This excerpt was taken from BBC travel Nobody uses the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in India to get from A to B, but for the sheer joy of riding in a train that passes through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and 208 serpentine curves. The Bollywood movie Dil Se may have opened to a lukewarm response at the Indian box office, but one of the song sequences from the movie remains a favourite melody 25 years on. Chaiyya Chaiyya isn’t just memorable just for its catchy tune, but also because it was shot entirely on top of a moving train. Indian heartthrob Shah Rukh Khan pranced around with a group of backup dancers as the train chugged slowly across lush hilly terrain, past tea plantations and over tall viaducts, steam billowing from the old-fashioned engine. I, too, have travelled on this very train, although my journey was far more comfortable and less precarious than Khan’s. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (Nilgiri translates to “blue mountain” after the bluish hue the sun casts on the hills), which locals refer to as NMR or more fondly as the “toy train”, is a delightful example of the cliché about the journey being the destination. Running though Tamil Nadu State, the train is the slowest in India due to an extremely steep gradient on the route. It takes nearly five hours to cover a distance of 46km, climbing from the town of Mettupalayam at the foothills of the Nilgiris up to the hill town of Udhagamandalam – amended by British tongues to Ootacamund and then shortened by Indians to Ooty. The downhill ride back cuts an hour, but the journey by road takes just a fraction of that time. Armed with a first-class ticket that cost Rs 600 (about £6), I boarded the blue train at Ooty on a chilly morning, eager to experience this quintessential Nilgiris experience. (A second-class ticket is less than half the price, but without the light cushioning on the seats). D Om Prakash Narayan, senior public relations officer with Southern Railway, which operates the train, told me, “When you get into the train, it is like you enter another dimension.” I could see what he meant when I boarded the tiny coach. Families with children were crowded around the boxy windows, waiting for the promised views of the Nilgiris. There was a palpable sense of excitement among passengers, with everyone in a holiday mood, cheering and clapping when the train went through dark tunnels. Located at an altitude of 2,240m, Ooty was founded as a summer resort for the British Raj (Credit: Sreekanth G/Getty Images) Ooty is one of India‘s oldest hill stations – these towns at higher elevations were the summer retreats of the British Raj when they needed to escape the stifling heat of the plains – and remains popular among Indian tourists looking for a cool holiday or honeymoon. Today it’s a crowded little town, with vestiges of colonialism hidden within the chaos of urban India. But as we left Ooty behind, reminders of the British Raj began to make an appearance, with station names like Lovedale, Wellington, Adderly and Runnymede. “It all feels unchanged from the British times, like time has stopped here,” said Sharanya Sitaraman, who recently travelled on this train with her family. “We almost could imagine European ladies with fancy hats getting off the train at these small stations.” Remnants of the Raj are particularly seen in the colonial design of several old buildings across the Nilgiris: offices, bungalows (some of which are now boutique hotels) and churches. The colonial feel is so evocative that Coonoor station, just an hour down from Ooty, became part of the fictional town of Chandrapore in David Lean’s 1984 film adaptation of EM Forster’s novel, A Passage to India. “People on this train still see the same things that people saw more than 100 years ago,” said retired journalist D Radhakrishnan, who reported for decades from the Nilgiris region. “Shall we proceed?” our trail guide suggested following a brief pause for water at an altitude of roughly 3,000 meters above sea level. We trailed behind him, anchoring our hiking poles into the earthy trail ahead while he picked up the pace. We were in the midst of a four-day trek organised by a Dharamsala-based outfitter, en route to a mountain pass within the Dhauladhar range of the Indian Himalayas. It had been quite some time since my last backpacking adventure. I felt uninspired, merely going through the motions, and often found myself short on patience with my husband and children. Maybe the Himalayas held the key to my healing. We had arrived in Dharamsala three days prior, arriving at dawn via an overnight bus from Chandigarh. Tucked away in the lush hills of the Kangra Valley, the city serves as the winter capital of Himachal Pradesh and hosts the Tibetan government-in-exile since 1960. Our accommodation was in McLeod Ganj, a hillside enclave with narrow streets, fondly dubbed Little Lhasa due to its large Tibetan community. Among its notable residents is the 14th Dalai Lama, residing in the humble Buddhist temple complex of Thekchen Choeling. During our explorations, I discovered that the number of Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala has dwindled over the years, with many seeking opportunities abroad. While most Tibetans we encountered were reserved, a shopkeeper who fled to McLeod Ganj in the 1980s confided his concerns about the future, intending to relocate to the United States to be with his son once the Dalai