Our latest journey through Bangkok brought together two families—my wife Noi, our eight-year-old son Leonardo, and me, joined by our dear friends from Italy and their two children. This trip wasn’t just a holiday; it was a working adventure to collect material for Asian Itinerary’s travel-with-kids section. And our base for two unforgettable days? The newly renovated Aloft by Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit 11.

First Impressions: Modern, Colourful, and Irresistibly Fun

From the moment we stepped into the lobby, the energy was palpable. The hotel has recently undergone a complete renovation, and the result is a space that feels fresh, vibrant, and unapologetically playful. Bold colours, contemporary design, and quirky touches define the aesthetic—it’s the kind of place that makes both adults and children smile.

What immediately caught our attention was the lobby itself. Far from a conventional check-in area, it functions as a dynamic social hub where guests can work, relax, or simply soak in the atmosphere. The free pool table was an instant hit with Leonardo and our friends’ children. They spent hours challenging each other, their laughter echoing through the space as my wife and I enjoyed a drink at the adjacent WXYZ Bar. It’s this thoughtful integration of entertainment and comfort that sets Aloft apart from more traditional city hotels.

Sukhumvit 11: The Street That Never Sleeps

Stepping outside, we found ourselves in the heart of Sukhumvit Soi 11—Bangkok’s legendary entertainment district. The street buzzes with relentless energy day and night. Restaurants of every variety line the pavement, from street-food stalls serving authentic Thai favourites to upscale dining establishments. Pub signs glow, massage parlours beckon weary travellers, and the constant flow of taxis, motorbikes, and tuk-tuks creates a symphony of urban life that is uniquely Bangkok.

Yet somehow, once we retreated into the hotel, we were enveloped in an oasis of tranquillity. Despite being in the epicentre of Bangkok’s nightlife, the rooms are remarkably well soundproofed, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep after a day of exploring. It’s a rare balance that few city hotels manage to achieve.

Our Italian friends, visiting Thailand for the first time, were absolutely captivated by the location. The vibrant street scenes, the friendly chaos, and the sheer variety of experiences just outside the hotel door left them in awe. “We can’t believe this is real,” they kept saying, as we wandered past glittering shops and bustling markets.

A Room with a View of Infinite Bangkok

Our room was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate our family of three. The loft-inspired design, with its high ceilings and clean lines, created an airy, open feel. But the real showstopper was the floor-to-ceiling windows that seemed to frame the entire Bangkok skyline.

Lying in bed, with the city stretching endlessly before us, felt like floating above a sea of lights. By day, we watched the sprawl of Sukhumvit Road come to life; by night, the glittering galaxy of urban illumination transformed our room into a private observatory. Leonardo pressed his nose to the glass at every opportunity, spotting landmarks and watching the tiny cars crawl along the streets far below.

The 10th Floor Pool: Swimming with the Skyline

One of the hotel’s standout features is the outdoor Splash pool on the 10th floor. Overlooking the Bangkok skyline, this saltwater pool offers breathtaking views that made every swim feel like a special occasion. The pool was spacious enough for comfortable swimming, well-maintained, and complemented by a poolside bar serving refreshing cocktails and drinks.

Leonardo spent hours here—it quickly became his favourite spot in the hotel. The children’s pool area meant the younger guests could splash and play safely while adults lounged nearby. My wife and I alternated between cooling off in the water and relaxing on the sun loungers, soaking in the panoramic views. The atmosphere was laid-back and family-friendly, making it easy to while away entire afternoons.

A small note for sun-seekers: the pool area tends to lose direct sunlight after lunchtime as the sun moves behind the hotel building. However, the shade can be a welcome relief from Bangkok’s intense tropical heat, and the views remain spectacular regardless.

The adjacent 24-hour gym was another impressive feature. Though we didn’t use it during our short stay, the modern equipment and round-the-clock accessibility are a major plus for fitness enthusiasts who don’t want to miss a workout.

A Breakfast Journey Across Continents

The morning breakfast at Crave restaurant was one of the highlights of our stay. The buffet offered an extraordinary variety of cuisines that catered to every palate. Japanese options, Indian dishes, European and American classics—all were presented alongside Thai favourites like pad thai, rice porridge, stir-fried noodles, and other local delicacies.

