Raffles Hotel Le Royal, one of Southeast Asia’s most renowned luxury heritage hotels located in Phnom Penh, is marking its 96th anniversary this month with a charity gala and the launch of a new art exhibition spotlighting talented young Cambodian artists. The hotel will host a charity gala dinner and art auction on Friday, Nov. 24 at its award-winning Restaurant Le Royal. The evening will feature a three-course gourmet dinner with fine wines, accompanied by a live auction of artworks created by the children of Sunrise Cambodia, a local non-profit charitable organisation. All proceeds from the dinner and auction will directly support the care and education of underprivileged children through Sunrise Cambodia’s various programs. Tickets are priced at $96 for two persons and the evening begins at 6 p.m. Earlier this month, Raffles Hotel Le Royal launched a heartfelt art exhibition titled ‘I Spy – The Magic of Raffles’, which invites guests to look closer at unique details of the storied hotel, a longstanding cultural landmark with a strong commitment to community, education and the arts. The children’s artworks from the exhibition will be part of the auction on Nov. 24. “Through the eyes of Cambodia’s youth, this unique art project captures not just the beauty of our historic hotel, but also the essence of heritage, imagination and hope,” Raffles Hotel Le Royal General Manager Dagmar Lyons said. As part of the project, Raffles Hotel Le Royal organised an art competition for 25 children from Sunrise Cambodia. Guided by renowned Cambodian artist Chhim Sothy and supported by fellow artists Li Ming Hang and Emmeline Mulder, the children were invited to artistically interpret ‘The Magic of Raffles’ in their own way. On Children’s Day, five outstanding artworks were selected and transformed into limited-edition postcards, now available at the Raffles Boutique, with proceeds benefiting Sunrise Cambodia’s creative education programs. Green Globe Certification The 96th anniversary celebrations come as Raffles Hotel Le Royal was also recently recognised for a second-straight year with an industry-leading Green Globe Certification highlighting the hotel’s commitment to sustainable practices. The designation was awarded based on the hotel’s efficient resource management, its innovative and engaging community programmes, unique environmental initiatives and other best practices. The Green Globe programme traces its roots back to the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in 1992, where 182 heads of state from around the world endorsed the Agenda 21 principles of sustainable development. Today, Green Globe has grown to become the world’s leading certification for sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism worldwide. The Green Globe Certification Standard includes 44 criteria in four groups and supported by over 380 compliance indicators. The standard has been developed over three decades and guarantees the highest level of sustainable operations and management.
Disasters often strike without warning, leaving behind devastating consequences. The aftermath can be even more challenging, as communities struggle to rebuild and return to normal. In such times, swift support from all sectors is essential to help those affected recover and regain stability. Nan province recently experienced its worst flood in decades following severe storms. Within hours, the entire town was submerged, bringing daily life to a standstill. Electricity, water supply, and public services were abruptly cut off. Although the provincial hospital continued caring for existing patients, it was forced to stop accepting new ones and relocate its emergency services to a safer location. While floodwaters receded within four to five days, they left behind thick mud and piles of debris, making cleanup and recovery efforts even more difficult. Nissan Thailand was among the first in the private sector to respond. In collaboration with its local dealer, Siam Nissan Muang Nan, the company quickly mobilized to support relief efforts and help restore normalcy to the town. The first stop for Nissan’s assistance was Nan Hospital. Anticipating the challenges ahead—as the hospital would need to care for both existing patients and new arrivals in the aftermath of the flood—Nissan Thailand delivered essential office and medical equipment for use in patient wards. This support has helped the hospital operate more efficiently, enabling faster and smoother service delivery while improving public access to quality healthcare. The next stop was Thai Rath Wittaya 45 Ban Don Thaen School in Wiang Sa District, Nan Province. Nissan provided teaching and learning materials, allowing the school to quickly resume its educational activities and bring students back to the classroom sooner. This assistance is part of the “Nissan Cares: Flood Relief Support Campaign”, one of Nissan’s ongoing contributions to Thai society, where the company has operated for over 73 years. It complements Nissan’s broader efforts to support social, economic, and mobility development, all aimed at enriching people’s lives. In addition, Nissan launched the “Nissan Cares: Flood Relief Support Campaign” to assist customers affected by the recent flooding in the province. Running from today through December 31, 2025, the campaign offers a 30% discount on parts, chemicals, lubricants, and decorative items damaged in the flood. The support provided to the hospital, school, and affected customers reflects Nissan Thailand’s strong commitment to social responsibility and the promotion of an inclusive society. As an integral part of the Thai community, Nissan remains dedicated to standing alongside Thailand and its people through every challenge. This haven, located in the picturesque coastal city of Nha Trang, has been changing lives and nurturing dreams for over a decade. Thien Tam Orphanage is a testament to the power of compassion and community in providing children with the opportunity to flourish despite the challenges they face. A Safe Haven for Vulnerable Children Thien Tam Orphanage was founded with a clear and noble mission: to provide a safe, nurturing environment for children who have lost their parents or have been abandoned. The orphanage offers a loving home to children of all ages, from infants to teenagers, ensuring they receive proper care, education, and emotional support. For many of these children, Thien Tam is not just an orphanage; it’s their sanctuary, where they find solace, security, and a sense of belonging. The dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to provide the children with access to quality education, helping them reach their full potential. With a strong emphasis on learning, the orphanage ensures that the children receive the necessary tools to thrive academically. Additionally, the orphanage offers skill development programs, helping older children acquire vocational skills that will serve them well as they transition into adulthood. These programs empower them to lead independent lives and contribute to their communities. A Community of Support What sets Thien Tam Orphanage apart is the strong sense of community and support it fosters. Local and international volunteers play a crucial role in the orphanage’s daily operations, contributing their time and resources to improve the lives of the children. The spirit of unity and generosity is palpable at Thien Tam, as countless individuals from different corners of the world come together to make a positive impact on the children’s lives. Support and Donations Thien Tam Orphanage relies on the goodwill of donors and volunteers to continue its vital work. Whether through financial contributions, material donations, or volunteering, every bit of support makes a difference in the lives of these deserving children. Your generosity can help provide nutritious meals, educational materials, and a loving home for the children at Thien Tam.
Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is stepping up to stem the scourge of cervical cancer in Cambodia by hosting a special fundraising event on August 12.With proper screening, cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. However, the disease continues to wreak devastation in Cambodia where it is the most prevalent cancer among women. The country lacks organized cervical cancer screening programs and national human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination policies. As a result, the disease causes over 1,000 deaths per year in Cambodia. In tandem with AmCham Cambodia, Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh is doing its bit to improve the screening process through its ‘Let’s Give Back!’ charity evening, which will be held on Friday, August 12. “Corporate Social Responsibility and giving back to the country and community where we do best is now one of AmCham’s highest core values,” said Mr. Travis Mitchell, AmCham Executive Director. This year, AmCham has prioritized CSR more than ever. AmCham is the first chamber not just in Cambodia but the region to do so. Proceeds from the event, which takes place in the hotel’s ballroom and will feature free-flow soft and alcoholic drinks, gourmet canapés and live music, will be donated to Cambodia’s Mercy Medical Center. It will go toward cancer screenings and tests for garment factory workers. The drive is part of a wider goal to reach the estimated 500,000 women working in Cambodia’s garment industry through a mobile testing program that gets underway in November 2022. The World Health Organization and the Cambodian Ministry of Health have designated cervical cancer as the number one priority for prevention, with a goal of eliminating cervical cancer deaths by 2030. One cervical cancer test takes between five and 15 minutes and costs only US $1 per person. All proceeds from the event will go toward screening as many women as possible. It is also possible to donate directly to Mercy Medical Center. US $150 will cover the costs of screening ten women. For more information, please visit https://mercymedcambodia.org/ “No woman should die of cervical cancer,” says Herman Kemp, General Manager of Hyatt Regency Phnom Penh. “But the disease remains a huge problem in Cambodia, mainly due to a lack of knowledge. “See and treat programs like the government cervical cancer task force program, in conjunction with public and private hospitals such as Uof P and MMCC, are preventing cancer and saving lives.”

