Alma Resort Cam Ranh is poised to put scenic Cam Ranh on the cultural map with a new extravaganza celebrating Vietnam’s rich heritage, traditions and folklore with contemporary flair. From July 5 this year, Alma’s vast outdoor amphitheatre will host “The Stage – Alma Show”; “a cross-cultural collaboration between Vietnamese and Korean creatives” entailing four daily performances that each cater to up to 400 spectators.

The 70-minute “Alma Show” makes for a visual marvel that pays homage to Vietnam’s “five elements of nature” earth, water, fire, wood and metal. The entertainment line-up features magicians, dancers, water puppetry, special effects, a flash mob, Ao Dai fashion show and more for all ages.

The spectacle involves audience interaction and opens with dancers bringing the vanquished Champa Kingdom’s “Apsara” dance to life in tribute to the Cham people’s long history with the local area.

The stories behind Vietnam’s five elements are told in short yet spectacular segments. After a short water puppet show underpinned by the elements ‘water’ and ‘wood’, ‘earth’ is depicted by dancers and magicians gathering silks to craft a colossal lotus flower. ‘Fire’ is marked in fiery style, with a magician performing a fire sword show before the dramatic rescue of a dancer in a large cage that bursts into flames. Following a mesmerising Non La (conical hat) dance, a contemporary take on the element ‘metal’ encompasses all sorts of visual effects during the flash mob and elegant Ao Dai fashion parade.

The Alma Show will be staged twice per night from 6pm and 8pm by 24 dancers and magicians Jacky (Haesung Kim) and Bui Huu Thien under the stewardship of acclaimed executive directors and producers Jin (Hyukjin Cho) and Terry (Byongkok Jung) of Vietnam-based company The Stage VN.

Jin’s impressive resume includes directing and producing the Dana Show and directing the opening ceremony of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Terry was the chief director of the Dreams Come True Magic Tour and Chuncheon Lake Fairy Festival.

Meanwhile “The Magic and Water Puppet Show”, totalling 50 minutes, will be offered twice daily from 11am and 3pm. As its name suggests, the show includes 30 minutes of traditional water puppetry, by 10 professional puppeteers manoeuvring puppets in chest-deep water, and 20 minutes of “magical water-themed illusions”.

The show portrays village life, farming scenes, folklore, and mythical legends symbolising Vietnam’s patriotism. ‘Thánh Gióng’, about a young boy who grows into a giant hero and rides a flying iron horse to defeat invaders, and the ‘Emperor Lê Lợi’s and the Magical Sword’, involving the gods granting Le Loi a magical sword to liberate Vietnam, are among the show’s highlights.

The show is directed by the 2014 world champion in puppetry, Nguyễn Tiến Dũng, the Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre’s artistic director.

A hospitality professional with more than a decade’s experience working for some of the world’s most acclaimed hotel brands and restaurants has been appointed to a senior culinary position at Alma Resort Cam Ranh. Equipped with 11 years’ experience cooking a variety of cuisines, South Korean-born Taehoon Lee has been appointed 30-hectare Alma’s Korean chef de cuisine.

He will oversee Korean cuisine at the resort’s recently reopened Asiana restaurant and introduce Korean cuisine to Alma’s Food Court, which is home to a variety of Vietnamese and international dining outlets, as well as the resort’s in-room menus.

He joins Alma after working at Vietnam’s Banyan Tree Lang Co as executive sous chef. Following his studies at South Korea’s Hotel Tourism Vocational College in Ansan, he started his career at Incheon’s Italian restaurant T Robin before progressing to two Michelin-starred fine dining sushi restaurant Shoukouwa at Raffles Singapore as a line cook leader and one Michelin-starred French restaurant Dining In Space as chef de partie.

He has also worked at Peruvian restaurant Y Gaston in Lima, deemed among the World’s Top 33 Restaurants in 2017, premium Korean beef BBQ restaurant Sibsamdae in Incheon, and Sokcho’s brunch café Starian. Since he moved to Vietnam in 2021, he has heated up the frying pan at Ho Chi Minh City’s Bornga restaurant, Mandarin Oriental Saigon, and Ourhome at Hai Phong’s Kovie Hotel.

Alma Resort has introduced a vegan menu in a bid to embrace sustainability, promote healthy eating, reduce animal suffering, and tap into the world’s growing love affair with meatless cuisine

Alma also sources some ingredients from its onsite organic sustainable farm including two large herb gardens and a nursery garden. Alma joined forces with Vegan Food Quest’s founder Paul Eyers to help develop a new vegan menu and dishes, deliver staff training and workshops, further source vegan products and ingredients and review and advise on existing menus.

