During my recent 10-day media trip through Kanchanaburi province, I had the pleasure of visiting Sangkhlaburi, a town nestled on Thailand‘s western frontier. This unique destination, located near the Myanmar border, is a vibrant fusion of Thai and Mon cultures, all set against a backdrop of serene landscapes. Surrounded by lush mountains and the calm waters of the Khao Laem Reservoir, Sangkhlaburi offers travelers a blend of cultural immersion, breathtaking nature, and a rich historical tapestry that captures the spirit of Thailand‘s borderlands. One of the main highlights is the Mon Bridge (Uttamanusorn Bridge), which crosses the Songkaria River. This bridge is not only one of the longest wooden bridges in the world but also a symbol of unity, linking the Mon village with the town center. Walking along the Mon Bridge feels like crossing a symbolic threshold between the Mon and Thai communities, where ancient Mon traditions and Thai influences intertwine in harmony. At night, the area transforms with cool temperatures, a gift of the lake’s humidity and the region’s altitude, creating a refreshingly tranquil setting. Sangkhlaburi is also home to several cultural and historical landmarks. A key attraction is Wat Saam Prasob, also known as the Underwater Temple, which is submerged in Khao Laem Lake and emerges seasonally as water levels fluctuate, giving visitors an evocative glimpse into the past. We decided to take the popular 3 Sunken Temples Boat Tour by traditional longtail boat from one of the guys stationed at the city end of the Mon Bridge who will offer the tour, who charged us 200 thb each. The first temple on the tour was the Wat Somdet, inside which we marvelled at an old Buddha image. This temple is higher up on the hill, so we had to hike a bit to get there. Its edifice walls are partially enveloped in tree roots, which give it a special aura. Next on the list was the submerged old temple of Wat Wang Wiwekaram, which was inundated in 1968 when the Vajiralongkorn Dam was constructed, is revered by the Mon people and has become a tourist attraction known as Sangkhlaburi Underwater Temple. Not much of the temple was above water but we still felt amazed by the sight of it. The new Wat Wang Wiwekaram is located on a high hill and was built under the leadership of the revered Buddhist monk Luang Pho Uttama, whose mummified body is preserved within the temple in a glass coffin. Not far from town is Phutthakhaya Chedi, an impressive golden structure inspired by the Mahabodhi Temple in India, symbolizing the area’s Buddhist heritage. For those interested in exploring further, the Three Pagodas Pass is another noteworthy site. Although the pass itself is closed to foreigners, the surrounding area is home to Mon and Karen communities, offering a chance to experience local crafts and visit traditional villages. Historically, this pass served as a trade route and, according to tradition, was instrumental in spreading Buddhism into Thailand around the 3rd century AD. Sangkhlaburi is a destination that beckons travellers to stay a while—at least two nights are recommended to fully absorb the town’s charm. Evenings come alive with the gentle buzz of night markets, friendly faces, and an unhurried rhythm that invites relaxation. From the iconic Mon Bridge to the historic sites and vibrant local communities, Sangkhlaburi leaves a lasting impression as a truly unique meeting point of cultures, histories, and breathtaking scenery in the heart of Kanchanaburi province. As part of my 10-day media journey through Kanchanaburi, I’m diving into the province’s complex historical and cultural fabric. Kanchanaburi’s story is most famously linked to the harrowing WWII-era construction of the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre, more commonly called the “Death Railway.” Built under Japanese occupation, this 415-kilometre railway aimed to connect Bangkok to Burma (Myanmar) through dense jungle—a project that led to tremendous loss of life. Over 100,000 individuals, including Allied POWs and forced labourers, lost their lives in the gruelling conditions.   Among the key stops in this journey is the Hellfire Pass. This cutting through solid rock was done under extreme conditions and is now preserved as both a memorial and a museum. Here, exhibits include survivor testimonials and photographs, giving a sense of the physical and emotional trials faced by the labourers. Another essential site is the Bridge over the River Kwai. Known worldwide due to the 1957 film of the same name, this bridge has come to symbolise the struggles endured and the resilience displayed during WWII. Each November and December, a festival with lights, sounds, and performances commemorates this legacy, allowing visitors to reflect on the area’s history. Two JEATH War Museums provide further insight into the Death Railway. The first museum, located near the iconic bridge, showcases bamboo huts and other POW memorabilia that recreate conditions of the Allied POW camps. The second JEATH museum, found about five kilometres south of the bridge, is less central but equally rich in historical context. These institutions, along with the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre, emphasise both remembrance and education, with a focus on the importance of peace and the value of human life.   