We are thrilled to share an exciting news with our valued guests and partners. Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort in Bali, Indonesia, has officially been awarded the prestigious Travelife Gold Certification, a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainable tourism. Travelife Certified accommodation providers are committed to creating better places to live, work and visit. Travelife is a global accommodation sustainability certification body. Respected for being impartial and robust, our comprehensive set of GSTC-recognised requirements cover emissions, biodiversity, human rights, fair labour, child safeguarding and animal welfare. https://travelifestaybetter.com/ This certification is a significant milestone for us, reflecting our dedication to environmental and social responsibility. At Munduk Moding Plantation, we believe in creating memorable experiences while minimizing our ecological footprint. The Travelife Gold Certification recognizes our efforts in promoting sustainable practices and ensuring the well-being of the communities we engage with. What does this mean for you as our guests and partners? By choosing Munduk Moding Plantation for your getaway, you are contributing to a positive impact on the environment and local communities. From eco-friendly initiatives to supporting local communities, we are on a journey to make every stay with us not only enjoyable but also responsible. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey with us. We look forward to welcoming you to Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort, where sustainable luxury meets the beauty of Bali. Plastic Recycling Center And Waste Bank An important initiative from Munduk Moding Plantation’s sustainability department is the Plastic Recycling Center and Waste Bank. MMP is collecting pla stic waste from its hotel and from local communities and brings it to its Waste Bank. Payments are made in kind through free English and dance classes as well as financially. This waste is processed in our Plastic Recycling Center to make new products from the recycled plastic as well as works of art. The final products are diverse and useful for the hotel and guests, including wardrobe hangers, directional signs and keychains. Artists use the material to create works of art. Our plastic recycling process allows us to give a second life to plastic waste, cleaning up the environment around us, and creating a circular flow that keeps plastic out of nature. Munduk Moding Plantation is built on a coffee plantation, and we are trying to preserve, as best as we can, the natural resources and the beautiful landscape in this area which, certainly compared to the South of the Island, has very limited international tourism. We want to embark on a journey to improve day by day and year after year our hotel’s efficiency and to reduce to the maximum extent our impact on the environment. We have chosen to become Green Globe and Travelife Sustainable Accommodation Member with this in mind. We have fully involved our staff in this decision and also provide information to our guests who are invited to participate: • Water conservation, energy conservation, reduction of pollution, and waste management information is available for guests, and they are invited to support us. • Staff is trained in environmental management issues. • MMP welcomes all suggestions on how our sustainability practices can be improved with real interest. • MMP works closely with neighbor association to improve awareness on tourism sustainability.

