Cam Ranh in the south of Vietnam is a great beach destination featuring a beautiful blue sea and white sand. But Cam Ranh is not all sea and sand. One of the best ways to discover the cultural and natural features of the area is to rent a scooter and to drive around.

There are a few motorbike rental shops in Cam Ranh, as most are concentrated in Nha Trang, so the best is to find them online, but the question is: how do I chose one? I was so lucky to find a bike rental shop that provided me both with a bike, and with loads of free information and tips about where to drive and what to visit and see. It was a wealth of information that Leonardo and I appreciated as it helped making the best out of our 10 days in the area.

The name of their business is Cham Khan Hoa and the bike rental is called Lam Duan. They have a wide range of motorbikes available for rent, including automatic scooters and manual bikes. They offer delivery to your place, making it convenient for travellers.

As I mentioned earlier, this place not only provided me with a nearly new bike, one that Leonardo chose from photos they sent me via Whatsapp. The bike in question was a Yamaha Nouvo GP 125cc, a flashy blue colour. It was via Whatsapp that they provided me an address for a laundry shop, a place where to go and sample local mangoes, the way to get to a local market, some nice nature adventure with waterfalls and trekking experience, and more. In the end, we were contacting them almost on a daily basis to ask for anything that pop to our mind.

The person interacting with me had perfect English and a passion for anything local. I can easily state that they made a big difference in the way Leonardo and I lived our time in Cam Ranh and Nha Trang.

When Miss Ngoc from The Memory Danang hotel in Danang offered Leonardo and I to join their tour to Hoi An and to the Thanh Ha Pottery Village, we did not hesitate and booked a place for me and my boy Leonardo. I was surprised to learn that the tour would not be aboard of a minivan, but by scooter.

Well, we had our great electric scooter, courtesy of The Motorbike Station, and we love adventure. So on a sunny and steaming-hot early afternoon, we left Danang in a group of ‘bikers’, comprising a few guests and four staff from The Memory Danang, for the drive to Hoi An.

Thanh Ha Pottery Village

The way was the coastal road, running along an amazing stretch of beach that goes for an amazing 30km, and before long we reached the Thanh Ha Pottery Village, an artisans’ village far from the hustle and bustle of city life. Dating back to the 15th Century, Thanh Ha Pottery Village is rich in history and still carries on the pottery tradition: it has contributed to the creation of many amazing sites in Vietnam throughout the years.

We paid the entrance ticket and walked through the narrow brick layering roads and alleys until we reached a small pottery producing family compound with lots of colourful and original pottery on display. There, an old lady provided us with bags of soft clay and laid hay mats on the floor for us. She then placed a few wooden boards on the mats and put the clay onto them. We were ready to mould!

While the local lady trained our group on how to make pottery, Ms Ngoc told us about a traditional and unique method of manually shaping pottery by hand and foot pedal without using moulds, with final products not enamelled or heated by a traditional wood kiln. We then started making pottery, or at least we attempted making it, coached by the expert lady in the most amazing peace and tranquility that only a local village can guarantee.

While this all sounds like a tourist trap, believe when I say that for us it was an excellent opportunity to witness the beauty of traditional craft and the process of creating unique ceramic products from talented and skilful artisans. Needless to say my boy Leonardo enjoyed so much getting his hands dirty with clay and producing small dinosaurs and monstrous figures that would be later dried and delivered to the hotel for him. And at the end of the practice, we received a pottery gift: an hand made ocarina with the shape of an animal.

At 5pm it started raining so we decided to skip the Terracotta Museum and headed straight to Hoi An. Hoi An is often described by travellers as one of the tastiest cities in Vietnam, and it is famous for its authentic cuisine and local specialties. There’s a wide selection of eateries to choose from and affordable prices are part of the charm. We entered one of these eateries, and enjoyed an array of local dishes comprising rice paper and mussels, all yummy of course! After the meal, it was time to walk along the alleys of historical Hoi An.

Hoi An is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century. Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site. It remains complete as a homogenous complex of traditional wooden buildings, with the original organically developed street plan within the town’s river/seacoast setting.

Hoi An Ancient Town was classified as a National Cultural Heritage Site in 1985, with a management plan implemented at the time of nomination of the property that is being kept up to date and reviewed as required by UNESCO to ensure that it remains effective

Hoi An is like a living museum: the town’s original street plan and gorgeous architecture have been maintained despite urbanisation, with more than 800 preserved ancient buildings to marvel at. The rain stopped and the group walked the small streets, trying local products like a herbal lemon tea at popular Mot Hoi An tea house, and taking loads of photos. It was hard to walk along streets full of tourists, so we headed to the Hoai River, where an amazing show awaited us.

