The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) is proud to present Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles from leading Japanese contemporary artist Chiharu Shiota. The exhibition is part of a global exhibition tour that will make its only stop in Southeast Asia at Museum MACAN and will feature more than a hundred works from almost thirty years of the artist’s practice since the 1990s. Shiota’s work is inspired by her own personal experiences or emotions which are expanded into universal themes such as absence, existence, walls, and windows. By engulfing ordinary objects in immense thread structures, she has been able to redefine the concept of memory and consciousness. Museum MACAN is Indonesia’s first world-class museum dedicated to international and contemporary art. Since opening its doors in 2017, the museum has established itself as one of the top institutions in Southeast Asia and a must-visit location for anyone visiting Indonesia with a robust exhibition program connecting the Indonesian audience to international contemporary art while creating a platform for leading contemporary Indonesian artists to showcase their work to a wider audience. Aaron Seeto Aaron Seeto is the Director of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN) in Jakarta. He is a curator and museum professional with a background in contemporary Asian art. He came to Indonesia to lead the development of Museum MACAN, a private museum which houses a collection of Indonesian and international modern and contemporary art, and which has a mission to stimulate art education and art appreciation across the Indonesian community. In Indonesia, he has presented major exhibition projects by leading artists including Agus Suwage, Melati Suryodarmo, Arahmaiani, Lee Mingwei, Xu Bing, Yayoi Kusama and Chiharu Shiota. He was formerly Curatorial Manager of Asian and Pacific Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia where he led the curatorial team responsible for the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT8). For eight years prior, he was the Director of Sydney’s 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art where he helped to build the organisation’ s reputation as a leading institution for contemporary Asian and Australian art.