Together with our sister company – Munduk Coffee – we produce specialty coffees from our own coffee beans and those of our close neighbours. Beans are hand picked when they are fully red, necessitating two or three rounds of harvest, typically between April and August. Our total harvest is about 1500 kg of dry bean. At about 1100 meters above sea level the micro climate at Munduk Moding Plantation is ideal to grow coffee which was first introduced by the Dutch in the nineteenth century. We are still relying on descendants of coffee trees they imported at the time and which, word has it, were shipped from the island of Sulawesi. Historical records from Dutch times indicate that coffee was grown on a large scale in the area. Until the nineteen eighties, the hill stations of Gobleg and Munduk were recognised as the most productive areas on the island to grow coffee. Munduk Coffee Getaway Come and experience it at Bali’s only luxury resort located on a working coffee plantation. This programme provides a unique introduction to Munduk coffees, from harvesting cherries, producing green beans to roasting and blending and of course, sampling the fruits of the harvest through a cupping session. But there is more: our coffees are used in our welcome drink, our desserts and even in our Spa. You’ll get to enjoy all of this with The Munduk Coffee Getaway package – a sensory experience that has no parallel in Bali. You will learn about growing and harvesting coffee and observe the harvest as well the processing of our beans; you an actively participate in it should you wish. You’ll also be treated to a roasting session – both in the traditional and modern manner and you will get to roast your own beans provided by Munduk Coffee Team. In addition, you will experience the many uses we make of coffee in Bali: from the numerous ways in which you can sample our coffees, to a relaxing massage involving a coffee scrub. Package includes : 2 nights stay in a chosen Suite or Villa Daily Ala Carte Breakfast MMP’s Signature immunity-boosting welcome drink on arrival, featuring an extract from our coffees Daily afternoon coffee served with home-made cookies and cakes Guided walk around our coffee plantation and observation of the cherry harvest in which you can participate as well Guided visit to our wet milling site with an introduction to coffee processing techniques Visit to our drying site and exploration of drying techniques: Visit to our roasting room Private Roasting session Cupping – sampling of different Munduk coffees.
This special New Year’s celebration – Nyepi, meaning “to keep silent” falls on the day after the dark moon of the spring equinox in the Balinese Saka Calendar, when the day and night are of approximately equal duration. This religious ceremony is most important and sacred Hindu holiday on Bali and is bigger and more lavish than any other in the year. Nyepi is a day that the Hindu Balinese dedicate completely to connect more deeply with God (Hyang Widi Wasa) through prayer, fasting and meditation with an additional layer of introspection of the Self, to evaluate personal values such as love, truth, patience, kindness, and generosity. On Nyepi day (23-24 March 2023), the island of Bali turns off all lights and sounds, stops all traffic, deserts all worldly activities, even the airport is closed for 24 hours and no flights are running, everyone meditates, while complete silence and serenity reigns over the entire island. It’s indeed a special experience, not only for the Balinese but also for all the visitors and tourists that are on Bali during Nyepi Day. On the eve of Nyepi, celebrations are held with large papier-mache giants, called Ogoh-Ogoh, paraded on the beach accompanied by loud gamelan music. These are then torched and, it is believed, that with the conflagration, any evil spirits that have brought disease and misery to the island during the past year will have also been banished. On the day after Nyepi, known as Ngembak Geni, social activity picks up again quickly, as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform certain religious rituals together. Stargazing becomes the most favourite activity on the night of Nyepi. Have you ever seen a Milky Way like an ocean of stars above the sky at the night? We mean the image of Milky Way like in Hollywood movie capturing the splendid galaxy. At the night of Nyepi, you can experience this real sensation. Because of no light allowed during Nyepi, it practically makes only moon and stars fullfill a whole light of Bali. You don’t need to camp in the middle of jungle, to explore impeccable stargazing spot. Just sitting on terrace or balcony, the picturesque ocean stars can be enjoyed. Once again, Nyepi leads human to discover something spectacular from nature in simply way. Located in the untouched North of Bali, Munduk Moding Plantation offers a special experience and celebration of the Nyepi day! Nestled in a working coffee plantation & surrounded by jungle, this spectacular place is the dream location for a relaxing getaway. Celebrate Nyepi in award-winning infinity pool beneath the unobstructed starlit sky! If you are in Bali during Nyepi (23-24 March) we invite you to experience this unique celebration and a Silence day up in the North of Bali staying at Munduk Moding Plantation.

Get ready to be reunited with the wonders of Bali! From 1 May the island is fully open for tourism and the last remaining obstacles – mandatory PCR tests on arrival and quarantine – have been removed. Many international carriers have restarted flights and it is as easy to get to Bali as it has ever been. Now is the time to enjoy an exclusive getaway at Munduk Moding Plantation. Located on more than 5 hectares of a working coffee plantation set in the hill country of North Bali with some of the best views on the Island, you can experience the magic of this hideaway and revel in the freedom to drift between indoor and outdoor spaces. Our Jacuzzis and infinity pools have won many prizes and are an unparalleled vantage point for observing how nature creates art as the light of the sun plays with the horizons of the Bali Sea and the towering volcanoes in Java. With the coffee harvest in full swing this summer you can experience the entire coffee cycle from harvesting to processing and roasting our premium coffees. There are endless opportunities to immerse yourself in this ritual and discover the many varieties and uses we make of our coffees – including in our Spa where it is used as a scrub! Enjoy peace of mind when staying at Munduk Moding Plantation as we continue to follow strict safety protocols and adhere to certified health and hygiene procedures with the comprehensive Care & Safety programme. To celebrate the re-opening of the Island we are offering a special four day “Back to Bali” programme that allows you to enjoy Munduk Moding Plantation and discover this beautiful part of the Island. Why not enjoy some world class snorkeling or diving after a stay at MMP in East Indonesia in some of the most pristine coral seas on Earth – we are offering some unique trips on our own traditional Phinisi KMS Shakti where this summer you will have the possibility to swim with whalesharks; the largest fish in the ocean.