In the water, dozens of wooden boats were transporting customers for the customary 15 minutes boat ride, and old ladies sold lanterns to be released in the river below, which was already replete with them. Releasing lanterns not only brings beauty to traditional culture, but also carries an extremely deep spiritual value to the local people here. All was lit by an amazingly bright full moon.

Needless to say, Leonardo was speechless. He was so tired that he fell asleep during the bike trip back to Danang. He had so many exciting activities and sights during this half-day tour, but the highlight for him was the care and attention of the amazing staff of The Memory Danang. They all speak excellent English and were also an amazing asset to the tour, as they contributed to many explanations about this amazing cultural heritage. We made it back by 8,30 pm, and we were ready to spend another night in our great room at The Memory Danang.

Visitors can also check out numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue Imperial City, and Phing Nga Caves, all of which are easily accessible via bus.

Marble Mountains

Marble Mountains are a cluster of 5 limestone and marble hills within Hoa Hai District, about 9 km south of Danang. Named after natural elements, the peaks are individually known as Thuy Son (water), Moc Son (wood), Hoa Son (fire), Kim Son (metal) and Tho Son (earth). There are also a host of 17th-century Buddhist sanctuaries and pagoda temples dotted across the mountains, where locals pray and have their fortunes told. A must-do for any first-time visitor to Danang is climbing the steps to the top of the Marble Mountains, where they can enjoy spectacular views across Non Nuoc Beach or My Khe Beach. Alternatively, there’s an elevator service available for those unable to walk to the top.

Phap Lam Pagoda

Phap Lam Pagoda is set within a 2-storey building along Ong Ich Khiem Street, featuring plenty of trees, manicured gardens, and beautiful Buddhist sculptures. Despite its location within bustling Danang city centre, the atmosphere here is very serene with locals praying in the morning and monks going about their daily lives. The courtyard of the pagoda houses a 1.1-metre-high seated Buddha statue and brass statues of the Goddess of Mercy (Avalokitecvara) and Dai The Chi Bodhisattva. Visitors can also enjoy vegetarian cuisine at local restaurants and food carts surrounding Phap Lam Pagoda.

Da Nang Cathedral

Danang Cathedral is one of the most unique catholic churches in Vietnam, featuring a pink-painted edifice, stained-glass windows, and an imposing bell tower topped with a rooster weathercock. Built by the French in 1923, it’s also known as Con Ga Church (Rooster Church) and serves the local Catholic community to this very day. The cathedral is located along Tran Phu Street, about a 15-minute walk from the iconic Dragon Bridge. Entrance to Danang Cathedral is free of charge and its high tower offers a stunning view of the city, Han River, and verdant mountains.

Hai Van Pass

Hai Van Pass stands at 500 m above sea level, making it the highest pass in Vietnam. It’s located on the border between Thua Thien-Hue Province and Danang City, where you can enjoy panoramic views of verdant mountains and clear blue skies as well as Danang City, Tien Sa Port, Son Tra Peninsula, and the South China Sea. The pass also hosts a dilapidated French-built fort that was later used as a bunker by South Vietnamese and US armies during the Vietnam War. Due to its sudden curves and blind corners, Hai Van is also notorious for its fair share of accidents – look out for small altars set along the roadside which are dedicated to perished victims.

Non Nuoc Beach

A 20-minute drive from Danang City, Non Nuoc Beach boasts international acclaim as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Featuring soft white sands, a gentle slope, unpolluted waters and mild waves, visitors can do plenty of leisure activities such as sunbathing, jet-skiing, and surfing whilst enjoying local seafood dishes. Non Nuoc Beach takes up 5 kilometres of Hoa Hai Ward’s coastline, ending at the foot of Marble Mountains, which hosts ancient pagodas, sacred caves, and handicraft villages.

Asia Park

Asia Park is situated at a beautiful resort. It casts as a  comprehensive amusement and culture park with many distinctive features which can be significantly associated with East Asian Flair. The Asia Park is divided into three: an Amusement Park, a Cultural park and a Central Zone. A 115 meter Sun Wheel (a clock tower basically) can be seen standing tall in the centre of the park that displays time zones of different countries and is surrounded by a breath-taking garden. The Amusement Park features shows, events, restaurants, rides and other interactive and adventurous activities. The Cultural Park throws light on the historical values  such as performing arts, folk dances, crafts, architecture and cuisines of 10 prominent Asian countries.

