For travelers craving a peaceful escape away from crowded beaches and busy tourist spots, Koh Libong in southern Thailand offers a truly authentic and serene experience. Nestled among the islands of the Andaman Sea, south of Krabi, this quiet island combines lush rubber plantations, friendly local communities, and a rare chance to see dugongs in their natural habitat. My recent visit to Koh Libong was driven by curiosity and the desire to discover lesser-known Thai islands that preserve their natural charm. What I found exceeded expectations—a place where slow-paced island life, lush greenery, and the gentle presence of marine mammals create a perfect harmony. How to Reach Koh Libong Koh Libong is the largest island in Trang Province and is easily accessible from the mainland. To reach the island, I drove to Hat Yao, a long beach area, where I boarded a traditional long-tail boat that whisked me across a canal to the island’s pier in about 20 minutes. The boat ride alone was a scenic highlight, offering glimpses of the surrounding mangroves and quiet waters. The island can also be reached by sea from nearby destinations like Koh Lipe and Koh Mook, with daily speedboat services available from various providers. For those traveling from Phuket, connecting via Koh Lipe or Koh Mook makes the journey manageable and enjoyable. Exploring Koh Libong: First Impressions and Local Life Once on the island, we were greeted by a friendly tuk-tuk driver who took us to our accommodation—the Andalay Beach Resort—about 8 kilometers from the pier. Our driver, a young woman named Cartoon, impressed us with her hospitality and clear communication, despite her limited English. She explained that Koh Libong has a predominantly Muslim population, with a small Buddhist minority, mainly immigrants for work and family reasons. Interestingly, the economy here is mainly driven by rubber cultivation—not fishing, as many might assume for an island. The rubber trees stretch in endless groves, their sap tapped daily and collected into coconut shells. Along the way, we saw goats, roosters, hens, and even a monitor lizard crossing the road—living proof of the island’s relaxed, rural vibe. The local community is friendly and welcoming, with signs of tourism slowly emerging—small cafes, homestays, and eco-lodges are sprouting amidst the greenery. Despite the modest development, the island retains its authentic charm. Staying at Andalay Beach Resort Our accommodation, Andalay Beach Resort, offers a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in nature. The resort, recently reopened after a two-year closure, features wooden bungalows and spacious rooms that blend seamlessly into the natural landscape. The furniture is simple yet tasteful, and the atmosphere is peaceful. Dining at the on-site restaurant was a delightful experience—fresh seafood, local flavors, and a front-row seat to the sea. The staff, mostly locals, were professional and friendly, speaking good English, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The resort’s location right on the beach provides direct access to a quiet, sandy shoreline—ideal for relaxing walks and soaking in the sunset. Nature and Wildlife: The Search for Dugongs One of the main reasons for visiting Koh Libong was the hope of spotting dugongs—gentle marine mammals that feed on seagrass beds in the area. We took early morning boat trips to the nearby seagrass meadows, hoping to catch a glimpse of these elusive creatures. While we didn’t see any during our trip, the experience of being on the water in this pristine environment was rewarding in itself. The island’s commitment to sustainable tourism and conservation efforts makes it a promising place for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-travelers. Koh Libong’s environment remains relatively untouched, and locals take pride in preserving their natural surroundings. It’s a destination that encourages responsible tourism—an ideal choice for travelers seeking authentic eco-friendly escapes. Tips for Visiting Koh Libong Timing: The best time to visit is between November and April, during the dry season, when marine activities are more enjoyable. Respect the Environment: Support local conservation efforts, especially if you’re interested in seeing dugongs or exploring marine life. Local Etiquette: With a predominantly Muslim community, dress modestly and be respectful of local customs. Travel Light: The island’s infrastructure is simple; pack essentials, sun protection, and some cash, as ATMs are limited. Explore Nearby Islands: Consider day trips to Koh Mook or Koh Lipe for a broader experience of the region’s natural beauty. Final Thoughts: Why Koh Libong Should Be on Your Thailand Travel List Koh Libong is a rare find—a peaceful island that offers authentic local life, natural beauty, and a genuine connection with Thailand’s marine environment. It’s an ideal destination for eco-conscious travelers, wildlife enthusiasts, or anyone looking to unwind amidst lush greenery and calm waters. This unspoiled corner of Thailand is proof that some of the best experiences come from venturing off the beaten path. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or a chance to see dugongs in the wild, Koh Libong promises a unique and meaningful escape.