Leonardo, ever the adventurous eater, was delighted by the array of choices. Our Italian friends were particularly impressed by the hospitality and the quality of the food. “This is better than many hotels in Europe,” they remarked, piling their plates with a mix of familiar comforts and new discoveries. The breakfast spread was so extensive that it could easily serve as brunch, keeping everyone satisfied well into the afternoon.

For late-night cravings or grab-and-go meals, the Re:fuel café operates 24 hours a day, offering convenient takeaway options—a godsend for travellers with unpredictable schedules.

Families Are Truly Welcome

What stood out most throughout our stay was the genuine family-friendly atmosphere. The hotel actively welcomes families, with children aged 12 and under staying free when using existing bedding. Cots are available free of charge, and the staff go out of their way to accommodate younger guests.

Khun Punn, who assisted with our arrangements, exemplifies this warm hospitality. His team’s thoughtful attention ensured our two families could make the most of our brief but memorable time in Bangkok. 

The location, despite its party-centric reputation, proved surprisingly convenient for families. A complimentary tuk-tuk shuttle service runs regularly to BTS Nana Skytrain station and MRT Sukhumvit station, making it easy to explore the city’s major attractions without navigating the busy streets on foot. Terminal 21 shopping mall, with its fantastic food court and entertainment options, is just a short ride away.

A Stay We Didn’t Want to Leave

Two days at Aloft by Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 flew by far too quickly. Leaving the hotel almost felt like a shame—we had found a comfortable, entertaining, and welcoming base.

The hotel’s blend of modern style, thoughtful amenities, and genuine hospitality creates an experience that appeals to families, couples, and solo travellers alike. For our friends visiting from Italy, it was a perfect introduction to Thai hospitality—vibrant, warm, and unforgettable.

As we packed our minivan to continue our road trip, Leonardo asked when we could come back. For once, I didn’t have an answer—but I knew we’d be returning to Aloft by Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit 11. Some hotels are just places to sleep; others become part of the adventure. This one is firmly in the latter category.

Highlights include the INNSiDE All Day Breakfast, featuring two eggs cooked to your liking, chicken sausage, smoked ham, bacon and potatoes, and the INNSiDE Egg Benedict, comprised of poached eggs, serrano ham, smoked salmon and Asian hollandaise sauce on an English muffin. There are places that simply spark a child’s imagination, and then there is Monsters Aquarium in Pattaya, Thailand, a venue that sent our eight-year-old son Leonardo into a whirlwind of pure, unfiltered excitement. As part of our ongoing “Travel Asia with Kids” series, our family was invited to experience this unique attraction, and we left with a camera full of photos (Leonardo’s camera), a heart full of happy memories, and a son who has not stopped talking about the animals he met.

Monsters Aquarium e is not your typical, polished aquarium. As one reviewer aptly put it, “Looks like nothing but if you go inside it is another world of animals”. And they were right. Behind its unassuming exterior, Monster Aquarium unfolds into a fascinating labyrinth of exotic creatures and interactive experiences spanning 16 distinct animal zones.

Leonardo’s Lens: A World of Wonder

For Leonardo, our seasoned little traveler, this was a paradise. His eyes went wide as we entered the fish tunnel—a 10-meter walkway surrounded by fish tanks that felt like walking on the bottom of a river. “Dad, look at that one! It’s huge!” he shouted, already pulling out his camera to capture the moment. He was mesmerized, snapping photo after photo of the strange and unusual fish, never wanting to miss a beat.

The aquarium is home to an astonishing variety of creatures, from giant fish you wouldn’t expect to see in Thailand to exotic land animals. We saw everything from giant snakes, iguanas, and white crocodiles to two-headed tortoises, albino snakes, and even a clouded leopard. The variety was truly mind-boggling. “Look at this, Mom! This one has six legs!” Leonardo exclaimed, completely captivated by the two-headed six-legged turtle we encountered. The sheer novelty of the animals on display kept him in a state of constant awe and discovery.

