DidaTravel – a tech-driven global travel distribution company – has shared key hotel booking trends from China’s Golden Week holiday period.

China’s outbound travel continues its rapid recovery, with hotel bookings for trips abroad showing impressive growth. According to DidaTravel’s latest data, during the Golden Week holiday, when many Chinese travelers take a seven-day break from October 1 to October 7, hotel bookings surged across various regions compared to last year: up by 190% in the Americas, 78% in Europe, 77% in Asia-Pacific, and 106% in the Middle East. 

The average hotel stay duration for international travelers remained stable at around two nights, consistent with pre-pandemic trends. While Average Daily Rates (ADR) showed a slight increase in the Middle East, they were marginally lower in other regions compared to last year.

As of October 8, the top 20 most popular international destinations for Chinese travelers during the Golden Week holiday were Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, Italy, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, Turkey, Iceland, the Philippines, and New Zealand. 

Among international cities, the most booked destinations were Bangkok, Tokyo, Singapore, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Pattaya, Kyoto, Kota Kinabalu, Jeju, Karon, Dubai, Paris, Patong, Phuket, Abu Dhabi, Chiang Mai, Rome, Milan, and London. For domestic travel, top destinations included Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Macau. These destinations provide a wide variety of experiences, ranging from breathtaking natural landscapes to vibrant cultural heritage, world-class events, gourmet dining, and exceptional shopping.

Since its opening five years ago, Shanghai’s most pioneering resort, Amanyangyun has demonstrated how – through a culmination of an ambitious feat of architectural and ecological conservation – Chinese culture can be preserved and still enjoyed today. Set on the edge of the city and breathing new life into history, the property has served as a sanctuary in which to celebrate the country’s heritage but also a place to find balance between the modern-day allure of Shanghai and the peace of the natural world. To mark its five-year milestone, a series of new events themed around the five senses will take place throughout the coming months.

At the beginning of the 21^st century, the construction of Liao Fang Reservoir in Jiangxi Province proposed significant risk to the area’s ancient Ming and Qing Dynasty houses and the surrounding camphor tree forest. In a bid to preserve nature and this significant piece of cultural heritage, a migration project began, transporting the historic courtyard and the trees 700-kilometres to the outskirts of downtown Shanghai. After over a decade of careful relocation and restoration, on 28 April 2018, the grand opening of Amanyangyun marked their reemergence as the resort’s very own Ming and Qing Dynasty Villas. Set around a resplendent central lake and surrounded by forest gardens, Amanyangyun presented a rural refuge unlike anything ever seen before in the city.

Having appeared in the Shanghai Michelin Guide since opening in 2018, Arva – Aman’s homage to Italian culinary tradition – draws inspiration from  farm-to-table tradition with signature dishes and sharing plates served in a warm and convivial atmosphere. Coinciding with Arva at Amanyangyun’s five-year anniversary, Aman Tokyo’s executive chef, Masakazu Hiraki, will visit the resort from Japan to host a Four Hands Dinner in collaboration with Nicola Frizzale, the resort’s own executive chef.

Born and raised in Japan, Hiraki attended the renowned Tsuji Culinary Institute before moving to Italy in 1999 to gain first-hand knowledge of the country’s cuisine. In 2016, after 17 years in Italy, he returned to Japan and joined the Arva team at Aman Tokyo. While demonstrating his knowledge of Italian cuisine, Hiraki also showcases his Japanese heritage through his culinary creations. Visiting the hotel from 16-18 June, Hiraki will work together with Frizzale, who joined Amanyangyun in 2021, to present a seven-course dinner – a journey through Italy’s culinary heritage. Served at Arva from 6-10pm, the menu will include delicious dishes and Italian favourites such as Carpaccio Di Gamberi and Risotto Al Funghi.

Four Hands Afternoon Tea at the Bar

Surrounded by lush camphor trees, Amanyangyun’s Bar is an elegant and relaxing space which has become renowned over the past five years for its exquisite afternoon tea serving visitors and locals alike.. To celebrate the resort’s anniversary, indulge in an exclusive afternoon tea experience – a collaboration between Aman Kyoto’s pastry chef Hiroyuki Matsuo and Amanyayngun pastry chef Norah Zhou. The chefs will create an afternoon tea that appeals to all the senses. A celebration of pattern, texture and colour, the experience will be available from 2-5pm on 16, 17 and 18 June, and include indulgent treats such as Brown Sugar Pancakes, Pistachio Raspberry Bavarian Cream Cake and Cranberry Scones.