Lama, now 88, passed away. Contrary to guidebook descriptions, I found McLeod Ganj to be less touristy than expected, despite shops selling BTS merchandise and Korean snacks alongside Tibetan souvenirs. The Tibet Museum proved a worthwhile visit. However, after two days, we were eager to venture into the mountains. By the time we reached camp on the second night, the impact of our unintentional digital detox was more pronounced than the absence of hot showers. Cellular service was scarce, and conserving mobile battery became imperative. The first day’s hike was manageable—a three-hour journey on a crisp June morning, passing by crowds at Bhagsu Nag Temple and its nearby waterfall. Traveling light, we left our backpacks at the hotel in McLeod Ganj, reaching the picturesque campsite at Lower Triund by midday. It was serene until groups of energetic young Indians arrived to pitch their tents. On the second day, we left the camping crowds behind, encountering herds of sheep and goats instead. As we ascended past the scenic Triund summit towards the snow line, the climb seemed endless. Yet, it was too early to feel apprehensive; I focused on each step and breath, undeterred by my slower pace. By the time we reached our campsite at 3,200 meters, the imposing snow-capped peaks of the Dhauladhar range loomed before us, occasionally veiled by mist. Apart from a few fellow foreigners, we had the mountain to ourselves. Over a simple dinner of dal chawal and achar pickles, our guide and our porter shared insights. The Gaddis, a semi-nomadic group, have herded livestock in the Himalayas for centuries. However, mountain tourism is reshaping their way of life, with many young men like him now working as trekking guides or running mountain cafes. Early on, he warned us that the third day would be the most challenging, with steep inclines nearing 80 degrees in the final stretch. Stripped of distractions, I battled a rising anxiety about the impending difficulties. We set out at dawn the next morning, donning microspikes and fluorescent gaiters upon reaching the Laka Glacier. Linked together by a safety rope, we trudged through the snow, struggling for breath and pressured to maintain pace in the rope team. Progress slowed on the steep, icy slopes, with occasional slips despite our efforts. By 10 a.m., after over five hours of climbing, we found ourselves just 300 meters from the Indrahar Pass when we reluctantly decided to abandon our summit attempt. Our guide cautioned that reaching the 4,342-meter pass after noon risked peril from melting alpine snow. Though disappointed, it was a prudent choice. The descent pushed us to our limits, navigating rappels, slides, and downhill runs while avoiding hidden crevasses. I had never been more grateful to stand on level ground. Despite the setback, there was satisfaction in surpassing our expectations as novice snow climbers, learning on the go—an accomplishment I hadn’t anticipated at the start of the year. It seemed that mountain climbing, despite my usual aversion to uphill treks, provided the meditative clarity I needed. By focusing on the present, I found solace in navigating challenges on my terms, one step at a time.

Amritsar was established in the 16th Century by a Sikh guru and is located in the region of Punjab where Sikhism originated. The religion is known for its tradition of seva – a voluntary service performed for others without any expectations or reciprocity. Sikhs all over the world do seva in gurudwaras (Sikh temples), most often in simple acts like cleaning the floors, serving meals and maintaining order in the temple. Others perform seva in their private life through acts of generosity and charity. In April 2021 when Covid devastated families across India, the Sikh community rose to the challenge of delivering oxygen cylinders and other medical supplies to those in desperate need. “Seva means selfless service, and in Sikhism it is not just an exhortation and a guide but a daily practice,” writes Jasreen Mayal Khanna in her book Seva: Sikh Wisdom for Living Well by Doing Good. “Kind has been cool among Sikhs way before it became a Brooklyn hipster motto.” “The other name for seva is love,” said 23-year-old Abhinandan Chaudhary, who has been doing seva with his family since he was eight. “A common teaching is that one should be so discreet and selfless, that if you are doing seva from the left hand, even your right hand should not find out about it.” In an increasingly individualised and capitalistic world, it is a refreshing way of living. The spirit of generosity in Sikhism can be seen across the world. During Covid lockdown, Sikh volunteers in a gurudwara in England delivered thousands of meals a day to NHS staff, while Sikhs in various US cities cooked hundreds of thousands of free meals. In crisis or emergency situations, Sikhs have rallied their full force to help those in need, whether it may be storm-hit Canada or cyclone-struck New Zealand. But in Amritsar, the beating heart of the Sikh religion, the fulfilment of seva is taken to another level. It is known throughout India that no person ever has to go to bed hungry in Amritsar. That’s because there is always a hot meal ready for anyone who should want it at the Golden Temple, the most significant shrine of the Sikh religion. The Golden Temple’s langar, a free, communal kitchen, is the largest in the world, serving 100,000 people per day, seven days a week. When you are about to land on India‘s archipelago