Floating in the South China Sea about 160 miles south of Ho Chi Minh City, the Con Dao Islands remain one of Vietnam’s most alluring hidden treasures. This remote archipelago of 16 islands is a place where turquoise waters meet forested mountains, where time seems to slow down, and where travelers can still experience Southeast Asia’s wild, unspoiled beauty. Reaching Con Dao is now easier than ever. A short 45-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines costs around £60 one-way, or you can choose a scenic sea route. The new Superdong fast ferry from Tran De Port in Soc Trang takes just 2 hours and 30 minutes for about £10.50 — a significant upgrade from the long overnight ferry from Vung Tau. Once you arrive, you’ll quickly see why this island chain is often described as Vietnam’s last frontier. A Land of Beauty, History, and Mystery At first glance, Con Son, the largest island, enchants visitors with its jungle-covered hills and curving white beaches. But beneath its serene surface lies a poignant past. For over a century, Con Son was home to a French penal colony and later a U.S. military prison during the Vietnam War. Today, visitors can explore historic prison sites, where many political leaders were once held, offering insight into Vietnam’s turbulent yet resilient history. Yet Con Dao is not defined by its dark past alone — it has transformed into a symbol of renewal. The island’s rich ecosystems are now part of Con Dao National Park, established to protect its marine life, coral reefs, and tropical forests. Nature’s Sanctuary: Sea Turtles and Coral Reefs Con Dao is a paradise for nature lovers. The surrounding waters are home to vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and one of Vietnam’s most important sea turtle nesting sites. Between May and October, green turtles return to lay their eggs on quiet beaches such as Bay Canh and Cau Island. Visitors can join conservation programs that allow them to watch hatchlings make their first journey to the sea — a magical, humbling experience. The park’s well-marked hiking trails lead through mangrove forests and coastal viewpoints where you might spot macaques, giant squirrels, or rare birds like the black giant squirrel. Offshore, snorkeling and diving reveal spectacular marine life — visibility can reach up to 20 meters on clear days. Staying and Exploring in Con Dao Although still relatively undeveloped compared to Phu Quoc or Nha Trang, Con Dao now offers accommodation options for every traveler. Luxury seekers can stay at the renowned Six Senses Con Dao, a world-class eco-resort that seamlessly blends sustainability with sophistication. Mid-range hotels and local homestays near Con Son town offer friendly service and a glimpse into everyday island life. Motorbikes are the best way to explore the island at your own pace. Winding roads hug the coastline, leading to hidden coves like Dam Trau Beach — one of Vietnam’s most beautiful — and small fishing villages where life remains simple and peaceful. Why Visit Con Dao Now With its rare blend of natural beauty, fascinating history, and minimal crowds, Con Dao is a destination that feels both remote and rewarding. It’s an island escape for those seeking tranquility, authenticity, and connection with nature — before mass tourism inevitably arrives. If you’re planning your next Vietnam adventure, make sure to include Con Dao on your itinerary. Learn more about the archipelago, local conservation projects, and how to get there on the Vietnam Tourism official website. Con Dao may be off the beaten path, but for travelers chasing genuine beauty and calm, this untouched paradise is worth every mile.