The Monsters Aquarium is home to over 1,000 species of exotic animals, and we felt like we were on a global safari. We saw flamingos, whose vibrant color amazed Leonardo, and watched him try to count all the different types of snakes in the reptile zone—from pythons to albino species, each one more fascinating than the last. The reptile house featured massive lizards and iguanas that seemed to pose for Leonardo’s camera, while the crocodile enclosure drew gasps from all of us.

Hands-On Animal Encounters

What truly sets Monsters Aquarium apart is the level of interaction. While we marvelled at the marine life, the terrestrial animal section provided some of our most memorable moments. Leonardo, an animal lover at heart, was thrilled to discover he could get up close and personal with many of the animals.

For a small fee, he was able to feed a variety of animals, including goats, deer, and even fish from a fishing rod. Watching him carefully hold out food to a gentle goat, his face a mixture of concentration and joy, was a precious moment. He couldn’t believe he could feed the fish with a bottle, a simple activity that brought him immense happiness. The “Petting Zone” was another huge hit, allowing him to interact with rabbits and other friendly creatures. He even had the chance to hold a parrot on his hand and get a photo with a snake—though I politely declined that one! “This is the best day ever,” he declared, trying to decide which animal was his favourite.

The entire experience took about two hours, which was the perfect amount of time to see everything without the kids getting tired. The interior layout was convenient, and all the animals were housed indoors, which was a welcome relief from the Pattaya heat. There was even a small café at the entrance for a quick drink and snacks to refuel the young explorer.

An Unforgettable Day for the Whole Family

While the venue may not have the sleek polish of a mega-aquarium, it offers something perhaps more valuable for families: a sense of discovery and hands-on fun. Many online reviews highlight how much children love it, calling it “very suitable for children to learn”. It’s a place where children’s natural curiosity is ignited.

The staff were friendly and facilitated the feeding and photo opportunities, like getting a photo with a snake, which we politely declined! It was Leonardo’s first time seeing so many exotic and rare animals up close, and he could not stop taking photos. He was the family photographer for the day, documenting every creature we saw.

Our verdict for families: If you are looking for an immersive, educational, and wildly entertaining family activity in Pattaya, Monsters Aquarium is a must-visit. As one TripAdvisor review perfectly summarised, it’s a “Lovely attraction” and “I can recommend this attraction for visitors of all ages”. It was certainly a day that our son will not soon forget.

He spent hours—literally hours—happily splashing away, turning bath time into his own private water adventure.

During our recent family media assignment to Pattaya, in Thailand, my wife, our son Leonardo, and I had the opportunity to explore Ramayana Water Park   a destination that had been on our radar for quite some time. Leonardo is no novice when it comes to aquatic entertainment; despite his young age, he has splashed, slid, and paddled through an impressive lineup of water parks across Asia and beyond. He knows what makes a park average, and he certainly knows what makes it great.

By the end of our trip, his verdict was emphatic: Ramayana went straight to the top of his personal leaderboards.

From the exact moment the turnstiles clicked open in the morning until the final park announcement signaled closing time, Leonardo ran on 100% pure, unadulterated enthusiasm. We were literally the first family to set foot inside the gates and among the absolute last to walk out—a true testament to the endless entertainment packed within this massive tropical sanctuary.

Spanning an incredible 160,000 square meters, Ramayana Water Park is built on a scale that immediately commands respect. Located roughly 40 minutes from central Pattaya, the park nestles against a picturesque backdrop of rolling green hills, natural lakes, and lush valley scenery. Unlike many conventional water parks that feel like vast fields of concrete and exposed fiberglass, Ramayana has been carefully integrated into its natural surroundings. Designed around the thematic concept of a long-lost ancient city, the park is filled with subtle architectural details, stone-carved ruins, and shaded pathways lined with tropical flora.

Whenever Leonardo needed a quick hydration break or my wife and I wanted to step out of the sun for a moment of quiet relaxation, our private cabana was waiting—allowing us to pace ourselves for what turned out to be an eight-hour aquatic marathon.

Built for Young Explorers

One of the greatest challenges for families traveling with eight-year-olds is finding an attraction that strikes the right balance between safety and thrill. At eight, children are often too old for simple toddler splash pads, yet they may not quite meet the height restrictions—or possess the appetite—for heart-stopping, 16-meter vertical drop slides.