For a decade now, thanks to the tourism agency Off Road Laos Adventures we have been organizing regular donations based on the needs of Laos villages inhabitants (scholar supplies, prescription glasses, clothes, etc…). These actions are really useful; however, we regret that they don’t provide a long term support. To transform our short-term actions into a sustainable support, we took the decision to create a complete humanitarian project: building an IT school. It will give the opportunity to children, isolated in the Laos mountains, to learn how to use a computer which is now a must-known to get a job in cities and therefore help financially their families still in the villages. This project is divided in several steps, which will be held depending on the donations that we get. Thank you for supporting us, and keep on making your donations for the building of this school in a Hmong village in 2018. TO MAKE A DONATION, CHECK OUR WORK, CLICK HERE Laos is a developing country with still some remote areas where locals can face difficulties to get basic resources, and a limited access to education. In order to help them, Off Road Laos Adventures & Trekking Laos have decided a few years ago to get involved, and is since running more and more charity work and donations thanks to associations and benevolent travelers. To build on that progress, we now have bigger projects for 2017 to construct a school in a remote local village and more houses for the villagers and to welcome our future travelers to share more time with locals. If you like this project, please enjoy our last video on our survey in Northern Laos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xT_R0Q3FVCY Enfants du Laos Meaning Children of Laos, Enfants du Laos aims to develop access to education for ethnic groups of the country. Our goal is to enable children to have a better future by their own. These villages with lack of resources and school furniture need our help. That’s the reason why we develop school infrastructures with western courses. Our long term targets are to provide a sustainable support with a family autonomy to contribute to their children education and to ensure them a serene professional future. https://www.enfantsdulaos.org