ÀNI Thailand nested in lush gardens with captivating views of Phang Nga Bay, is located at a jewel-like, exclusive beach gateway on the east coast of Koh Yao Noi Island. Situated equidistant from Phuket to the west and the mainland Krabi to the east, ÀNI Thailand can be reached in 35 minutes by speedboat from either of these islands. Signifying ‘Little Lengthy Island’, Koh Yao Noi is described by abandoned seashores, safeguarded mangroves, beautiful rice paddies, and a verdant interior. Fishing towns and ranches dab the generally uninhabited, 19-square-mile (50-sq.km) island, famous for its easygoing speed of life and warm Southern Thai culture. Accommodating up to 20 guests, ÀNI Thailand features a large main swimming pool, many living and dining facilities, and an experienced team of 22 to curate every detail of an all-inclusive ÀNI experience. There are no hidden costs or price lists where the stay has already included everything you need, from every personalised meal and spa treatment, to tailored excursions and kids’ activities. ÀNI Thailand aims to provide guests with a sense of family and home by delivering warmth and unparalleled generosity, pure relaxation and time and space for them to focus on what is important to them. Following the growing demand for luxury that has a purpose and a sincere desire to seek out real and unique travel experiences. We are pleased to present a few of ÀNI Thailand‘s carefully selected experiences that connect guests with colourful residents and provide enlightening glimpses into the tiny island’s way of life, character, and philosophy. Breakfast in the paddy fields Guests will have the opportunity to ride in a stylish motorcycle sidecar to reach “The Noodle Shop,” a highly-regarded rice paddy field restaurant popular among locals of all ages. A Thai breakfast of egg-and-crab fried rice, exotic fruit, and sticky rice can be savoured in this charming setting. Sukanya and Chalothorn Hapolkla, the restaurant’s young, married proprietors who go by the names Ja Yam and Bang Mee, provide warm hospitality and encourage guests to indulge in their freshly prepared rice noodles. They also offer insights into the various rice varieties grown in the surrounding paddy fields and sold in Koh Yao Noi town, including Jasmine, Suphan and Pathum, sticky rice, riceberry, and low-GI RD43. The serene scene of buffalo grazing in the distance and cranes keeping watch adds to the restaurant’s tranquil ambiance. The Rubber Plantation Guests can explore the island while riding in ÀNI Thailand‘s tuk-tuk, in search of a secluded rubber plantation. Guests will have the chance to meet Mah, a 62-year-old woman who owns a sprawling five-acre plot of rubber trees. Mah has 350 trees to tap each day to release the latex, which is then collected and dried to yield rubber. Her family has owned and operated the plantation for generations, and she takes great pride in demonstrating the process of tapping the trees to the guests. Additionally, Mah is an enterprising individual, who also owns a mini-mart and sells petrol. This is an excellent opportunity for guests to recall their geography lessons from earlier years and to gain a deeper understanding of how rubber is produced for tires and other everyday items in the Western world. Koh Yao Noi Town Centre Koh Yao Noi is a quaint town with a bustling atmosphere, reminiscent of a charming village. Guests can spend a few hours exploring the town center, making new feline friends, sampling various beverages, and purchasing vibrant souvenirs from the many market stalls. The locals are extremely welcoming and are delighted to share information about their delectable offerings, including a variety of sticky rice pouches. They are also happy to discuss their home-made, bio-organic fertilizer and the process of producing it using water, eggs, and fish sauce. Guests will appreciate the fruits of their labor when they sample the tiny finger bananas, which are incredibly sweet and flawless. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these homegrown heroes. Batik Lessons Guests can learn the intricate art of batik painting with the skilled local ladies of the island, led by Ms. Sapiyah Yusoh, affectionately known as Ja Cha, and her colleague to share their 20 years of knowledge and expertise at ÀNI Thailand. After showcasing their own stunning creations that adorn the space, they will encourage guests to pick up a pencil and sketch their own design. The drawing is then outlined with hot wax, requiring a steady hand and precision. Finally, guests can add color by selecting from a range of hues that can be blended to bring the batik to life. This painting process is highly meditative and creative, with a serene atmosphere in the room as guests work on their individual creations with encouragement from one another. Fish Conservation Nursery The fish conservation center is the heart and soul of Koh Yao Noi, dedicated to preserving the marine ecosystem. Guests are transported by long-tail boats to the bay, where they will spend an hour or so with the nursery’s team to learn about their goals. Owner Kasem Ninsamut and his son, Chaowarin, also known as Chao, collaborate closely with local fishermen to safeguard their livelihood. The nursery has four primary objectives: breeding for sustainability to prevent overfishing; breeding for conservation, where even crabs carrying eggs caught by fishermen are brought to the nursery until the eggs have hatched, and the mothers are released back into the wild; conservation efforts to care for injured fish; and education for the future generation of fishermen, explaining which species require protection and cannot be caught.