Some of Munduk Moding Plantation guests never leave their villa, and we don’t blame them when they’re getting such a high level of luxurious service and everything they could ever want at a moment’s notice. But we encourage all guests to take advantage of all the outdoor activities surrounding them in Munduk area while staying at Munduk Moding Plantation. Just imagine the feeling of exploring some undiscovered places on the beautiful island of the Gods and getting a taste of the fresh mountain air, dazzling mountain scenery and magnificent scenic beauty. Munduk, despite its scenic viewpoints, easy driving and rolling mountains is one spot in Bali that is not visited frequently compared to other areas of Bali. Off the beaten track and away from the rush of south Bali, Munduk and its surrounding area are a little gem that is well worth exploring. There are so many things to do in Munduk that you can easily spend a couple of days in the area without falling short of distractions. Arriving on the road above the lake, the opportunities for stunning photos are endless! A lot of little cafés alongside the road have created their own viewpoint with small bamboo lookout structures that will allow you to get amazing shots. The Munduk region is home to several mountain lakes. Apart from Danau Beratan (the one with the temple) there are Danau Buyan and Danau Tamblingan, also known as twin lakes, both located in the caldera of Bedugul volcano, now extinct. Lakes are surrounded by mountain ranges, one of them is known as a Wanagiri Hidden Hill, and is a truly beautiful bite of Bali. The twin lakes dazzle the visitors due to their natural beauty and their quiet and peaceful atmosphere. All along the way around the lakes, there are viewpoints with wonderful views of both lakes, which are perfect for taking some amazing pictures for memories. The Island of a Thousand Temples There is a reason why they call Bali ‘the island of a thousand temples’! No visit to Bali would be complete without a trip to see at least one of Bali’s temples. There are over 20,000 Pura (temple in Balinese language) in Bali at last count, a widespread marker of Bali’s exuberant culture. Ancient Bali temples dot the highlands and coasts, boasting magnificent centuries-old architecture. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is a historical sight you probably have already seen before even setting foot in Bali. You’ll find the Ulun Danu Beratan temple at 1239 m above sea level on the shores of the volcanic Lake Beratan just a short 20min drive from Munduk Moding Plantation. Together with Ulun Danu Batur in Batur village this temple is one of the most important water temples on the island and she belongs to the 9 directional temples on Bali which means she had to be built in a very special place. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, also called the goddess of fertility since Lake Beratan provides water for the numerous rice fields which together with the subak make Bali such a unique place. There is a reason why they call Bali ‘a dream island destination and heaven on earth’! The sunrises in Bali are spectacular and something not to be missed! Pura Ulun Danu Beratan is one of those places you will never be disappointed getting up early. In the early morning, the water is still, and the sun slowly rises over the mountains behind the temple. A thin mist rises from the lake and hangs in the air, surrounding the temple, giving it a somewhat surreal appearance. In addition to the “MMP Experience Programme” which is included in your room price, there are a number of exciting activities which the resort can arrange for you. Take some time to absorb the beautiful nature that surrounds Munduk resort. Their team has prepared a selection of enriching excursions and activities. There is something for everyone that will enrich your vacation and leave you with more than just photographic memories. Embark on a journey of discovery and savour the raw appeal of nature with your next stay at Munduk Moding Plantation.

Any coffee lover worth his bean or indeed anyone on an Indonesian tour would do well to include a trip to Munduk in their itinerary. If only to visit the birthplace of Kopi Luwak coffee, which gained worldwide fame after it was featured in the Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson starring movie, The Bucket List. Kopi Luwak is one of the world’s most expensive coffees and is harvested from the excreta of civet cats that eat coffee berries as part of their diet. The coffee’s distinctive aroma and flavor is believed to be derived from the civet’s digestive enzymes that break down the coffee berries, all of which combine to make it upwards of fifty dollars a cup in fine-dining restaurants! Munduk is located 800 meters above sea level with conditions that are ideal for coffee-cultivation. It is no wonder that the hills of Munduk are dotted with coffee plantations, but also boasts aloe, cardamom, cocoa, vanilla, rice fields and anything else that will grow in its fertile soil. It is also one of Bali’s most pleasing mountain retreats and offers much more than coffee, making it well worth the reason for a tour to Asia. Verdant and cool with fresh mountain air, its lush-scape flows with waterfalls and lakes and is ideal for treks and walks galore. Walks in the hills are a pleasure as most of it is shaded, with bird song everywhere and little coffee stalls along the way, making for idyllic pit stops. It really is a coffee lover’s paradise, though its beauty makes it paradise for anyone that appreciates nature at its most gorgeous. Indeed to walk amidst hills wreathed in mist is to feel the divine. Munduk is dotted with charming places to stay, ranging from the affordable to the boutique and ultra-luxurious, making it a key part of luxury Asia trips. If luxury is your idea of a holiday then head to the gorgeous Munduk Moding Plantation to experience unmatched hospitality set amidst pristine green for as far as the eye can see. The plantation is a luxury resort and spa set in a working coffee plantation and bears the proud tag of best Luxury Eco Resort in Indonesia. The resort employs people from the Munduk and Gobleg villages to care for guests, and also engages them in activities that maintain the tropical rainforest and water preservation. Aesthetically styled, the resort is a perfect example of design in congruence with nature. Designed by award-winning Balinese architect Popo Danes, it features Balinese architecture with modern function. To ensure privacy and the well-being of each guest there are only nine villas and three suites in the resort, all tucked away amidst the lush vegetation, with spectacular views of rolling hills and jungle all the way to the coast. For true relaxation and indulgence their stunning spa made from bamboo and alangalang (palm fronds) is irresistible. A range of massages and treatments are on offer, though my personal favorite was the coffee bean scrub from their plantation grown kopi (beans). A treatment that was organic, revitalizing and locally sourced ticked all of my checkboxes! Since the resort is on a coffee plantation guests can enjoy wonderful organic coffee grown from Robusta and Arabica beans, as well as Kopi Luwak coffee collected from the plantation. A true coffee connoisseur is spoilt for choice at the resort and can also experience the whole process of bean to cup with them. If all that fresh mountain air and caffeine means you might feel like some action, worry not there is plenty to do. From playing tennis, badminton or working out at the gym or even opting for horse riding to explore the surroundings, the resort is geared for every kind of wish list. Or one can dive into their amazing infinity pool and surface under clouds that can almost be touched. The views from the infinity pool are panoramic, there is nothing like timing a dip with a spectacular sunset and finishing with a long, cool drink. Perfection indeed!