This is precisely where Ramayana excels. The park features over 20 world-class water slides, categorized thoughtfully by intensity. What makes it exceptionally family-friendly is that children over 106 cm can access almost every single slide in the park, with the exception of the most extreme speed traps like the Aqualoop and Free Fall.

For Leonardo, this meant a vast playground of medium-intensity descents that delivered all the excitement of a “big kid” park without feeling overwhelming. He spent hours mastering the park’s multi-lane racer slides and curved tube rides:

• The Spiral & Serpentine: Excellent, smooth-flowing tube slides that allowed Leonardo to ride alongside us in double rafts, twisting through translucent tunnels with bright visual effects.
• The River Slide: A unique hybrid ride where you navigate a series of banked turns on a tube before making a soft, splashing landing directly into the flowing currents of the main river.
• Mat Racer: A friendly head-to-head racing slide where Leonardo loved competing against other kids at random, zooming down belly-first on soft mats to see who could create the biggest splash at the finish line.

The height standards and gentle water-landing zones allowed Leonardo to build his confidence quickly, transitioning from riding double tubes with us to eagerly climbing the slide towers on his own.

The Main Event: Leonardo’s Love Affair

While the slides provided plenty of bursts of adrenaline, there was one attraction that stole Leonardo’s heart above all others: The Lazy Wavy River.

Calling Ramayana’s river “lazy” is almost a misnomer—it is a 600-meter-long continuous water journey that winds gracefully around the perimeter of an ancient hill. It is officially the longest lazy river in Thailand, and it feels more like a scenic jungle boat ride than a pool.

Leonardo was completely captivated by its design. Floating along on a single tube (or sometimes just swimming freely alongside us with his life jacket), he navigated a route filled with interactive surprises: Mystical Grottoes & Caves: Dark, cool tunnels carved into artificial rock faces featuring misty water curtains and ambient light. Geysers & Water Bubblers: Unexpected jets of water shooting from the riverbed that kept Leonardo laughing and trying to steer his tube through the spray. Gentle Waves: Periodic wave generators that created small, ocean-like swells along specific stretches of the river, turning a tranquil float into a playful bobbing adventure.

We lost count of how many laps we completed around the 600-meter loop. For Leonardo, the Lazy River wasn’t just a place to relax between slides; it was an ongoing adventure zone where he could float, splash, dive, and explore to his heart’s content.

Culinary Delights & Cashless Convenience

A non-stop day of swimming, climbing towers, and battling waves burns calories at an astonishing rate. Fortunately, Ramayana’s approach to food and beverage services is designed to be as seamless and enjoyable as its aquatic attractions.

One of the most frustrating aspects of visiting a water park can be managing money while wet. Ramayana solves this entirely with a cashless RFID wristband system. Upon arrival, guests can load credit onto their wristbands using cash or card at the front desk or top-up kiosks. Whenever Leonardo wanted a cold bottle of water, a fresh fruit smoothie, or an afternoon ice cream, a simple scan of the wristband completed the transaction in seconds. We enjoyed a relaxed lunch at a shaded outdoor table overlooking the central lake, marveling at how refreshing it was to enjoy genuinely flavorful, high-quality food inside an amusement park setting.

From a parental standpoint, what impressed my wife and me most was the rigorous attention to safety and hygiene evident throughout the park.

Ramayana employs over 100 internationally certified lifeguards who are stationed strategically at every slide entrance, landing pool, wave pool, and along the entire length of the Lazy River. Their vigilance was constant—monitoring child heights, ensuring proper raft posture, and maintaining clear spacing between riders. Furthermore, the water throughout the park is filtered using state-of-the-art multi-stage purification systems utilizing crystal-clear groundwater from the park’s own deep wells, making it clean enough to meet drinking standards.

It is also clear that Ramayana’s management is dedicated to constant improvement. Meliá Chiang Mai‘s staff have helped regenerate more than seven acres of seasonally dry tropical forest in northern Thailand by planting 6,650 native trees through the hotel’s ongoing Meliá Go Green initiative, supporting biodiversity and forest restoration in one of the country’s most ecologically significant regions.

