There is a moment during every family road trip when you realize you’ve stumbled onto something special. For us, it happened the moment our minivan pulled into Watermill Resort at Khao Yai, Thailand, and Leonardo—our eight-year-old—bolted out before the engine had even cooled. “Papa! There’s a boat on a rope!” He was right. And that was just the beginning. The Setting: A Watermill, Two Rivers, and the Rainy Season We visited during the rainy period, which turned out to be an unexpected gift. The two rivers that border this property were raging—not dangerously, but with a dramatic, cinematic energy that made the resort’s name feel earned. The giant watermill that gives the place its identity spun steadily, a hypnotic backdrop to every meal and every lazy afternoon. This is a resort built on a plain, but “plain” feels like the wrong word. The grounds are manicured and thoughtful, with treehouses perched above the action and platforms jutting out over the water. The kids discovered a suspended bridge early on and claimed it as their territory. The Kids’ Verdict: Paradise Found Let me be blunt: Leonardo and his friend Gabriel (also 8) did not want to leave. Ever. The resort’s genius lies in how it engages children without ever feeling like a “kids’ club.” The river barge—linked to a rope, so you can pull yourself across—became their daily expedition. They explored the aviaries where parrots and exotic birds greeted every morning with a chorus that felt genuinely tropical, and spent hours on the swings scattered across the lawn. The swimming pool deserves its own paragraph. Large, clean, and surrounded by nature, it transformed at dusk. As the sun dipped, dozens of light bulbs flickered on, turning the water into something magical. The kids swam until we physically removed them. Nature, Tamed but Still Wild One morning, Leonardo spotted a baby monitor lizard on the shore. The staff told us this was common—the resort exists in a kind of negotiated peace with its natural surroundings. Friendly dogs roam the manicured lawns, adding to the “home away from home” feeling that family-owned resorts so often promise but rarely deliver. The ducks, the birds, the occasional lizard—this is nature at its best: tamed but still wild enough to surprise you. The Rooms: Designed for Families Who Travel Together Here’s where Watermill really understood our group. We booked two rooms in a complete house with a connecting door. This meant Leonardo and Gabriel could bounce between rooms like the chaos gremlins they are, while my wife and I could still have a semblance of adult conversation next door. The rooms are generously sized—not cramped, not overstuffed. They’re the kind of spaces where you actually unpack rather than just live out of a suitcase. The balconies facing the river became our morning coffee spot and our evening wind-down zone. Food, Coffee, and the Small Pleasures A proper coffee shop with proper coffee is not a given in this part of Thailand. Watermill has one. The bagels (homemade, we learned) are a standout, and room service made those “we’re too tired to wrangle children at a restaurant” evenings much easier. Breakfast is included and offers a wide variety. The homemade bagels and toast are a genuine highlight—not just resort-food passable, but genuinely good. The Verdict for Asian Itinerary Families Would we return? Absolutely. Would we recommend it to other families? Without hesitation—with one caveat: you need a car. The resort is a 20-minute drive from Khao Yai National Park and not walkable to much. But that’s part of the charm. You’re not here for urban convenience. You’re here for the sound of two rivers, the spin of a watermill, and the sight of your children genuinely, gloriously unplugged. Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has rolled out a single mobile platform for arrival cards, travel promotions and — eventually — visa services. Here’s what it means for your next trip to Asia. For anyone who has juggled multiple websites, paper forms and last-minute queues while preparing to enter Thailand, the launch of a new government-backed app promises at least some relief. The Immigration Bureau has officially introduced THIM, a digital platform designed to consolidate immigration and travel services for foreign nationals into one place. The app has been available since 1 August 2026 through the App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei AppGallery. According to the bureau, it has already recorded more than 600,000 downloads and over 580,000 users — a striking adoption rate of 97.2% of total downloads. Why Thailand Is Digitising Its Borders Pol Lt Gen Panumas Boonyalug, commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, said rising visitor numbers were placing increasing pressure on the capacity of airports and border checkpoints. The bureau, which operates under the Royal Thai Police, is turning to digital technology to simplify procedures while maintaining national security. His stated goal is to make entering and staying in Thailand “more convenient, faster, safer, and more seamless” for foreign nationals. It is a familiar challenge across Asia. As tourism rebounds and long-stay travel grows, immigration systems designed for a different era are being asked to process far more people, more quickly, without compromising security. THIM is Thailand’s answer to that equation. What the THIM App Does Right Now The most immediate practical benefit for tourists and short-term visitors is straightforward. THIM currently provides access to the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) and a selection of travel promotions. The TDAC remains available through the Immigration Bureau’s website, but the app offers another channel for travellers to complete and submit the digital arrival card before departure. For anyone arriving on a busy weekend or during peak season, having that form submitted in advance is a small but genuinely useful time-saver. A Closer Look at the TDAC The TDAC replaced Thailand’s traditional paper arrival card and must be completed before travel. Completing it through THIM does not change the requirement itself — it simply gives travellers a single, official channel for the process, alongside travel information and promotions. What’s Coming Next for Expats and Long-Stay Visitors For expats and longer-stay visitors, the more significant changes are still planned rather than available. The Immigration Bureau expects eventually to add: Queue bookings Certificates of stay Visa extensions 90-day reporting Visa-on-arrival services at authorised immigration checkpoints If introduced as outlined, those functions could reduce the need to use separate online systems or attend an immigration office for routine processes. That would be a meaningful shift for the many foreigners who call Thailand home, or who split their year between Thailand and elsewhere in Asia. Travellers should nevertheless continue to follow current Immigration Bureau requirements until individual THIM services are formally activated. Announced features are not the same as live features, and immigration rules remain the authority. Identity Checks and Personal-Data Protection The bureau said THIM has been designed with data accuracy and security as central features. The app can read passport information and electronic passport chips through Near Field Communication (NFC), and uses liveness detection and facial comparison for identity verification and authentication. Its stated safeguards include encryption during transmission and storage, the separation of biometric details from other personal data, access controls and activity logging. Personal information is protected under Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act BE 2562 (2019) and other applicable laws, the bureau said. The application uses Amazon Web Services through the AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region, with measures covering threat detection, monitoring, encryption and communications between systems. For travellers who have grown cautious about handing over biometric data to apps, those details matter. The separation of biometric data from other personal information is a particularly relevant safeguard. Explore Thailand: Travel Offers in the Same App THIM’s Explore Thailand feature links users to participating businesses offering coupons and privileges, redeemable by QR code or promotion code under each company’s terms and conditions. Launch partners included The Mall Group, GrabTaxi (Thailand), Wipay, True Corporation, The Minor Food Group, Minor International and Bangkok Dusit Medical Services. The bureau plans to broaden the feature to include details of attractions, accommodation and activities. It is an unusual move for an immigration app — blending border formalities with consumer travel promotions. Whether travellers embrace that combination remains to be seen, but it does point to a broader ambition: positioning THIM as a companion for the entire journey, not just the arrival hall. What This Means for Your Next Trip to Asia For now, the sensible approach is simple. If you are travelling to Thailand, download THIM and use it to complete your TDAC before departure. Keep an eye on official Immigration Bureau channels for confirmation when additional services go live, rather than assuming they are already available. For repeat visitors and expats, the app is worth watching. If queue bookings, visa extensions and 90-day reporting do eventually move into a single platform, the change could remove a significant amount of administrative friction from living and travelling in the region. Thailand has long been a gateway for travellers exploring Asia, and its immigration processes shape first impressions for millions of visitors each year. A functioning, secure digital hub would be a welcome upgrade — provided the promised services arrive, and arrive reliably.