These actions are really useful; however, we regret that they don’t provide a long term support.

School in Laos

To transform our short-term actions into a sustainable support, we took the decision to create a complete humanitarian project: building an IT school. It will give the opportunity to children, isolated in the Laos mountains, to learn how to use a computer which is now a must-known to get a job in cities and therefore help financially their families still in the villages.

This project is divided in several steps, which will be held depending on the donations that we get. Thank you for supporting us, and keep on making your donations for the building of this school in a Hmong village in 2018.

Marriott International in Asia Pacific today announced that close to USD 421,000 was collectively raised from Run to Give Hotel Charity Runs that took place in 115 locations on September 24, 2017 across Asia Pacific. Close to 32,500 supporters came together at various locations across Asia Pacific. Now in its fourth year, Run to Give is unique in each location and the events are organized by different Marriott International properties in various locations; some joining hands for the first time to organize such a large-scale event. Funds raised in each location will go to a local charity for maximum relevance and a broader impact with wider reach. Craig S. Smith, President and Managing Director, Marriott International Asia Pacific, shared, “We are thrilled with the excellent result this year as we have achieved breakthrough in terms of both number of runners and the total amount of donations over the last four years. Run to Give demonstrates our commitment to drive sustainable social and economic impacts in the communities where we live and work. As Marriott increases our footprint across Asia Pacific, our “Spirit to Serve” remains strong since we believe it is exactly what makes us strong.” Run to Give is a key event in Asia Pacific under the company’s ‘TakeCare’ movement, which aims to encourage associates to live their best life by promoting physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing and creating strong team synergy while making a difference in communities that Marriott International operates in. Started in 2014 by legacy Starwood Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacific as Hotel Charity Run, the inaugural event saw an overwhelming response of over 20,000 runners take part in 92 locations across Asia Pacific; raising a total of close to USD 228,000. Since 2015, the run took on the official event name ‘Run to Give’ and in 2016, Run to Give marked the first associate event where legacy Starwood and Marriott International came together to celebrate a meaningful cause after the merger in September 2016, raising a contribution of nearly USD 270,000.

