day — which we didn’t, and as a result we sweated through three t-shirts each. Bring a sun hat and water. A few shacks selling drinks and snacks can be found along the paths.

Marble Mountains is best enjoyed at 7am, when the air is cool for climbing and you can have the paths and pagodas almost to yourselves. Visitors are requested to wear modest clothing, as this is an important spiritual and pilgrimage site. Remember to remove your shoes and hat before entering any pagoda.

Useful information

Marble Mountains are located seven kilometres from downtown Danang, on the coastal road toward Hoi An. The complex is open daily from 7am to 5:30pm. You will need at least two hours to see it. A very convenient elevator will bring you up and costs 15,000 VND per person per trip, unless you decide to climb the stairs at different entrances. Admission is 40,000 VND per person; kids go free. An extra 40,000 VND per person is charged to enter Hell Cave. A guide can be hired for 50,000 VND per group.

Asian Itinerary traveled to Marble Mountains on an amazing Vinfast scooter, a Vietnamese version of a Vespa, kindly provided by The Motorbike Station. This one was electric, brand new, and it was yellow. Leonardo and I enjoyed immensely.