A Thai breakfast of egg-and-crab fried rice, exotic fruit, and sticky rice can be savoured in this charming setting.

The fish conservation center is the heart and soul of Koh Yao Noi, dedicated to preserving the marine ecosystem.

Are you looking for a tropical paradise? Do you want to see something more of this enjoyable region washed by the Andaman Sea? Do you want to merge with the beautiful sceneries of white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, lush jungles and vibrant resorts? And above all, do you want to get away from the logic of mass tourism that characterises Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and Krabi? Perfect, you are in the right website, the one that takes you to visit Southern Thailand and gets you to know a series of beautiful, little-known and little-explored islands. Let me be clear: do not expect deserted islands. You can though certainly expect places where you will hardly find annoying masses of tourists, where you can find decent hotels equipped with the right comforts and where, perhaps, there is an attempt to generate a form of sustainable tourism. Enough said. Follow us now along this enchanting journey which, starting from the island of Koh Lanta, just south of Krabi, takes us all the way to Koh Lipe, a short distance from the Malaysian border. An itinerary particularly suitable for those who want to explore beaches that will enchant you with their beauty and that will leave an indelible desire in your heart to come back in your next vacation to see for yourself all that the Andaman Sea has to offer you. So, let’s get ready to tackle this itinerary, one that develops through three Thai coastal provinces: Krabi, Trang and Satun. Koh Lanta – (Krabi province) This is the first stop of our tour. It is an island of remarkable beauty off the coast of the Krabi province where visitors can stay in hotels of various categories that often overlook the white, long beaches of the island. The island of Koh Lanta is already a well-known destination and there are several tourists who reach it, scattering along its entire coast. Many are the activities that can be practiced in Koh Lanta: snorkelling, kayaking and excursions to nearby and equally enchanting islands can easily be organised. And of course sunbathing, relaxing on the beach and swimming a short distance from the shoreline, where you can ‘soak in’ as if there were no tomorrow. These are the basis of those ‘non-activities’ that you can practice on any of the islands we will descrive. In Koh Lanta there is no shortage of restaurants serving delicious Thai dishes as well as international cuisine. Most of them are located on the beach, so not only will you not go hungry during your stay, but you can also satisfy your appetite for a panoramic view of the ocean. Koh Ngai – (Krabi province) Koh Ngai is an Andaman Sea island located off the coast of Thailand. It is a paradise framed by splendid beaches of white sand and by waters so transparent that they look like panes of glass. It is the right place for those who want to get away from it all, who are not afraid of boredom and who feel good about themselves, perhaps not disdaining simply relaxing on a deck chair with a book in hand. Koh Ngai’s luxuriant tropical vegetation, among other things, offers adequate shelter from the scorching sun during the hot hours of the day. Next, add up the usual activities such as canoeing, fishing, snorkelling and even diving to access those spectacular coral reefs that make up much of the seascape surrounding the island, easily reachable by local boats. One of the main attractions of Koh Ngai is the abundance of wildlife, including monkeys, monitor lizards and colourful birds that can be seen almost everywhere on this small paradise island. Not enough? Then let me tell you that on Koh Ngai you will find little of everything (or none), though some shops can be found on nearby islands. Koh Ngai is the perfect place for fantasising. Just walk away from your hotel, close your eyes and imagine being on a desert island. Dream, and reach the night time, leaving worries aside and abandoning yourself to a deep and restful sleep. Koh Kradan and Koh Mook – (Trang province) The only difference between Koh Ngai and these two islands is that they are located in different provinces. Apart from this, everything said for the previous island also stands for the latter two. We can only add that Koh Kradan has a remarkable snorkelling site that can be easily reached by swimming from the shore, and that on Koh Mook you can visit the splendid and unmissable Emerald Cave, through which you access a hidden lagoon that will leave you breathless. Seeing is believing. Last but not least, Koh Mook, being larger than the others, has a greater number of tourist structures and a village, where you can find local shops and restaurants. Koh Libong – (Trang province) This is another must-see destination when visiting the southern region of Thailand. This tranquil island offers visitors the chance to experience traditional Thai culture, with local villages filled with friendly people who will welcome you with open arms and traditional smiles. Here you can practice numerous activities, including trekking in the lush jungle and boat trips to surrounding islands or, alternatively, among the mangroves, looking for wild animals. Koh Libong is truly a unique place we will talk about in more details in the future. Koh Bulon – (Satun province) I last visited the island of Koh Bulon about ten years ago. I was headed to Koh Lipe, but in the end I couldn’t resist Koh Bulon sea, its beaches, its tranquility and the cuisine of Gianluca, a friend who had a restaurant on that island: the Panka Noi Pizza, open from November to the beginning April. Well, after ten years who knows how this Koh Bulon will have developed, you will say. It is legitimate to wonder, though I assure you that Koh Bulon has not had the growth that much better-known Koh Lipe, our next stop, has had. As a...