“There are so many compelling reasons to eat plant-based food; we felt compelled to cater to not only vegan guests but those who are keen to eat well and are curious to try plant-based options,” said Alma’s managing director Herbert Laubichler-Pichler.

“There are multiple health benefits for ourselves and our planet by eating plant-based cuisine. In addition to a purported 52 percent reduced risk of heart disease, our planet is in crisis. The Amazon has lost some 800 million trees in just six years due to the beef and dairy industry. An estimated 98 percent of animals globally are raised in factory farms.”

The new menu’s items include “Wok-fried mixed vegetables” entailing broccoli, cauliflower, carrot, shitake mushroom, lingzhi mushroom and vegan oyster sauce

“The commitment to offering more plant-based dishes at Alma Resort is clear to see, and the team are eager to cater for guests by also adapting dishes where possible to make them vegan,” added Eyers, who has been a vegan for more than 10 years.

According to Eyers, Southeast Asia has more vegans than anywhere in the world, with nine percent of the population identifying as vegan. Google searches for vegan food skyrocketed some 5000% in 2021, when the world was in the grip of the global pandemic.

Alma Resort Cam Ranh has unveiled a cutting-edge golf simulator, transporting guests to iconic golf courses around the world via virtual reality. For VND 450,000 per hour, guests experience virtual reality golf, choosing from about 125 golf courses simulating golf courses in a host of countries. Golf courses range from Vietnam’s Van Tri Golf Club and California’s Torrey Pines Golf Course to Thailand’s Alpine Golf Club and China’s JinMen Golf Course.

Equipment includes two sets of golf clubs, a projector, a sensor that measures the swing speed of the club, ball speed and ball direction, a golf course simulation screen, and a recording camera to help guests correct their golf posture or to save as a souvenir.

A luxury resort on Vietnam’s Cam Ranh peninsula could not agree more that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, rolling out a hearty “breakfast hopping” journey entailing four different dining establishments.

The unusual experience involves starting out at Alma Resort’s Alma Garden before moving to La Casa, Alma Food Court and finally Alma Lounge to sample their rich and varied breakfasts in the same morning.

“Guests kept asking ‘which breakfast should I go to?’,” said the resort’s managing director Herbert Laubichler-Pichler. “All our breakfasts have their drawcards so we started suggesting guests try them all yet, like bar hopping, it’s best to pace yourself so you can go the distance! Bar hopping is a thing and we’re hoping this delectable journey, in which we pull out all of the stops to help you eat like a king, makes breakfast hopping a thing too.”

Alma Garden beats at the heart of the resort, with live cooking stations that evoke a marketplace atmosphere serving the likes of Vietnamese soups and omelettes made right before the guests’ eyes. Serving an extensive buffet breakfast with Vietnamese, Asian and Western favourites, options range from kimchi, tropical fruits, salads, vegetables, Vietnamese beef stew, and rice, to cheeses, breads, pasties, pancakes, waffles, pretzels, sausages, bacon, and cheesy potato bake.

Alma, situated on Vietnam’s scenic Cam Ranh peninsula, has unveiled a series of wellness retreats featuring the likes of singing bowl meditation, hot stone therapy, yoga and detox and slimming treatments.

The resort’s Le Spa, which has 13 treatment rooms sprinkled onto the beachfront, has this month rolled out its ‘Le Spa Wellness Journey’, ‘Le Spa Half Day Retreat’ and ‘Detox and Slimming Program’ designed to inspire participants to kick-start a healthier lifestyle and lay the foundations for a longer life.

A three-day program, the Le Spa Wellness Journey’s first day starts out with a 60-minute power yoga session, followed by a 30-minute body exfoliation and a 60-minute back-stone treatment.

The second day comprises 60 minutes of singing bowl meditation or yoga, a 90-minute ‘Detox and Slimming Treatment’ and 30 minutes of foot stone therapy. The Detox and Slimming Treatment is underpinned by a massage technique using a wooden Gua Sha instrument designed to improve microcirculation and lipolytic action, release the storage of toxins and tackle cellulite to help transform the upper and lower body.

The final day of the three-day retreat begins with 60 minutes of Hatha yoga before a 90-minute energizing intensive facial treatment and 30 minutes of ‘Healing Hands’ therapy that focuses on acupressure points to release blockages and prompt healing.

The Le Spa Half Day Retreat and Detox and Slimming Program each start with a private 60-minute yoga and meditation class followed by a steam and sauna with fresh herbal aroma.

The half day retreat also features a 30-minute body exfoliation and a 90-minute ‘Le Spa Signature Treatment’ underscored by Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi, Shiatsu, and Thai stretching techniques that target pressure points and mirror the calming motion of gentle sea waves.