Chef Matsuo started his career as a confectioner in Osaka in 1984 and has won numerous awards for his original creations including the Osaka Governor’s Award. Working together with Norah – a member of the Gourmet Committee of the Chinese Cuisine Association and silver medal winner in the chocolate showcase of the 9th FHC China International Culinary Arts Competition.

“Laos doesn’t seem to have changed at all since I last visited. (…) Life flows according to the usual rhythms, the rhythms of a peasant life punctuated by nature and made up of days that are almost all the same: at dawn, small groups of people lined up along the road reach the plantations; in the local markets, made up of simple goods and lots of fruit, there is slow activity, people meet, talk, buy, sell. Outside some shack used as a shop, the young and the old spend their days idly by watching the traffic go by and chatting with each other while children, like all children in the world, play and run, still partly carefree, waiting for their time to help in the fields.”

I wrote this in 2013 when I was a few kilometres away from Bo Ten – a then forgotten town on the border with China – and I was about to cross the north of the country to reach China. Today, I’m preparing to make a very similar journey again, but I have serious doubts about being able to repeat those words and rediscover that almost enchanted country that had bewitched me every time I returned to visit it.

Read on to find out why. For now it is enough for you to know that the characters and performers are the same as 10 years ago: China in version 100.0, in the role of a local feudal lord who seeks to derive the greatest possible advantages from his vassals; Laos which, to continue the terminology of computers, I would still define in the “beta” version, wearing the clothes of a vassal; and then there’s me, the storyteller.

Perhaps speaking of an end is a bit exaggerated in absolute terms; maybe it is more appropriate to speak of a decline, and I have the clear feeling that my next trip to Laos, which should take place in the coming April, could bear witness to the beginning of the decline of a nation that has always had little but that has always tried to keep its identity intact with extreme dignity.

Laos has a population of about 7 and a half million inhabitants, distributed among forty-seven different ethnic minorities, with a majority formed by the Lao ethnic group. Each of these groups has its own language and culture. Laos is home to some of the most pristine regions in the world, made up of lush forests, towering mountains and, above all, by the meandering Mekong River, which divides into an internal estuary that gives life to an infinite number of islands and islets in the southern part of the country and which, above all, has represented over the years the most important commercial communication route in the country.

To the traveler who visits it, Laos offers paths between nature, spirituality and silence. A place more to breathe than to admire. Many times I have asked myself: “What is it that I find beautiful in Laos?” Perhaps it’s the ancient temples of Luang Prabang with the morning alms of the monks, or the lively life on the ‘long Mekong’? Or perhaps it’s the mysterious jars lying on the Xiangkhoang plateau, which alongside the legends associated with the jars themselves, has also seen history pass along its paths; a story made up of thousands of tons of bombs dropped during what the Americans themselves defined a ‘dirty war’? Or maybe it’s the waterfalls, the sunsets with the last rays of the sun caressing the rice fields, the waters of the Mekong that are placid one moment, rushing the next?

Perhaps it’s all these and other things put together. And maybe none of them, because in fact Laos doesn’t have its Angkor, its Walls, its Taj Mahal; but you don’t miss them, and you come back for its people, for its simplicity, for that atmosphere that Asia exudes from all pores.

Planning a trip to Laos is an exciting prospect and, with so many interesting places to visit, it can be said that travel begins in preparation. In this specific case I will follow a fairly classic route with the four of the most popular destinations in Laos – Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Plain of Jars and Luang Prabang – to which I will add Bo Ten again.

In short, like a murderer, I too will go back to the places of the crime to see if I will find the same Laos as many years ago. Will I find it again? Frankly I hope so, but I’m afraid not, and I’ll explain why right away: on December 3rd 2021, a high-speed railway was inaugurated, one that connects Vientiane with Bo Ten in a few hours, to then connect with a Chinese railway that will reach Kunming.