Key considerations and top destinations for domestic travellers

Key Highlights:

• 3 in 10 respondents from the Philippines still have high levels of concerns about COVID-19 safety, highest across the region
• Beach holidays are popular across Southeast Asia
• While costs of the whole vacation do have an impact on travel decisions, particularly for Indonesia (61%), Malaysia (61%) and Thailand (60%), the weather of the destination takes precedence in Thailand (62%), and Vietnam (55%)

Milieu Insight, Southeast Asia’s leading consumer research firm, conducted a survey among 2,500 working individuals aged 20-65 in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, and Malaysia in April 2023 to find out their summer travel plans for this year.

The survey reveals interesting insights on the willingness to travel domestically, concerns for safety, and the number and duration of trips planned for the year. The findings show a positive outlook for the travel industry in the region, with about 8 in 10 respondents (76%) keen to travel in their own country. 85% of respondents across the region plan to embark on at least 2 domestic trips this year.

4 in 10 respondents in Thailand intend to take 4 or more trips this year, the highest across the region for domestic travel intent. This suggests that travel companies should consider offering packages and promotions that cater to multiple trips to boost the frequency of travel. Additionally, the duration of travel per trip remains stable across markets, with the majority preferring an average of 3-4 days per trip. This information is valuable for travel companies when planning their packages and promotions.

Malaysia and Thailand Tourism Offices have done well in the promotion of domestic travel

Interestingly, the promotion of the destination is less impactful than a recommendation from family/friends in most countries, except Malaysia and Thailand, which means the tourism offices have done well in boosting local tourism.

The survey also revealed that concerns about COVID-19 safety have waned across most of the countries surveyed, with the Philippines showing the highest level of concern, likely due to rising cases in the country as reported by the Department of Health. (4,456) in the last week of April 2023.

Travel spots and sceneries rank highest in key considerations for domestic travel in Indonesia (69%), Thailand (66%) and Vietnam (58%), while the safety of travel (69%) tops the list of considerations for respondents from the Philippines.

Of noteworthy mention is that while costs of the whole vacation do have an impact on travel decisions especially for domestic travellers in Indonesia (61%), Malaysia (61%) and Thailand (60%), the weather of the destination takes precedence especially for those living in Thailand (62%), and Vietnam (55%). This could likely be due to concerns about extreme weather events that can happen quite frequently in both countries, reflecting the negative impacts of global warming.

Preferences of domestic destinations and airlines

Beach holidays are popular across the region with destinations known for their beautiful beaches ranked first in each country: Boracay in the Philippines, Bali in Indonesia, Da Nang in Vietnam, Sabah in Malaysia, and Phi Phi Island in Thailand

Waterfalls across Thailand were hotspots for domestic travellers, with 24% of respondents choosing them as favourite travel destinations.

National carriers (full-service airline) ranked first for the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam: Philippine Airlines (76%), Garuda Indonesia (74%), and Vietnam Airlines (72%), whereas in Malaysia (84%) and Thailand (83%), low cost carrier, AirAsia was the airline of choice likely due to higher price sensitivity for travellers in both the countries, similarly reflected when it came to travel considerations in the above chart.

When planning holiday activities, Southeast Asians proved to be foodies with about 5 in 10 planning a foodtrip experience, while 4 in 10 respondents from Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam were keen to shop locally. Beach holiday activities were especially popular for the Philippines, with 5 in 10 respondents choosing swimming alongside, supported too by other beach activities like paragliding or parasailing (13%). 65% of Thai respondents showed enthusiasm for touring, which was also a popular activity in Malaysia (45%), Indonesia (40%) and the Philippines (43%). Museum visits are especially popular in Vietnam and Malaysia with at least 2 in 10 inclined to visit a museum while on vacation.

From sightseeing to relaxing holidays, travel planners should consider that Southeast Asian travellers are drawn to activities that offer them opportunities to relax and unwind. With the diverse food culture in different states, the opportunity to eat like a local and discover hidden food gems will definitely be a draw!

Methodology: Based on Milieu Insight surveys with N=500 respondents who are working individuals aged 20-65 each from the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, conducted in April 2023.

“Laos doesn’t seem to have changed at all since I last visited. (…) Life flows according to the usual rhythms, the rhythms of a peasant life punctuated by nature and made up of days that are almost all the same: at dawn, small groups of people lined up along the road reach the plantations; in the local markets, made up of simple goods and lots of fruit, there is slow activity, people meet, talk, buy, sell. Outside some shack used as a shop, the young and the old spend their days idly by watching the traffic go by and chatting with each other while children, like all children in the world, play and run, still partly carefree, waiting for their time to help in the fields.”

I wrote this in 2013 when I was a few kilometres away from Bo Ten – a then forgotten town on the border with China – and I was about to cross the north of the country to reach China. Today, I’m preparing to make a very similar journey again, but I have serious doubts about being able to repeat those words and rediscover that almost enchanted country that had bewitched me every time I returned to visit it.