Almost 180 hotel team members joined the Doi Suthep Nature Center on June 26, 2026, to plant the latest 800 native trees across two rai in Mae Taeng and Mae Rim in Chiang Mai’s Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.

The 13th Meliá Go Green activity brought together volunteers to plant carefully selected native species that will help restore the area’s natural forest ecosystem, including Quercus semiserrata, Castanopsis diversifolia, Ficus capillipes and Antidesma bunius, among others.

Our two days at INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit were exactly that: a spontaneous city getaway that turned into a sky-high adventure for my wife, my son Leonardo, and me. What we discovered was a hotel that knows how to delight both the young and the young at heart – and, as we later learned, one that had only opened its doors in July 2023.

A Rooftop Pool That Stole Our Son’s Heart

Let’s be honest – Leonardo’s main occupation during our stay was the spectacular rooftop pool. And who could blame him? Perched on the 34th floor, this infinity pool features a transparent glass wall that extends beyond the building’s edge, offering the sensation of swimming into the Bangkok skyline. Considered one of the city’s most impressive rooftop pools, it’s the kind of feature that turns a hotel stay into an unforgettable memory. The pool area, with its sun loungers and Instagram-famous swing, became our family’s base camp. From dawn until dusk, Leonardo could be found splashing in the crystalline water while we soaked in the panoramic views stretching from the Chao Phraya River to the city’s distant horizons. What the brochures don’t tell you is how the light changes up there – golden at sunrise, blinding white at noon, and softly amber as the city starts to twinkle below.

Our Home Above the City

Our room was spacious enough to feel like a true urban sanctuary – one of 208 rooms across the property, each designed with the same contemporary flair. The generous sofa was transformed daily into Leonardo’s own bed by the thoughtful turndown service, a detail that made him feel like a VIP guest in his own right. Crisp white walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a pop of pink in the ensuite created a contemporary space that felt both luxurious and family-friendly. What caught our attention were the thoughtful touches: a restored vintage rotary phone on the bedside table, a Marshall amp in the lounge, and the hotel’s trademark wink logo appearing on everything from cups to towels. The room wasn’t just a place to sleep – it was part of the experience, with the cityscape unrolling beneath us like a living map.

The Kites Eatery: A Culinary Journey Through Thailand

Eating at The Kites Eatery on the 31st floor was an experience in itself. The restaurant’s retro design – 1970s-inspired with modern touches – features kite artwork adorning the walls, referencing the popular pastime of kite flying at Sanam Luang state park, with graphic glass walls depicting myriad kites in flight. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame uninterrupted city views, making every meal feel special. Open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., the eatery serves up central, northern, northeastern, and southern Thai cuisine à la minute, using quality ingredients sourced from local farms – a commitment we could taste in every bite.

The highlight was the pinto lunch experience, available daily from noon to 3 p.m. A pinto is a traditional Thai multi-tiered food container, reminiscent of an Indian tiffin carrier, historically used by workers and schoolchildren to carry homemade meals. Each tier contains a different dish – rice, curries, stir-fried vegetables – carefully stacked and served for a nostalgic dining experience that’s both visually striking and deeply satisfying. We tried two different four-course sets, all delicately prepared with fresh, local ingredients under the guidance of Executive Chef Katisak Pinkaew and his team. Each pinto was beautifully presented with perfectly balanced flavors, showcasing the best of Thai cuisine in an authentic and memorable way. The concept resonated with Leonardo, who delighted in uncovering each layer of the pinto, as if unwrapping a present. For families, it’s also wonderfully practical – no juggling multiple plates, just one beautiful stack of discovery.

A Coffee Break with a View

On the 34th floor, adjacent to the Open Living Lobby, we discovered the hotel’s “Brew and Bite Delight” promotion – available as a hot or cold set from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. It offers freshly brewed coffee paired with what might just be the best croissant in Bangkok, one that could make a French baker envious. The 1980s background music, unobstructed views over the city, and proximity to the Chao Phraya River create a perfect mid-day escape. We lingered longer than planned, watching the traffic crawl far below while feeling utterly removed from it all – a rare luxury in a city as frenetic as Bangkok.