This ultra-modern project which has taken the name of ‘New Silk Road’ and which over time intends to extend to connect with the Kuala Lumpur–Singapore railway line with the aim of opening a new commercial route between China and the major ports of Southeast Asia, will surely have begun to produce an epochal change in a Laos that seems to be passing, at least in some areas of the country, from nothing to so much all too rapidly.

And it is precisely this Laos in the making that I want to go visit. It intrigues me to personally see how such a particular country is absorbing this path from a peasant economy, as it has been said several times, to a much more complex economic phase.

Simple life in Laos

As in the American Far West, the railway will bring progress, work, perhaps a decrease in the level of poverty, economic and social growth. It has already led, for example, to the clearing of unexploded ordnance left over from indiscriminate bombing during the Vietnam War, which was located along the route and which was removed during the execution of the works.

But there will also be a price to pay.

In America it was paid for with the disappearance of the bison and with the inability, or more probably with the unwillingness, to accompany the indigenous populations towards a different form of life adapted to the new times. In Laos, where 75 tunnels and a number of viaducts divided into 167 bridges had to be built, the environmental impact was evidently harmful and resulted in the loss of 318,000 hectares of natural forest. Not to mention that even in Laos the population will need to be supported in this rapid change in their daily life.

While it should be acknowledged that the new rail link has the potential to stimulate the economy of landlocked Laos, ultimately resulting in the country being part of a pan-Asian rail link which can only bring benefits, there are also concerns that this situation will increase the country’s indebtedness to China.

Laos will increasingly rely on international aid and financial assistance from the Beijing government, and Vientiane will be drawn further politically into the orbit of its unwieldy neighbour.

In short, a Laos to discover, to experience and to understand in the few days that I will have time to visit it. I am quite sure that once again, the sides of the rails will show me its most beautiful face. Maybe even the surprised faces of the people when they see that iron monster that could change their lives darting along the edge of their fields. A turning point, in short, which in the end we hope will be for the better.

The House Collective by Swire Hotels, a group of refined, highly individual hotels in Asia, has launched the 2021 edition of its biennial art programme, ‘Encounters Across Cultures,’ which celebrates the immeasurable creativity that comes through multicultural collaboration. The House Collective–comprising The Opposite House in Beijing, The Upper House in Hong Kong, The Temple House in Chengdu, and The Middle House in Shanghai–has invited artists from around the world to come together to create and explore the concept of space and movement. Following over a year of restrictions and lockdowns, the  desire  to  collaborate and create across cultures in a meaningful way was an inspiring force behind this programme. The 2021 edition, which has been almost two years in the making, celebrates that sense of togetherness across borders that we have all been so deeply craving.

An encounter between dance and architecture – 2021 edition

The theme of this year’s programme will be realized through interactive video installations that– coupled with varying styles of dance movements–will complement the work of the esteemed architects behind each House. The installations will encourage viewers to appreciate the spaces they spend time in and even find new ways to experience them. Following last year’s unexpected lockdowns–and the heightened impact that space and architectural design has had on our emotions–these installations will bring to life a timely sentiment that breaks  the  barriers  of languages and borders.

The second chapter will take place at The Upper House in Hong Kong and then move to The Temple House in Chengdu. This chapter will seek to highlight the distinctly different architectural styles of The Upper House (which epitomises André Fu’s sense of understated luxury) and The Temple House (which blends Qing dynasty structures with contemporary design) through the contrasting styles of ballet and hip hop. As a way to showcase the different energies and personalities between the two cities, Ballerina, Hennes Yuen from the Hong Kong Ballet and Hip-Hop dancer, Wan Siming from Chengdu will weave together their unique disciplines of dance. Directed by Leo Liu with choreographed movements by Yuh Egami (of the Hong Kong Ballet) and Andrea Carrucciu (who played MacBeth in the show Sleep No More), Ballerina Yuen leads the audience through the serene sanctuary above the city that is The Upper House – while hip- hop dancer Wan Siming channels the young creative energy of the city’s hip-hop culture through the contemporary design aesthetic of The Temple House. Through the video installation, the audience will experience the dancers embracing their differences and creating harmony with each other.