Read on to find out why. For now it is enough for you to know that the characters and performers are the same as 10 years ago: China in version 100.0, in the role of a local feudal lord who seeks to derive the greatest possible advantages from his vassals; Laos which, to continue the terminology of computers, I would still define in the “beta” version, wearing the clothes of a vassal; and then there’s me, the storyteller.

Perhaps speaking of an end is a bit exaggerated in absolute terms; maybe it is more appropriate to speak of a decline, and I have the clear feeling that my next trip to Laos, which should take place in the coming April, could bear witness to the beginning of the decline of a nation that has always had little but that has always tried to keep its identity intact with extreme dignity.

Laos has a population of about 7 and a half million inhabitants, distributed among forty-seven different ethnic minorities, with a majority formed by the Lao ethnic group. Each of these groups has its own language and culture. Laos is home to some of the most pristine regions in the world, made up of lush forests, towering mountains and, above all, by the meandering Mekong River, which divides into an internal estuary that gives life to an infinite number of islands and islets in the southern part of the country and which, above all, has represented over the years the most important commercial communication route in the country.

To the traveler who visits it, Laos offers paths between nature, spirituality and silence. A place more to breathe than to admire. Many times I have asked myself: “What is it that I find beautiful in Laos?” Perhaps it’s the ancient temples of Luang Prabang with the morning alms of the monks, or the lively life on the ‘long Mekong’? Or perhaps it’s the mysterious jars lying on the Xiangkhoang plateau, which alongside the legends associated with the jars themselves, has also seen history pass along its paths; a story made up of thousands of tons of bombs dropped during what the Americans themselves defined a ‘dirty war’? Or maybe it’s the waterfalls, the sunsets with the last rays of the sun caressing the rice fields, the waters of the Mekong that are placid one moment, rushing the next?

Perhaps it’s all these and other things put together. And maybe none of them, because in fact Laos doesn’t have its Angkor, its Walls, its Taj Mahal; but you don’t miss them, and you come back for its people, for its simplicity, for that atmosphere that Asia exudes from all pores.

Planning a trip to Laos is an exciting prospect and, with so many interesting places to visit, it can be said that travel begins in preparation. In this specific case I will follow a fairly classic route with the four of the most popular destinations in Laos – Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Plain of Jars and Luang Prabang – to which I will add Bo Ten again.

In short, like a murderer, I too will go back to the places of the crime to see if I will find the same Laos as many years ago. Will I find it again? Frankly I hope so, but I’m afraid not, and I’ll explain why right away: on December 3rd 2021, a high-speed railway was inaugurated, one that connects Vientiane with Bo Ten in a few hours, to then connect with a Chinese railway that will reach Kunming.

This ultra-modern project which has taken the name of ‘New Silk Road’ and which over time intends to extend to connect with the Kuala Lumpur–Singapore railway line with the aim of opening a new commercial route between China and the major ports of Southeast Asia, will surely have begun to produce an epochal change in a Laos that seems to be passing, at least in some areas of the country, from nothing to so much all too rapidly.

And it is precisely this Laos in the making that I want to go visit. It intrigues me to personally see how such a particular country is absorbing this path from a peasant economy, as it has been said several times, to a much more complex economic phase.

Simple life in Laos

As in the American Far West, the railway will bring progress, work, perhaps a decrease in the level of poverty, economic and social growth. It has already led, for example, to the clearing of unexploded ordnance left over from indiscriminate bombing during the Vietnam War, which was located along the route and which was removed during the execution of the works.

But there will also be a price to pay.

In America it was paid for with the disappearance of the bison and with the inability, or more probably with the unwillingness, to accompany the indigenous populations towards a different form of life adapted to the new times. In Laos, where 75 tunnels and a number of viaducts divided into 167 bridges had to be built, the environmental impact was evidently harmful and resulted in the loss of 318,000 hectares of natural forest. Not to mention that even in Laos the population will need to be supported in this rapid change in their daily life.

While it should be acknowledged that the new rail link has the potential to stimulate the economy of landlocked Laos, ultimately resulting in the country being part of a pan-Asian rail link which can only bring benefits, there are also concerns that this situation will increase the country’s indebtedness to China.

Laos will increasingly rely on international aid and financial assistance from the Beijing government, and Vientiane will be drawn further politically into the orbit of its unwieldy neighbour.

In short, a Laos to discover, to experience and to understand in the few days that I will have time to visit it. I am quite sure that once again, the sides of the rails will show me its most beautiful face. Maybe even the surprised faces of the people when they see that iron monster that could change their lives darting along the edge of their fields. A turning point, in short, which in the end we hope will be for the better.