Community involvement, protecting the environment and wellbeing make for a winning trifecta for hotels in the new year, says a lifelong hotelier. Alma Resort Cam Ranh’s managing director Herbert Laubichler-Pichler said his team had created compelling experiences for 2024 to encourage holidaymakers to volunteer alongside the resort and give back to local communities. For example, guests spend a morning with volunteers who cook meals and feed disadvantaged school children after class in a nearby community.

“Some holidaymakers like to kick back by the pool, and that’s perfectly fine, but we understand others are keen to bring extra depth to their trip in a kind-hearted way,” he said. “We’ve organised some half- and full-day volunteering opportunities for guests and staff. You get a real sense of the local community and feel rewarded doing your bit to help.”

Alma is in the process of implementing what is believed to be Vietnam’s most ambitious solar power project, installing 4470 solar panels totalling 23,290 square metres on the roofs of its 196 pavilions, two V-shaped towers housing 384 suites, lobby lounge and utility building. With a capacity of 2462 kilowatts peak – the rate at which it generates energy at its peak performance on a sunny day – the solar power system will fuel between a quarter to almost 35 percent of Alma’s energy needs, depending on occupancy dictated by the low and high seasons.

The resort is part of the “End Plastic Soup in Cam Ranh” campaign, attracting volunteers to collect plastic from Long Beach to be upcycled. The “End Plastic Soup in Cam Ranh” campaign is part of the global environmental End Plastic Soup project, supported by thousands of Rotarians worldwide, with a goal seeking “no more plastic soup” in the oceans and seas and “no more plastic waste in our lakes, rivers, forests, parks and streets” by 2050.

According to Laubichler-Pichler, wellness tourism will continue to be a huge focus for the travel industry in the post-pandemic era. Alma’s Le Spa will soon roll out an array of wellness experiences including new wellness retreats and journeys up to three days long encompassing spa therapies, singing bowl meditation, power yoga, health drinks and more.

In a bid to be more sustainable and self-sufficient, Alma this year unveiled its own onsite Herb Garden, Nursery Garden and Chicken Farm, providing fresh produce and eggs served at Alma’s restaurants. “Our resort has started running complimentary guided garden tours to equip guests with handy tips on how to nurture their own veggie patch and look after chickens,” said Laubicher-Pichler. “Alma is also planning to roll out cooking classes by the garden, where guests pick, clean, and cook their own healthy meals.” The resort’s Asiana restaurant is set to offer a vegan menu and vegan buffets in 2024.

“There are so many things hotels and resorts can do in the new year to not only boost the guest experience and guests’ health but also help the community and protect the environment; we hope to set a good example and encourage other hotels to take a leaf out of our book so that the hotel industry is a genuine force for change.”

Alma this year joined forces with boutique travel agency Zazen Travel to launch ‘A Journey Through Culture and Cuisine’, a cultural immersion experience anchored by an interactive cooking class. After rummaging through the colourful and lively Cam Duc Market to experience the local way of life, and learn about fresh, local ingredients to be used in the cooking class, participants visit a unique temple and a mango farm. They then learn how to cook recipes handed down the generations, indulge in their creations together for lunch and take home a recipe book and an apron, along with new memories.

He loved the view

Big resorts are particularly popular amongst families, and for good reasons. Family resorts are often made up of a large hotel, plus surrounding facilities and venues like restaurants, pools, or private beaches where you can spend a relaxing holiday with your kids. While most of the largest resorts in the world have been established in the USA, Leonardo and I found one in Vietnam that was more than large enough to spend a week or two there, or even a whole month! Shame we only had a few days to enjoy it. This resort is Alma, in the amazing area called Cam Ranh, near the southern city of Nha Trang.

Not that neighbouring resorts were much smaller: it seems that, thanks to its wide and long beach and the lots of land available, the Cam Ranh peninsula has attracted the investment of big groups who went for large plots and built family-friendly resorts. These attract both locals from all over Vietnam (and this was the case during our stay, due to summer local holiday season) and foreigners from different part of the world.

Back to Alma, resorts don’t get much more comprehensive than that: 14 bars and restaurants, 12 pools, a private beach, a cinema, a kids’ club, a science museum, a Spa, a mini-golf course, an amphitheatre, a cinema, a VR games room, a water sports centre, a waterpark with slides, a mini market, a fully equipped gym, a youth centre and a conference centre.

I was immediately impressed by the huge lobby with its very high ceilings and its special architecture; from there we could see the amazing resort grounds all the way to the sea. We followed the staff to the check in lounge, and we walked through amazingly manicured gardens. The landscaping is fantastic, hands down to the gardeners team for maintaining such perfection around the resort greeneries.