of Lakshadweep in the Arabian Sea, 490km west of the closest Indian city of Kochi, you’ll see shades of blue all around. The narrow strip closest to the white beach, lined with hundreds of coconut trees, is light blue. A little further into the sea, the water is turquoise, while the deep sea is emerald blue. “It’s mesmerising, really,” said Shradha Menon, a geologist from the Indian Institute of Technology, who visited the islands three times in the last two years to study their carbon sedimentation. Each time, she was one of just a handful of outsiders on the 36-seat plane from Kochi to Lakshadweep, carrying island residents and government officials posted there. But recently there has been a lot more interest in the islands from Indian travellers after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep in January 2024. Pictures of him walking on the white beaches and snorkelling in its crystal-clear waters were uploaded on his official account on X (formerly Twitter) and his YouTube channel, garnering hundreds of thousands of views. In his message to the public, he said, “The beauty of Lakshadweep can’t be described in words. To those who like to visit beaches and islands around the world, I urge them to visit the Lakshadweep.” Since then, the archipelago has been thrust into the spotlight. Google searches for “Lakshadweep” soared to the highest they’d been In 20 years, according to The Economic Times. Travel articles suddenly appeared in mainstream media outlets, and YouTube videos and Instagram reels flooded the internet. MakeMyTrip, one of India’s biggest travel booking portals, claimed a 3,400% increase to in-platform searches for Lakshadweep after Modi’s visit. The phone lines of Lakshadweep‘s Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports (SPORTS) that handles tourism in the territory have never been busier. From one or two tourist inquiries a day, they have been getting at least 10 a day since last month, said Abdul Samad, one of SPORTS’ two water sports instructors who helped Modi snorkel in the island in January. Meanwhile, Cordelia Cruises, which has been sailing from Mumbai, Kochi and Goa to Lakshadweep since September 2021, has witnessed a 2,500% increase in booking queries since Modi’s visit. New beach and water villas are already being planned on the islands of Suheli and Kadmat, Samad confirmed, and India’s finance minister Neermala Sitharaman even mentioned Lakshadweep in her budget speech on 1 February while talking about better connectivity to India’s islands to grow tourism. “India is the cradle of mankind, the birthplace of human language, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend and the great-grandmother of tradition. Our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are kept only in India”. These are words by the American writer Mark Twain, who with two brushstrokes paints a very precise picture of what India represents in the context of world civilisations. Honestly, it is very hard to disagree with him, albeit with some reservations given that India contends the title of ‘cradle of mankind’ with Mesopotamia. To tell you the truth, I thought I was being original when I borrowed these words, but then I realized that others before me had already quoted them which, if on the one hand it makes me feel rather trivial, on the other, evidently, there must be a foundation of truth. In fact, some texts speak of an evolved and highly refined civilisation, existing along the Indus valley already eight thousand years ago, which has permeated all subsequent cultures of the East and West. If it’s true that writing a text, whether a blog or something else, in the end and simplifying a lot is nothing more than putting a series of qualifying adjectives in sequence, writing about India, this country of large numbers , means that you have to use practically all of the adjectives, and often you even need to use superlatives. The Indian subcontinent, in fact, is so much of everything. From an estimate by the United Nations dating back to 2005, for example, in 2022 India should get ready to become the most populous country in the world. Yes, perhaps this is thanks to the Chinese one-child policy, and perhaps it is too early to have definitive data, but I am pretty sure it is about to happen. To stay on the subject of large numbers, India is not only the cradle of civilisations but also of religion: 33 million Hindu deities are adored, venerated in 20 main languages and in over 2000 dialects. And speaking of languages and dialects, the former Shah of Persia Mohammad Reza Pahlavi said that “India […] is an incredible amalgam of races, cultures, religions and languages. There is not even a common national language. In Parliament, to understand each other, the deputies are forced to speak in English”. On the occasion of the last Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, one of the oldest and most important festivals which is celebrated to symbolise the inner light which protects against spiritual darkness, 600,000 oil lamps were lit in the city of Ayodhya alone, and they shone for 45 minutes, while in July 2016, 50 million trees were planted on the same day in the single state of Uttar Pradesh to try to put a stop to the smog emergency. Seen in this way, India almost seems to be just a succession of cold and impersonal numbers, a sort of ‘geographical Fibonacci frequency’. Though these numbers merely give us a quantitative image of this country, which should definitely