A glimpse of Koh Lanta National Park

Koh Lanta – (Krabi province)

Koh Lanta National Park

This is the first stop of our tour.

Koh Lanta has its own merit-making corner

And of course sunbathing, relaxing on the beach and swimming a short distance from the shoreline, where you can ‘soak in’ as if there were no tomorrow.

These are the basis of those ‘non-activities’ that you can practice on any of the islands we will descrive.

In Koh Lanta there is no shortage of restaurants serving delicious Thai dishes as well as international cuisine. Most of them are located on the beach, so not only will you not go hungry during your stay, but you can also satisfy your appetite for a panoramic view of the ocean.

Koh Ngai – (Krabi province)

A corner of Koh Ngai beach

Koh Ngai is an Andaman Sea island located off the coast of Thailand.

Koh Mook lifestyle… easy

One of the main attractions of Koh Ngai is the abundance of wildlife, including monkeys, monitor lizards and colourful birds that can be seen almost everywhere on this small paradise island.

Not enough? Then let me tell you that on Koh Ngai you will find little of everything (or none), though some shops can be found on nearby islands. Koh Ngai is the perfect place for fantasising. Just walk away from your hotel, close your eyes and imagine being on a desert island. Dream, and reach the night time, leaving worries aside and abandoning yourself to a deep and restful sleep.

Koh Kradan and Koh Mook – (Trang province)

Relax in Koh Kradan

The only difference between Koh Ngai and these two islands is that they are located in different provinces.

Koh Libong – (Trang province)

This is another must-see destination when visiting the southern region of Thailand.

Koh Bulon – (Satun province)

Sunset over Koh Bulon

I last visited the island of Koh Bulon about ten years ago.

As a result, Koh Bulon has maintained a good part of the beauty of the past.

But if you insist, I will travel back to the island soon, and I will let you know more about it as soon as possible. What I do know is that Gianluca is always there with his restaurant so I’m also sure I’ll be adequately fed… Rather, if you happen to be in Koh Bulon, go find him: it’s worth it.

Koh Lipe – (Satun province)

Koh Lipe dream beach

And finally here we are at the end of our journey. We are in the Koh Tarutao Marine National Park, where the island of Lipe is located. This is undoubtedly the best known destination of Southern Thailand, an idyllic paradise that is slowly becoming a ‘lost paradise’ with once pristine beaches that now attract ever greater numbers of tourists.