Finally, two war cemeteries, Don Rak and Chungkai, serve as solemn reminders of the cost of this tragic period. Both are maintained respectfully, creating a peaceful place for reflection on the lives lost and the lessons of the past. Kanchanburi Province is located approximately 120 kilometers West of Bangkok and shares a border along the complete length of its western edge with Myanmar (Burma). Kanchanburi town is a very quaint and friendly place with hospitable and amenable people who take pride in their picturesque location. The town has its fair share of inspiring Buddhist temples, lush landscapes, and breathtaking waterfalls alongside captivating mountain scenery. However, Kanchanburi is made more famous (or infamous) by the Kanchanburi Death Railway which is located close by. The Burma Railway – its official name – is a 415 km railway between Bangkok, Thailand and Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar), built during World War II by the Imperial Japanese Army to support its Japanese forces in the Burma campaign. The railway, designed by S.O. No, was estimated to be built and finished in five years. This time frame was not acceptable to the Imperial army, so Prisoners Of War and Asian workers were press-ganged into the construction. It is believed that up to 250,000 in total worked on the construction of the railway line, with 100,000 losing their lives over it. In 1942, Japanese forces invaded Burma from Thailand and seized the colony from British control. To maintain their forces in Burma, the Japanese were required to bring supplies and troops to Burma by sea, through the Strait of Malacca and the Andaman Sea. This route was vulnerable to attack by Allied submarines, and a different means of transport was needed. The obvious alternative was a railway. The Japanese forces started the project in June 1942. They intended to connect Ban Pong in Thailand with Thanbyuzayat in Burma through the Three Pagodas Pass. Construction began at the Thai end on the 22nd of June 1942 and in Burma at roughly the same date. Most of the construction materials, including tracks and sleepers, were brought from dismantled branches of the Federated Malay States Railway network and from the Netherlands East Indies. On 17 October 1943, the two sections of the line met about 18 km (11 miles) south of the Three Pagodas Pass at Konkuita (Kaeng Khoi Tha, Sangkhla Buri district, Kanchanburi Province). Most of the P.O.W.s were then transported to Japan. Those left to maintain the line still suffered from appalling living conditions as well as increasing Allied air raids. The most famous portion of the railway is Bridge 277, ‘the bridge over the River Kwai’, which was built over a stretch of river which was then known as part of the Mae Klong. The association with the ‘River Kwai’ came from the fact that the greater part of the Thai part of the route followed the valley of the Khwae Noi. In 1960, because of a discrepancy between fact and fiction, the part of the Mae Klong that passes under the famous bridge was renamed as the Khwae Yai. This bridge was immortalized by Pierre Boulle in his book and the film based on it, The Bridge on the River Kwai. However, there are many who claim that the movie is utterly unrealistic and does not show what the conditions and treatment of prisoners was actually like. The first wooden bridge over the Khwae Yai was finished in February 1943, followed by a concrete and steel bridge in June 1943. After the war, the railway was in inadequate state to be used for the civil Thai railway system, and needed heavy reconstruction. On 24 June 1949, the first part from Kanchanburi to Nong Pladuk was finished; on 1 April 1952, the next section up to Wang Pho (Wangpo); and finally on 1 July 1958, up to waterfalls. The portion of the railway still in use measures about 130 km (80 miles). Beyond the waterfalls, the line has been abandoned. Steel rails have been removed for reuse in expanding railway yards, reinforcing and rehabilitating railway tracks, and constructing new branch lines. Parts of it have been converted into a walking trail. Since the 1990s various proposals have been made to rebuild the complete railway, but these plans have not yet come to fruition. Since a large part of the original Death Railway line is now submerged under a hydroelectric dam, and the surrounding terrain is mountainous, it would take extensive tunneling to reconnect Thailand with Burma by rail. There are several museums dedicated to those who lost their lives constructing the Kanchanburi Death Railway, the largest of which is at Hellfire Pass (north of the current terminus at Nam Tok), a cutting where the greatest number of lives was lost. There is also an Australian memorial at Hellfire Pass. Two other museums are in Kanchanburi, the Thailand-Burma Railway Museum (opened in March 2003), and the JEATH War Museum. At the Khwae Bridge there is a memorial plaque and a historic locomotive is on display. Now you are all well-informed on Death Railway. Enjoy Kanchanburi!