Community Learning International (CLI) is a non-profit small International Non-Governmental Organization. In addition to being non-governmental, they do not promote any religion or ideology. Having been involved in Laos since 1997, CLI is registered in the USA having charitable organisation status. Maintaining no US office or staff, all funds are allocated to Laos operations, indeed they are a very lean, low overhead organisation. Community Learning International strongly believe that education, formal and non-formal is key to providing a long term solution to development, including poverty reduction, and this is where most of their resources are directed. They work to improve the limited formal system in Laos – by building village schools, for example – and to supplement it – via their Lao Children’s Library Boats and their Learning Centers. They also address near-term family income improvement through projects supporting local activities such as women’s weaving groups and village coffee growing. They are rural/remote in their orientation, because that is where most Lao live, and that is where the needs are greatest. They have 37 staff, 35 of them Lao (including from ethnic minorities), 28 of them women. Almost all CLI staff work in their home rural districts, and the only non-Lao staff are CLI’s founder and international director Bob Anderson who has lived in Laos for 15 years; and CLI’s development director Alexander Robb-Millar who has gained extensive experience in Laos over the past 10 years. The CLI mission statement is: Community Learning International creates opportunities for disadvantaged communities, families and individuals to work to improve their lives. The mission statement is purposely broad, to give CLI flexibility to respond effectively to local needs and conditions. Those local needs and conditions, combined with CLI awareness of options from outside, are the mix that defines their response, not a narrow mandate drawn in advance. Community Learning International use a couple of slogans to illustrate what they are aiming to accomplish in applying the mission statement, through educating young people especially, but in all their work they are forming futures and opening minds to a work of opportunities. Much of their work is done with partner organizations, which leverages resources to do more than could be done separately. CLI is governed by an international volunteer Board of Directors, with board members currently from the USA, England, Thailand and Laos. They believe education, formal and non-formal, is the key to longer-term development, including poverty reduction, and therefore concentrate most of their resources on children and youth – on those lives where we can have the biggest impact, the greatest return on investment, to use business language. Based on over 16 years of first hand knowledge of Laos and its people, CLI has built deep and trusted relationships with local communities. By training and employing staff from the actual districts we work, consulting directly with the local people and listening to their needs, it is this on the ground presence and local knowledge that is essential for success in development. Working with other NGOs and world renowned organisations including Carla International, and in collaboration with the Royal Geographical Society, CLI is open to new ideas on expanding aid, however not to the detriment of our core activities. They continually strive to be as effective as possible. There are two CLI “book boats” taking Lao books to villages along the Mekong River and its tributaries. The boats serve children in more than 100 riverside villages, who otherwise would never have books in their hands. Each boat normally goes out for two weeks to a month each trip. The boats carry more than 1,000 books each. They typically arrive at a village in the morning and the village primary school is dismissed for the day to allow students to read nonstop. Hearing the boat, students rush eagerly to the riverbank. They go aboard in shifts to choose books, then sit nearby and read intently, then repeat the process. Boat staff organize active learning games for part of the day, games that emphasize the importance and fun of reading. The boat stays overnight at the village and children continue to borrow books well past dark, to be read by candlelight at home. In the morning the books are collected and the boat goes to the next village. The boats also circulate around nearly 100 “book bags” of 100 titles each, leaving them with selected primary schools and periodically swapping them so readers have new titles. CLI had planned to expand the project with another boat in 2012 and had a pledge of funding. But the new boat plan is on hold while CLI attention is directed first at finding needed funding to maintain all core education activities, before expanding the boats project.

Community Learning International kids

The CLI mission statement is:

A local village helped by Community Learning International

Community Learning International creates opportunities for disadvantaged communities, families and individuals to work to improve their lives.

Community Learning International classroom