not be overlooked, it is extremely restrictive to identify India only through numbers. India is much more. It is the variety of landscapes ranging from the mountain peaks that caress the Himalayas in the north, to the beaches of Goa, passing through the deserts of Rajasthan; it is the chaos of its metropolis, it is peace in meditation, it is the Taj Mahal that shines with the colours of the first light of dawn and the last light of sunset; it is the isolation, protected by the Indian government, of the tribe who live on North Sentinal Island, in the Andaman archipelago, and who refuse any form of contact with strangers; it is the smoke of the funeral pyre that rises in Benares, the faithful who bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges and the kitsch joy of Bollywood; it is the Punjab of the Sikhs, people who often paid for their pride with bloodbaths both under the British oppressors and, at the end of colonisation, under the government of Indira Gandhi, who in turn paid for their repressions with her life. Siddhārtha Gautama ‘the Buddha’, the poet Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi were born in India, soul and heart, the latter, of that mass civil disobedience that led the country to independence. Unfortunately, India is also the division into castes, the poor who have no roof or who live in slums, the horsemen of Calcutta, the thousands of sacred cows that roam undisturbed in the streets, alleys and shops. India is that “feeling of annoyance and rejection that fades as the days go by” (Ruggero Da Ros). Once India proclaimed its independence in 1947, it began to recover its own identity by discarding that superfluous baggage left by the ancient colonisers. Goodbye then to the jacket, tie and bowler hat, so extraneous to tradition and so unsuitable for the tropical climate, to return to more practical and traditional clothing; away with the street names with their anglicising references, away with everything the British had brought along to make their stay more comfortable. Well, away with ‘almost’ everything British: the Indians have kept cricket and, for those who understand it, they seem to play it pretty well too. Above all, away the old names that had, at least for us Westerners, that exotic sound, that acrid smell of the Orient, which has always transported the imagination into an atmosphere made of dreams and distant destinations. Goodbye to Bombay, Madras, Calcutta and Benares, which just by naming them you thought you could smell the burning kettles. Welcome, somewhat reluctantly, to Mumbai, Chennay, Kolkata and Varanasi. Dawn on a Saturday morning; the sun rises lazily from the east and timidly scatter flashes of light over the world, while the moon, which has not yet set entirely, stands out pale, almost invisible, against the background of a light blue sky. We walk along an avenue, surrounded by monkeys that jump here and there; indolent yet sacred cows lazily graze undisturbed and unaware of their surroundings, feeding on grass or rubbish without distinction. Above all, we are surrounded by people, whose number will grow as the hours go by. People who, like us, make their way as if on a pilgrimage to the best-known temple of love which has ever been created by man on earth. One of the seven wonders of the modern world, the jewel of Muslim art in India, recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site: the Taj Mahal. We venture through queues and formalities, and pay an all too modest fee if compared to the show that awaits us. At first, the plastic shoe covers we must wear to access the inside of the mausoleum which, let’s not forget, is a Muslim building; then, a queue of people waiting, which we avoid thanks to the special ticket we purchased; and, finally, the usual crowd of those who define themselves as low-cost guides. They all promise unique explanations about the history and curiosities of this monument, and try to convince us by explaining the advantages we would get by making use of their services; and they would not let go as long as they think they have a thread of hope of capturing us. Boring, you may say; sure, but they’re doing a job, their job, and ultimately they are trying to make a living. India is also this. We decline their offers as we are too keen on staying on our own like a rebellious drop in that sea of people. We follow the flow, channeling ourselves between a wall and a building made of red bricks, until we finally reach the west door from where, framed by the door itself, a white building can be glimpsed in the background, white and faded like the moon which has by now almost disappeared from the sky. At a first glance, the Taj Mahal appears to me like an overexposed photo in which the lines, contours and details do not appear well defined. In fact, they say there is a deliberate optical illusion behind it, but I will not accept this explanation as it excludes the poetry factor. And the Taj Mahal is pure poetry.  