Given our initial comments on mass tourism, perhaps Koh Lipe should be dropped from this list of ours. However, I believe that this island should be forcibly inserted into a southern islands itinerary because, despite everything, it remains, in my honest opinion, an amazing place. I would say that Koh Lipe should be awarded an ‘ad honorem green card’.

Koh Lipe‘s fame is also supported by the beauty of the surrounding islands, great destinations for day trips, and by the coral gardens that surround it, rich in marine life and a natural paradise for those who intend to snorkel or dive.

In all these years of growth, Koh Lipe has also developed a lively nightlife made up of bars, restaurants and clubs where you can have a drink and listen to music. In short, there is something for all tastes on the island. As you can see, there is no shortage of choice and I assure you that we are talking about quality places.

How to reach the islands

At this point the last thing to tell you is how to reach these islands which, although off the beaten track, are well connected to each other, to the mainland and to the main tourist centres.

Sea sand palms and rest

Scheduled speedboats connect Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and Krabi with each of these islands. Certainly some distances can be long and perhaps not very suitable for those suffering from back pain or seasickness, but in this case there are alternative solutions.

You can travel by car or minivan, privately or by public transport, the latter obviously cheaper, until you reach one of the ports of embarkation closest to your chosen islands. From there, a traditional ‘longtail boat’ carries you to your destination.

Should you arrive from further afield, for example Bangkok, you can fly to one of the three International airports close to the above islands: Krabi, Trang and Hat Yai.

And for those who have the time and the wish, you could hop on a catamaran cruise which touches each of the destinations described, and perhaps some other pearl of the Andaman where you can have an intermediate stops. In short, even in this case there is no shortage of solutions, the choice is yours.

Ko Sichang is a small island situated in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Sichang makes a nice weekend outing for local tourists. Its beaches are as enjoyable as those on islands further east and south, such as Koh Samet. The royal residence was abandoned in 1893 when the French occupied the island during a conflict with Thailand over who would control Laos. The island also has many places of religious interest and value. What to do in Koh Sichang San Jao Phaw Khao Yai Located northeast of the piers this venerable multi-level Chinese temple is up a high on a cliff and has a spectacular view back toward the mainland. The temple has many rooms and caves to be explored. To the right, just before entering the main hall, you will see stairs leading up to Buddha‘s footprint. Buddha’s Footprint and Lookout Accessible from the main road, or from San Jao Phaw Khao Yai, this lookout offers amazing views of both the island and the small lake known as Buddha‘s Footprint. The lookout has a shrine and a bell. If you wish to notify the spirits that you are visiting, you may ring the bell three times. Wat Tham Yai Prik This large temple on the hill includes a giant golden Buddha visible from the ferry, as well as many other Buddha statues. The temple has a great view, caves, and many buildings to explore. The local monks will be happy to show you around and offer a blessing for a modest donation. Rama IV Summer Palace and Gardens Located