Main building

Back at the parking lot, I started the Toyota and drove towards Munduk. Along the way, on the section of road that descends to Lake Beratan, I encountered several monkeys that were busy playing or sitting on the pavement and on the railings, looking at passing cars, hoping for some food. The traffic on the road moved extremely slowly, and I finally I reached the end of Lake Beratan and turned left towards Seririt, a town in the north of Bali. While this scenic road of twists and turns right on a ridge usually rewards drivers with amazing views over the two volcanic lakes to the left, Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan – locally called Twin Lakes – it was so hard to follow due to the wall of rain that was falling, which forced me to stop for a break. Because of the heavy torrential rain, the traffic nearly ceased completely and this allowed me to drive the remaining 5 km to one of the most extraordinary places in Bali, Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa – TO BOOK A DISCOUNTED ROOM AT Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa CLICK HERE ! The hotel was literally surrounded by clouds, and the only thing I could see were the gardens and the heated infinity pool, but these were enough to anticipate the natural beauty of north Bali, and the special establishment that is Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa. This eco resort is perched on the northern hills surrounding the village of Munduk and the nearby villages of Kayuputih and Banyuatis. The villa I was allocated was amazing, and the main hotel building had a restaurant and facilities such as a gym, a pool table and a great library of books and magazine, so there was no reason for me to go out anymore, given the inclement weather. I instead took advantage and put a bit of order in my notes and pictures. The hotel restaurant serves local specialties cooked the traditional way with organic, locally-grown ingredients, so when my tummy called for food, I had a great dinner of pumpkin soup with crouton (given the weather) and Tahu Tempe Menyat Nyat, a tasty tempe and tofu stew served with local rice. Delicious. The following morning, after a tasty continental breakfast served with a huge pot of locally grown coffee from the Munduk Moding plantation, I was picked up by Bali Jungle Trekking for a great trek to three of the most beautiful local waterfalls: Golden Valley, Tanah Barak and Melangting. The weather was so nice compared to the day before that I could not believe my luck: sunny, with a nice breeze that kept us cool and relaxed; the only downside was the slippery path, due to the rain that had fallen in the previous two days. The highly appreciated tour can be booked at https://balijungletrekking.com/bali-jungle-hiking/ Upon my return to Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa, as it was still early, I decided to take their nature walk along a path that takes customers through their amazing coffee plantation and organic gardens. The walk was a trek in itself; I took my time and looked carefully at every different plant in their amazing compound, which comprise a strawberry garden, bamboo trees, avocado trees, banana trees, vanilla, pomelo, some astonishing wild orchids and more plants that I have surely missed, given the size of the place. I visited the horses stables, where attendant Putu Apri was feeding the beautiful and gentle animals, and made an encounter with the affable resort GM Mr Gede, who was supervising the building of a new fish pond. Dinner at the hotel restaurant was a fantastic Pesan Be Pasih, a Balinese traditional dish of mixed seafood roasted in banana leaves, which tasted delicious. TO BE CONTINUED… STAY TUNED !

The highly appreciated tour can be booked at https://balijungletrekking.com/bali-jungle-hiking/

Upon my return to Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa, as it was still early, I decided to take their nature walk along a path that takes customers through their amazing coffee plantation and organic gardens.