It appears pale. Pale like the face of that woman who slowly faded away in the pains of childbirth, and who wanted help from he who cannot give it to her, despite being an emperor. Because by then her fate was sealed. Pale like the pain on the face of a husband in love and powerless, despite being an emperor, about the fate of this woman whose future would fade away with the first cry of her last child. Pale like the marble color of death that would take possession of that creature’s lifeless body, to which only the devotion of a man, her man, would remain intact. He will immortalise its pallor in the white marbles of the Taj Mahal which at every dawn, like an overexposed photo, reminds the world of the pallor of a love that was extinguished forever. He who visits Taj Mahal knows it. He knows of pain and devotion, and he lets himself go for a few seconds of recollection, abandoning himself, between a photo and a selfie, to a thought, to a memory and, why not, to a pinch of jealousy towards she who was able to enjoy even in her deathbed, in pain and suffering, the story of a love with no equals. And he knows of he, who lived this love crashed between the discouragement of an incipient loss and the problems of government and conspiracy by which he was pressed. I get closer, and the outlines of this masterpiece become clearer. The pallor fades, the Taj Mahal appears in all its splendour, and I realise that no photo does it justice enough, because the Taj Mahal goes beyond any image and any imagination. The engravings and the writings in Arabic, quotations from the holy Koran, admirably decorate the façade, adding further personality to it; the shape, which from a distance seems squared, is rediscovered, up close, to be octagonal; and the basin with the fountains (which at the time of our visit were turned off) is bordered by sidewalks, paths and trees which, like the guidelines of a photographic composition, draw attention to the monument. Mumtaz Mahal, third and favorite wife of the Moghul, died in June 1631 and the construction work on the Taj Mahal began the following year and ended only in 1654. During these over twenty years, 20,000 workers and many craftsmen were employed, some of which coming from Europe and even one from Italy, a certain Geronimo Veroneo. Various materials from all over India and Asia were used, including 12,000 tons of white marble from Makrana, near Jodhpur, and 28 different types of precious and semi-precious stones set in the marble as a decorative motif of the entire structure, that was not even defined as a tomb since its name means ‘Crown of the Palace’. When the Taj Mahal was completed, the life and reign of the then elderly Shah Jahan drew to a close, and in September 1657, when he fell ill, a succession struggle broke out between his four sons. The winner amongst them, Aurangzeb, declared himself emperor in 1658 and locked up his father in the Agra fort, from which he would continue to admire his masterpiece of love until his death in 1666. Rajasthan, the land of the Rajas, or great kings –  better known as maharajas, is one of the most visited Indian states and its territory extent is more or less equal to that of Italy. Rajasthan is generally regarded as the image of India most foreigners have in mind: that of ancient palaces, forts, splendid residences. These are the testimonies left by the Rajput warriors at the time of feudalism. These warriors dominated the political scene of northern India starting from the 7th-8th century and were owners of fiefdoms and palaces which they defended strenuously from the Arabs, to whom they eventually had to succumb in the 11th century. Although the Rajput artistic history began several centuries earlier, it was in this period that a new unique architectural style was born, the result of the mingling of Rajput and Moghul art. This art characterised the magnificent buildings erected between the 13th and the 19th centuries that we still admire today. The great Moghul dynasty, of Turkish-Mongol origin and descendants of Genghis Khan, began in the 16th century. This ethnic group was destined to merge with the Hindu ethnics of the maharajas, the same ones who, with some exceptions, would later enter into alliances with the British who colonised India from the 17th century. Even at that time, Rajasthan remained divided into fiefdoms, and only after the departure of the British in 1947 did it become part of the new Indian Union. Rajasthan is a land that includes the arid area of the Thar desert, which extends north-west towards Pakistan, and the hilly area of the Aravalli mountains (800 mt above sea level), which reach as far as Delhi and Udaipur and which, older than the Himalayas, supplied the maharajas with the granite used for building their splendid mansions. The caravan routes that reached India through Rajasthan have contributed to enriching the history of this magical state and its settlements, as evidenced by the beautiful golden city of Jaisalmer, full of havelis (traditional townhouses) beautifully built by wealthy merchants who profited from trade. Many of the most beautiful cities of India are to be found here, as intact as in the past: Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, each with its own beauties and connected by roads on the sides of which the slow life of every day flows. These ancient roads cross villages, cultivated fields, cool hills or areas burned by the sun. In India, moving from one place to another also enriches the journey. Rajasthan offers accommodation of all categories, even in historic buildings that have become heritage hotels. The state can be visited all year round, though the best period is from October to April when the climate is pleasant. Rajasthan also has lot to offer to nature lovers . The Ranthambore Park is home to tigers and to many other animal species and it is open from October to June. The Keoladeo National Park, known for its many varieties of migratory birds, is also certainly worth a visit.