half-way down the east coast are the remains of this 19th century palace. You can spend an hour or two wandering around the old buildings, gardens, the pier, and the small beaches. Taam Pang Beach The only real beach on the island offers nice swimming and good snacks. Beware of rubbish which can find its way onto the beach when the tide comes in. What to see in Koh Sichang Sunsets The island offers beautiful sunsets seen off Taam Pang Beach or Chom Kao Kard. The latter location has a nice walkway, benches and gazebos built onto a hill, all offering great sunset views for free. The walk from the road to the lookout point is quite nice. Caves Of interest is the large cave known as Tham Saowapha which is said to extend over a kilometre into the limestone interior of the island. Another cave, the chimney-like Tham Chaprakong gives access to the view from the top of the hill. Other caves on the island are home to meditating hermits, so visitors should take care not to cause any disturbance. Many of the temples on the island also have caves used for worship which can be explored as long as you are being respectful. Getting to Koh Sichang By Bus You can catch a bus from Bangkok‘s Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) or Eastern Bus Terminal (Ekamai). Both stations have buses that leave everyday, on the hour. The trip to Sri Racha takes about 2 hours. At Mo Chit proceed to window 54 to purchase your ticket. Minibuses from Ekamai to Sri Racha run hourly. The fare is 130฿. By Boat Upon arrival in Sri Racha, take a tuk-tuk for 50 baht to the pier. Boats to Koh Sichang leave hourly (or every two hours in low season) from the pier on Koh Loy. The ferry takes about 40 minutes and is 50 baht per person each way. The information counter at the pier in Koh Sichang provides necessary information and a brochure carrying the information of five important locations of the island written in Thai and English. This counter may not be open in low season. When leaving the island be careful. The ferry may leave from a different pier than you came on. It’s best to ask a local motorbike taxi driver when you are close to the piers. Get around Koh Sichang By Tuk-tuk Motorcycle buffs will be intrigued by the strange motorcycle samlors peculiar to Ko Sichang, three wheeled motorised rickshaws with outrageously powerful automobile or motorcycle engines. These once roamed the streets of Bangkok but were banished to Sri Racha years ago. They can be hired for about 60 baht an hour to take visitors on a tour of the island. For group of tourists, one day around the island transport package can be arranged at the pier. The charge for the three-wheeled motorised tuk-tuk, which can accommodate 5 persons, is around 250 baht, and for the pick-up truck, which can accommodate 10 persons, is around 500 baht. Tourists can spend their own time at each location, and the pick-up time to the next location has to be discussed beforehand (as you get off at the location) or you can call the driver’s mobile phone when finished at a spot. By Motorcycle By far the most popular to get around the island is by renting a motorcycle, usually priced at around 300 baht/day. While there are a few steep hills, the island is easily navigated by a novice motorcycle driver. Motorcycles can be rented at the pier, or at many guest houses or rental facilities along the main road By Foot For visitors who have more time or want to see the island at a slower pace, the island is easily navigated by foot. All of the island’s main attractions can be seen in one day, and you can get pretty much anywhere on the island in less than an hour.