Luz Tapas Bar: Spain Meets Bangkok

But dinner was the pièce de résistance. At Luz Bangkok Tapas Bar on the 33rd floor, the atmosphere shifts to elegant and romantic, with gold wires criss-crossing the ceiling in tribute to the Rama VIII Bridge – a design feature that becomes even more striking at night when the lighting catches the metallic angles. Under the stewardship of Madrid-born Juan Ignacio García Racionero, who has honed his craft at some of Spain’s finest kitchens, Luz offers authentic Spanish tapas, wines, beer on tap, cocktails, and signature sangrias, inviting diners on a culinary pilgrimage across Spain with a dynamic variety of local Thai ingredients embellished with Spanish flavours. Open from 4 p.m. until midnight, the tapas bar also offers a spectacle unlike any other in Bangkok – guests can peer directly into the underside of the infinity pool above, a surreal design twist that drew gasps from our table.

The real magic, however, happened when Nacho visited our table to personally describe each tapas dish as it arrived. We were treated to a parade of Spanish classics: Serrano ham, pan con tomate, olives, croquettes, tochos, Roman salad, and artichokes. Each morsel was crafted with care, and the hospitality was warm and generous. We opted for the chef’s recommended dinner, and washed it down with Luz signature cocktails first and red wine to follow. Leonardo, meanwhile, devoured a perfectly prepared burger while my wife and I enjoyed natilla and arroz con leche for dessert. Closing my eyes, surrounded by the twinkling lights of Bangkok’s skyline, the night view merging with the rooftop atmosphere, I was briefly transported to Spain – not bad for a family evening in Bangkok.

The Architecture: A Love Letter to Bangkok

What makes this hotel truly special is its design philosophy. The interiors draw inspiration from the city’s iconic landmarks: the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho, and Wat Phra Kaew. Each floor features original art pieces and line-drawing murals of Bangkok’s temple skyline. The building’s most dramatic feature is its inverted lantern design – the tower cantilevers outward as it climbs, defying conventional architecture. The lobby’s suspended cloud of frosted glass globes cascading down a mirrored ceiling sets a theatrical tone that elevates the entire experience.

Throughout our stay, the ever-changing view was our constant companion. From our room, from The Kites Eatery, from the pool, and from the tapas bar, Bangkok revealed itself in infinite variations. By day, the city’s sprawling urban tapestry, the Chao Phraya River’s winding curves, and the distant temples. By night, a glittering galaxy of lights stretching to the horizon. Arriving with my wife and our son Leonardo—a seasoned little traveler who has logged more miles than many adults—the day did not start well. As we pulled into the resort perched on the cliffs of Kalim Bay, the skies opened. And I mean pouring. The rain came down in thick sheets over the Andaman Sea, and it kept coming, on and off, for the entire two days we were there.

Our two-bedroom pool villa was a sanctuary. The moment we stepped inside, any frustration about the weather melted away. The first thing that caught our eye was a beautiful welcome composition of fresh flowers arranged on the bed—a lovely, personal touch that set the tone for our stay.

The layout was perfect for a family of three. Leonardo had his own bedroom, which meant after he went to sleep, my wife and I could enjoy the spacious living room without tiptoeing around like thieves. The villa featured luxury design touches throughout: textured wallpaper, high-end carpets, top-quality furniture, and impeccable construction that felt both solid and elegant.

The well-appointed kitchen came stocked with great coffee and drinks—essential for parents needing that morning boost. And the huge LED smart TV became our best friend during the rainy hours, keeping Leonardo entertained while we relaxed.

But the real showstopper? The private pool started right where the bedroom sliding door opened. The view over the beach below in Kalim Bay was absolutely amazing. From our villa, we felt like we could reach out and touch the water. At the same time, the resort is built on a steep hill, which means nearly all accommodations have both a pool and a sea view. Ours looked out over Patong Beach, surrounded by an incredible, manicured tropical landscape with massive old trees that mingle beautifully with the hotel structures.

Leonardo’s highlight was undoubtedly the giant swan-shaped pink floater he commandeered for the entire trip. Rain or no rain, that pool was in use.

