The world’s largest swimming competition on the open water, Oceanman, will make a splash next month at Alma Resort overlooking Long Beach on Vietnam’s Cam Ranh peninsula. The gruelling 10km ‘Oceanman’ swim, 5km ‘Half Oceanman’ swim, 2km ‘Sprint’ swim, 3.5 km ‘Ocean Teams’ relay and 500m ‘Ocean Kids’ swim will start and finish on Alma’s beachfront during the event from September 6-8. Stretching 13 kilometres, Long Beach, or Bai Dai in Vietnamese, is renowned as one of Asia’s most stunning beaches due to its aquamarine waters with islands strewn just offshore. Oceanman’s official hotel partner Alma will host an anticipated 900 participants from almost 30 countries, as well as spectators and event organisers. Open to male and female participants from seven to more than 70 years of age, Oceanman began in 2015. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon, Southeast Asia’s longest-running final competition, concluded on November 19, 2023, at the integrated resort destination of Laguna Phuket on Phuket Island, Thailand. With over 1,000 triathletes representing 30 countries, the event fostered a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere, showcasing Phuket as a world-class sports event destination. Once again, it highlighted the allure of organizing top-tier sports events in picturesque Phuket, demonstrating to the world the island’s charm and suitability for such prestigious competitions. The competition commenced at 6.30am with the start of the Triathlon, featuring men’s and women’s Pros. Subsequently, participants in the sprint triathlon and duathlon began their races. Triathlon competitors faced challenging stages, conquering a 1.8-kilometre swim in the Andaman Sea and lagoon, a rigorous 55-kilometre cycling route navigating mountain trails, and a demanding 12-kilometre run within Laguna Phuket. All races concluded at Laguna Grove, with the cut-off for each distance set at approximately 12.30pm. In the men’s category this year, Max Stapley, the British triathlete, marked his debut in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and emerged victorious. He claimed the top spot by completing the race with an impressive time of 2 hours, 32 minutes, and 53 seconds. Coming in second was Max Studer from Switzerland, finishing in 2 hours, 34 minutes, and 09 seconds, while the third-place finish went to Anthony Costes from France, recording a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 32 seconds. In the women’s division, the title of champion was claimed by Kate Waugn from the United Kingdom, securing victory in the Laguna Phuket Triathlon. She completed the challenging course in 2 hours, 46 minutes, and 04 seconds. Julie Derron from Switzerland claimed second position, finishing the race in 2 hours, 47 minutes, and 45 seconds, while third was secured by Sophie Malowiecki from Australia, posting a time of 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 12 seconds. Central Vietnam is proving its mettle as a perfect stage for the big golf occasions as it continues to roll out the red carpet for a series of banner events and tournaments. Next up in a packed 2023 calendar is the second Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF) Danang Conference in late August when the region welcomes key stakeholders from the golf industry. Embracing the theme of Development, Growth and Opportunity the conference will present Golf Tourism, development and golf course design strategies with an overriding sustainability focus for the rapid growth of the game in Asia, the conference will form part of a week-long golfing festival in Danang that will also see one of the area’s top clubs play host to a 54-hole event on the Asian Development Tour (ADT), the Asian Tour’s feeder circuit. “Golf tourism is surging once again in Vietnam. Friends and families came together in Phuket for the 17th edition of the Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon this weekend which saw competitive racing, personal bests and lots of smiles. From young to old, over 6,000 runners from more than 43 countries took part in a weekend of tropical fun. The change to have morning starts on both days this year saw many opting to compete on both days and a festival-like atmosphere at the finish line with food stalls and entertainment enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. Day 1 (10th June 2023, Saturday) hosted the 2km kids run, 5km and 10.5km. Almost 250 kids enjoyed the 2km kids run in the green surrounds of Laguna Phuket and the first to cross the line in the male division was Julian Kloihofer from Thailand. Kawinthip Wongthawat, also from Thailand, crossed first in the women’s division. Just two seconds separated the top two men in the 5km with Seung Ho Park (KOR) taking the win ahead of Sergei Zyrianov (RUS) in second while in the Women’s division it was Hayley Newman (AUS) who secured the win by almost a minute over Siena Milgate (AUS) in second. Day 2 (11th June 2023, Sunday) saw thousands of runners new and old converge at the start line at Laguna Grove where friendships were made and renewed, and camaraderie was high. With runners from all over the world lining up together, it was a clear sign that Phuket is back and open for all! Out with the lead pack, Artem Sekachev (RUS) pushed the marathon pace early to create some separation between the leaders and the chasers. He then continued to turn up the pressure and by the 30km mark had a three minute lead which he further extended over the remaining distance to finish in a time of 02:51:10, more than five minutes ahead of second place finisher Waiwit Thongtae from Thailand. In the Women’s division, the racing proved much closer and it became a podium battle amongst Thai and Aussie runners. With just two minutes separating the top three at the finish line, it was Nuntaporn Tengamnuay who claimed the crown in a time of 03:38:33 ahead of Wannarat Jittiwuttinon in second. In the Marathon Relay it was the Thai team “Team Three men and a little lady” who were the clear winners in a time of 02:50:39. Little separated the runners in the Male Half Marathon. Sergei Zyrianov from Russia got off to a fast start and led from early on and although more conservative at the start Sota Maehara (JPN) built up his pace and was closing fast towards the finish. Unfortunately for him, there wasn’t enough track and Sergei Zyrianov held on to take the win in a time of 01:17:25 and Sota Maehara had to settle for second. In the Women’s division, Australia’s Hayley Newman out ran a tough field to finish with a winning margin of four minutes over second place finisher from USA, Lindsay Nickel. Organised by GAA Events and internationally-certified measured run course by World Athletics (WA), the Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon is one of Southeast Asia’s favourite destination marathons and a qualifying event for the Boston Marathon. Two giants of European golf — Sir Nick Faldo, and Luke Donald — have added their voices to the chorus of approval surrounding Central Vietnam’s credentials as a golf destination. “To my mind, Central Vietnam is near the pinnacle of places to play golf in Asia,” said Faldo, whose signature layout at Laguna Golf Lang Co is regarded as one of the best layouts in Asia. “The stunning landscapes of beaches and mountains are endlessly beautiful; the warmness of the people is a joy to encounter and there are wonderful golf courses to suit players of every ability.” When Faldo and Donald express an opinion on golf it pays to take notice. The Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon is set to welcome over 8,000 runners from more than 40 countries to the tropical island of Phuket to compete in Southeast Asia’s favourite destination marathons. Held 10-11 June 2023 at Laguna Phuket, the award-winning Supersports Phuket Phuket Marathon is one of the longest-running international sports events on Phuket and is driving the island’s resurgence as a world-class sports tourism destination. This year, the event will feature a new race format with different start times for the various distances.
