An Afternoon with Ajarn Haew at The Mu Taste Cafe On a tranquil afternoon in Nonthaburi, Bangkok, my colleague Pluto and I went to visit my long time fiend Irine and found ourselves immersed in a unique spiritual experience that left a lasting impression. The venue, The Mu Taste Cafe (https://www.facebook.com/themutastecafe), served as the perfect backdrop for an event that seamlessly blended tradition, spirituality, and community. The Legacy of A Kong and the Nakaraja Shrine The ceremony was led by Ajarn Haew, a highly respected spiritual leader and the fourth-generation descendant of A Kong, the founder of the renowned Nakaraja Shrine. A Kong, also known as Tan Eng Ho, was a Chinese immigrant who arrived in Thailand in the late 19th century. He was deeply devoted to the principles of Taoism and established the Nakaraja Shrine as a place of worship dedicated to the Naga, a revered deity in Southeast Asian and Hindu-Buddhist traditions. Nakaraja, meaning “King of the Nagas”, is a title given to the supreme leader of these mythical serpent beings. Narratives of the Nagas hold cultural significance in the mythological traditions of many South Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, as well as within Hinduism and Buddhism. The Nakaraja Shrine quickly became a spiritual hub for the local Chinese-Thai community, offering a space where people could seek blessings, guidance, and protection. A Kong’s teachings emphasised the importance of virtue, proper conduct, and respect for the divine—values that continue to be upheld by his descendants. Ajarn Haew’s Spiritual Leadership As we gathered with hundreds of others who had come to seek guidance and blessings, the atmosphere was charged with anticipation and reverence. Ajarn Haew began the ceremony with a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the teachings passed down from his great-grandfather, A Kong. He emphasised the importance of living with honour and integrity, urging everyone to behave properly and uphold the values that have been cherished within the community for generations. Ajarn Haew then moved among the crowd, touching each person’s head as he offered blessings. The blessings were deeply meaningful, invoking good luck, financial prosperity, and overall good fortune, resonating with all who attended. His words were imbued with a sense of hope and encouragement, reminding us of the importance of spiritual well-being in our daily lives. A Personal Encounter At one point, Ajarn Haew noticed there was a foreigner among the Thai attendees—me. He approached me with a curious and gentle demeanour, ‘feeling’ me with his hands. What followed left me speechless: Ajarn Haew began to divine aspects of my past and present with surprising accuracy. He spoke of things that only I could know, and then made a few predictions about my future that were not only insightful but also very welcomed. It was a moment of profound connection that added a deeply personal layer to the experience. A Harmonious Blend of Ritual and Ambiance In addition to the blessings and personal encounters, Ajarn Haew performed divinations and fortune-telling, offering personal insights to those who sought his wisdom. The blend of ancient rituals with the warm, welcoming ambiance of The Mu Taste Cafe created an experience that was both profound and uplifting. Adding to the uniqueness of the event was the setting itself. Located along the river, The Mu Taste Cafe is famous for its commitment to healthy food that nourishes both the body and the spirit. This serene riverside location, combined with the cafe’s focus on well-being, made it an ideal venue for such a spiritually charged event, where the physical and the spiritual harmoniously intertwined. A Continuation of A Kong’s Vision For those unfamiliar with the history behind this ceremony, the Nakaraja Shrine holds a special place in the hearts of many in the community. Established by A Kong, the shrine has been a beacon of spiritual guidance for generations. A Kong’s dedication to Taoist principles and his deep connection with the Naga deity laid the foundation for a spiritual legacy that continues to thrive under the leadership of Ajarn Haew. Ajarn Haew, as his descendant, continues to uphold these traditions, ensuring that the teachings and blessings remain a vital part of the community’s spiritual life. His role is not just that of a spiritual leader, but also a custodian of a rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through the generations. Conclusion: A Day of Reflection and Renewal As we left The Mu Taste Cafe that day, we carried with us a sense of peace and renewed purpose, grateful for the opportunity to witness and partake in such a sacred tradition. It was a reminder of the enduring power of spirituality, the importance of community, and the lasting impact of A Kong’s vision in our lives.