A Romantic Evening at Latitude 98

Despite traveling with a child, we managed to carve out a genuinely special evening. The resort’s signature restaurant, Latitude 98, set up a romantic dinner for two—a private table with flowers and a red carpet laid out in the middle of the restaurant.

The three-course meal was exceptional. We started with great Thai starters that burst with authentic flavors. Then came the squid ink spaghetti with clams, perfectly al dente, followed by seared salmon that was cooked just right. All accompanied by a good wine and served by the warmest, most genuinely smiling waitresses we have encountered in Phuket. It was a reminder that even on a family trip, parents need those moments of connection.

Lazy Days and Floating Breakfasts

The second day was wonderfully lazy. We were awakened by the doorbell—we had completely forgotten about our 8am floating breakfast. The staff delivered a basket shaped like a heart, filled with morning goodies: fresh coffee, bread, jams, eggs, and bacon. We were lucky enough to enjoy this feast in our private pool during one of the rare hours when the rain actually stopped. Leonardo splashing nearby, my wife and I soaking in the warm water with coffee in hand—this was the vacation we had hoped for.

Later, we took a short drive into Patong for a simple pizza lunch, then returned to the resort for some true relaxation. While Leonardo enjoyed more pool time (that pink swan again), my wife and I indulged in a fantastic massage at Zana Spa. For Asian Itinerary, as part of our media trip to discover the real Krabi, we spent two nights at what I can only describe as the most soulful beachfront retreat in all of southern Thailand. Forget the sterile marble lobbies of five-star chains. Le Passetemps is not a hotel. It is a living, breathing archive of a life well-travelled. And it is absolutely explosive in its charm.

You sit at your table, feet in the sand, shaded by a canopy of leaves that has been there for longer than anyone can remember. Sunlight filters through in golden patches. The sea breeze cools your skin. Gentle waves are your background music.

Breakfast is served here every morning. Fresh tropical fruits. Made-to-order eggs. Strong Thai coffee. But honestly, you could serve me instant noodles at that table and I would still give it five stars. Because the view is the real meal.

From your seat, you look out across the pristine, almost private beach. The sand is soft and clean. No jet skis. No speedboats. No crowds. Just the Andaman Sea stretching out, and in the distance, the silhouette of Cape Chamuk Kwai and of Koh Hong archipelago jutting into the horizon. It is the kind of view that makes you put down your phone and just… breathe.

In the evenings, Le Bac-à-Sable transforms into an intimate dinner venue. The chef prepares authentic Thai cuisine and international dishes. And it never feels crowded. It feels like a private dinner party hosted by friends.

As part of our ongoing quest to discover the hidden corners of Thailand, we decided it was time to leave the crowded beaches of Phuket and Ao Nang behind. We wanted that feeling of discovery again. So, for Asian Itinerary, we pointed our car north from the tourist hub of Krabi and drove towards the wilder coast of Ao Thalane.

Often called the “Guilin of Thailand” due to its dramatic limestone karsts rising directly out of the emerald water, Ao Thalane (or Ao Tha Lane) felt like we had stumbled into a lost world. This wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was about immersing ourselves in the quiet rhythm of the mangroves. Here is the story of our 48-hour escape.

Day 1: Jungle Canals and Sunset Seafood

We arrived in the late morning and checked into our sanctuary for the next two nights: Le Passetemps. Tucked away on the quiet Tub Kaek coastline, this wasn’t your standard Thai resort. It felt like staying at an eccentric, well-traveled friend’s estate. The property is intimate—just a handful of wooden bungalows scattered around a lush garden and a private beach.

We immediately understood the positive reviews we had read online. Le Passetemps is peaceful, with a “Phuket of 20 years ago” vibe. The best part? They run their own travel agency on-site, which is incredibly convenient. They don’t just sell generic tours; they listen to what you want to do. After settling in, we took their advice and headed out for our first adventure.

The Crystal Waters of Tha Pom

Just a 20-minute drive from the resort lies a natural phenomenon you absolutely cannot miss: Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam (or Tha Pom Canal). This is a stunningly preserved natural park where a boardwalk winds through a pristine mangrove forest.