By Tuk-tuk

Motorcycle buffs will be intrigued by the strange motorcycle samlors peculiar to Ko Sichang, three wheeled motorised rickshaws with outrageously powerful automobile or motorcycle engines. These once roamed the streets of Bangkok but were banished to Sri Racha years ago. They can be hired for about 60 baht an hour to take visitors on a tour of the island.

Koh SIchang small map

For group of tourists, one day around the island transport package can be arranged at the pier. The charge for the three-wheeled motorised tuk-tuk, which can accommodate 5 persons, is around 250 baht, and for the pick-up truck, which can accommodate 10 persons, is around 500 baht. Tourists can spend their own time at each location, and the pick-up time to the next location has to be discussed beforehand (as you get off at the location) or you can call the driver’s mobile phone when finished at a spot.

By Motorcycle

By far the most popular to get around the island is by renting a motorcycle, usually priced at around 300 baht/day. While there are a few steep hills, the island is easily navigated by a novice motorcycle driver. Motorcycles can be rented at the pier, or at many guest houses or rental facilities along the main road

By Foot

For visitors who have more time or want to see the island at a slower pace, the island is easily navigated by foot. All of the island’s main attractions can be seen in one day, and you can get pretty much anywhere on the island in less than an hour.

Last week I got the opportunity to visit amazing Langkawi, a beautiful island well-known not only in Malaysia by quite popular in neighbouring countries such like Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. I can tell you that I was totally amazed by the beautiful natural scenery offered by the island brochure, especially the mountains and the beaches. I know all too well that the Dayaki believe it is not good to visit the sea, a beach or even a mountain towards the end of a year. Perhaps it had something to do with the magic of the raining season, or with my curiosity behind some local myth, but when I thought of my imminent trip to Langkawi I couldn’t stop myself dreaming about snorkeling in the sea, walking along the beach and feeling the cool breeze in the top of mountains. DAY 1 So, with that dreams in mind I booked a last minute deal to the island together with a few close friends. I’m from Kuching, so all I had to do was booking an airplane ticket to Penang, where I joined my adventure friends for the trip by sedan car to Kuala Kedah Jetty to take the ferry to Langkawi. The car journey took only around 1 hour and half, and the ferry cost us a fair 24 ringgit per ticket. Arrived at Langkawi, the first thing my friends and I did was looking for a car to rent. We had heard that some car renters at the jetty are not licensed, so we decided to hop on a taxi and went directly to an agent in an office not far from the Dataran Lang (Eagle Square). The gentleman there offered us a Toyota Avanza for 100 Ringgit per day, a price we found quite reasonable and affordable for a group of tourists like us. From there we drove to a nearby town named Pekan Kuah where Amara Guesthouse is located. The rooms were clean and affordable at 90-ringgit per night, and equipped with air-con, WiFi, hot water and a king size bed. See them on Facebook: Amara-Guest-House-Langkawi. After checking in and dropping our stuff in the rooms, it was time to go for some shopping: liquor, chocolate and other snacks; I must say Langkawi is a paradise for those who love chocolate, liquor and tobacco since Langkawi is a duty free area (the only item I do not advise buying there are perfumes, more expensive than on the mainland for some reason). After a tiring and intensive shopping like that, we were in need of food to refill the lost energy. If you are keen to eat spicy Malay food, Pekan Kuah roadside area is the best: it not only serves delicious dishes, but also at prices affordable to travellers. From Pekan Kuah we drove on to the Dataran Lang (Eagle Square), located near the seaside, to capture few pictures for the memory album. The drive to the Underwater World Langkawi in Pantai Cenang took about 30 minutes, and it was sure worth it: there you can see almost all sort of species, some not native to our country like the penguin, such a great and cute animal. Sharks gave me a similar impression: scary but amazing to watch. I even saw a jellyfish, which I had never seen in my life! So pretty! The 30 Ringgit ticket was a real bargain! Find out more at http://www.underwaterworldlangkawi.com.my/location.html And as the day got darker, we ate and went to rest, planning an exciting next day in amazing Langkawi. DAY 2 The day after I checked my wish list and wished the weather would be on my side: no rain please! We drove to Pantai Kok, on the foothill of the Machincang Mountain, part of a mountain range formed 450 millions years ago, where the cable car station is located. My friends and I paid the 20 Ringgit ticket and entered the SkyDome where we watched some videos before being guided to our car. The views along the trip to the top are simply amazing, more so as the cable car gets higher, but let me tell you it can be scary too! The whole experience is exhilarating, and the view are just complete, with sea, mountains, flora and fauna that can be seen at once. I took so many pictures as a memory of my travels to amazing Langkawi, and made friends with a nice couple from Germany who shared with me their enjoyment and amusement on a fantastic Malaysian experience. The journey from the base to the top station, where the SkyBridge is located, covers 2,200 meters and takes visitors to an elevation of 700m above sea level in about 15 minutes. From there you will be able to enjoy commanding views over Langkawi’s western sea coast, the town and the staggering rock blocks and pinnacles. Find more information on http://www.panoramalangkawi.com From Langkawi cable car, we moved on to Telaga Air Tujuh, a fantastic seven-tiered waterfall; it took us only 30 minutes of hiking to get to the top, perfect for those who love a bit of exercise. Time was indeed limited, and it is a shame that we could not visit more places; we had to even skip a visit to Pulau Dayang Bunting for snorkeling and swimming. Before leaving Langkawi, I did the usual shopping for the family: fridge magnets, t-shirts and keychains to take back to family and friends in Sarawak. That’s all I can share about this Langkawi trip. Traveling and travel memories are for me priceless, notes and testimonials I can record for future generations, to motivate them to travel. So, what you waiting for? Plan the trip, grab your luggage and visit amazing Langkawi!