The magic of Tha Pom is the “Canals of Two Waters.” As you walk the 700-meter wooden bridge, you look down into the clearest, most ethereal blue-green water I have ever seen. It looks like a natural swimming pool. And all around us, rising dramatically from the emerald greenery, were the tall karst mountains that Krabi is famous for—their limestone cliffs towering over the mangroves like ancient guardians. The view was simply breathtaking.

We found the designated swimming area and jumped in. The water was cool and refreshing, flowing from a natural spring out to the sea. You can rent a kayak here too, but we opted just to float and stare up at the intertwining branches of the trees above.

After working up an appetite swimming and hiking the nature trails, we drove to The Bay Thalane Restaurant. Located right on the estuary, this isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a front-row seat to the limestone canyon views. We grabbed a table overlooking the water.

As we dug into fresh seafood and spicy Thai salads, we watched other kayakers paddling slowly through the channels. The atmosphere was laid-back, the ingredients were fresh, and the view of the karsts reflecting off the still water was mesmerizing. It was the perfect, relaxed lunch spot before our big day ahead.

Day 2: Paddling the Canyon

This was the main event. The next morning, with the sun high and the tide rising (crucial for navigating the mangroves), we returned to the bay and drove directly to the launch point at Thalane Bay.

This is hands-down the best kayaking in Krabi. The route takes you deep into a labyrinth of towering limestone cliffs and narrow canyons. Paddling through the Din Daeng Canyon (sometimes called the “Green Canyon”) was surreal. The walls are steep, covered in dripping ferns, and the silence is only broken by the calls of birds and the splash of monitor lizards sliding into the water.

We navigated through “hongs” (collapsed cave systems) where we floated in hidden lagoons completely enclosed by rock walls. It felt like being in a scene from Jurassic Park. Even if you are a beginner, the bay is protected from the open sea wind, making it an easy paddle. We spent about 3 hours exploring, including a stop at a “Monkey Beach” where we watched macaques playing in the trees.

If you want to see a side of Thailand that hasn’t been polished for the masses, go to Ao Thalane. Stay at Le Passetemps for the quiet vibes, cool off at Tha Pom for the unreal clear water, and paddle Thalane Bay for the adventure of a lifetime.

One piece of practical advice before you go: always carry water with you. The Thai heat and humidity are no joke, especially when you are kayaking under the midday sun or hiking the nature trails at Tha Pom. There are small shops at the entrances of these parks, but once you are deep inside the mangrove canyons or floating in those hidden lagoons, there are no vendors in sight. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly. We each carried a reusable 1.5-liter bottle, and we finished every drop by the time we returned to shore. Trust me, you will thank yourself later.

It’s the perfect antidote to a busy city life.

Affording sweeping views of Bangkok’s skyline from the hotel’s 33^rd floor, LUZ sits beneath the transparent base of the hotel’s infinity pool, allowing diners to peer into the pool above while dining.

Among the standout dishes are Steak tartar y Gilda San Sebastian that pairs Wagyu tenderloin tartare with brown and white anchovies and Spanish pickles on ciabatta, and Tacos de Rabo de Toro, with braised oxtail, roasted piquillo peppers and smoked Idiazabal cheese are folded into homemade corn tacos.

Seafood dishes feature prominently throughout the menu, including Carpaccio de Gamba Roja, a delicate red prawn carpaccio finished with espelette pepper and extra virgin olive oil, and Lomo de Corvina al Pil Pil de Azafran y Aji Amarillo, showcasing croaker with a saffron-infused pil-pil sauce layered with yellow chilli and fish collagen.

Other highlights include Pulpo Frito served with mashed potato and paprika oil, black squid-ink fideuà with red prawns and octopus, and a seafood paella with clams, mussels and squid.

Desserts continue the Spanish influence with a burnt Basque chocolate cheesecake served with white chocolate ice cream, warm chocolate fondant with vanilla custard, and creamy rice pudding with confit strawberries.

“This menu is very personal to me because it draws on the different regions and flavours I grew up with in Spain,” said Chef Nacho. “Spanish cuisine changes dramatically from one region to another, and I wanted the menu to encapsulate that diversity and match the energy of LUZ’s, with dishes designed to be shared over cocktails and incredible views of Bangkok”.