The lounge was spacious with check in facilities and complimentary cookies, fruit, tea and coffee. Despite the resort looking very busy, we were welcomed by lovely staff and received a VIP treatment, which Leonardo enjoyed very much. The higher level of organisation could be seen from the very first 30 minutes we spent at the resort.

Their Director of Marketing Communication, Mildred Amon, was at the lounge while we checked in, and we had a nice chat. I discovered that the resort was running at 100% occupancy and that at that particular time, Alma had 3200 guests, serviced by 800 staff! She also told me about the amazing site of the plot where Alma sits: 30 hectares. Alma is so vast that a whole team drive dozens of golf buggies, whizzing around the resort’s paths, collecting customers from any point, and dropping to wherever within the resort they wish to go, 16 hours a day.

Mildred then escorted us to our room, on the 14th floor of the North Tower. The stylish suite was remarkably spacious, at least 80 sqm, with a large terrace from where to marvel at the entire resort, and at the ocean. A spectacular view Leonardo and I enjoyed for the whole of our stay at Alma. Our suite had a huge lounge with a small service toilet and a fully-equipped kitchen which had a large fridge/freezer, four hobs, an oven and a microwave, a fancy coffee machine with pods to use, and a bottle of quality red wine as a welcome drink.

The sofa was so comfortable and the TV was large and Smart, though Leonardo and I did not get to use it much. The double bedroom had an en-suite tub and a shower room with bathroom amenities of very good quality, and the bed was amazing. There is more: housekeeping was done twice daily by wonderful staff who did an excellent job.

The food

One thing Alma is good at is food, and for a reason. First of all, they have 14 (yes fourteen!) between bars and restaurants.

The breakfast buffet at Alma Garden was huge and had a wide range of choices of asian and western dishes, and many different cooking stations for everything you could wish for – and more – including pastries, hams and meats, eggs to order, Vietnamese noodles and a machine for help-yourself pancakes (a hit with kids). Some room rates include breakfast choice at La Casa for Italian great options.

For food and snacks outside usual meals hours can be had at the American Bar, at the Beach Bar – with its menu of soft drinks, cocktails, beers and light bites – and at Chilli’s Snacks & Bar, two American food trucks set up outside the amphitheatre, where they shows movies under the stars.

Meals can be had at Italian restaurant La Casa (dinner only), which serves Italian favourites plus an amazing pizza, at the beachfront restaurant Atlantis, and at the Alma Lounge and Alma Garden. All restaurants are lovely in style and always had something to eat, whether it was Asian style or European.

But let me also mention the resort Food Court, a casual dining spot with rotating food trucks – Little New York, The French Bakery and The Noodle House to name some – for an easy-peasy self-serve meal; and the supermarket, where you can buy stuff to eat/cook later in the comfort of your room, and that helps a lot when you have a picky kid.

And for the kids?

Well, the kids at Alma get extremely spoiled, to the point we can state that Alma is the perfect place for your next family getaway, believe me. There are full indoor and outdoor activities to keep them busy

Offsprings can be booked into the Kids’ Club, complete of ball pens, climbing frames, an arts and crafts area, library, nap zone as well as piles of toys and games, as well as a huge kids-only pool complete with mushroom fountains and water games. They also have periodic singing and dancing lessons, cooking classes and team games. Leonardo enjoyed his time there.

There is also a Youth Club where teenagers can enjoy billiard, table tennis, table hockey and video games, as well as a chill-out space with bean bags. Leonardo’s favourite was the virtual reality game. There is also a minigolf area.

Water seems to be the biggest kids’ attraction at Alma. The top feature is the Splash Park, Alma’s signature water park. It’s huge and it features a wave pool, kid’s pool and water slides, as well as an amazing lazy river with a strong current. Then there are the pools. 12 of them! They start at the lounge area and cascade down all the way to the beach. One day we treated ourselves and tried them all. Some are more suitable for kids as they have a wide, shallow water area with chairs and fountains. In some the water is deep so they are not ideal for toddlers without inflatables. Leonardo is an excellent swimmer and showed off his skill in each of the pools. The pools are kept very clean, and there is never a problem finding a sun-bed despite the high number of guests in the resort. We ended the experience with a snack BBQ and a drink at the beach bar, then took a stroll along the pristine beach.

Let me also tell you what we didn’t get to do at Alma, mostly for lack of time. There is a Science Museum promoting interactive learning through a host of exhibits focused on mind-boggling wonders. There is a 400-seat, 1000 square metre Amphitheater ideal for outdoor events. There is a 75-seat private Cinema airing three films a day with movies for all ages. There is a Karaoke Rooms comprising five sound-proof karaoke rooms. And last but not least, the sporting facilities range from a water sports centre kayaking and bodyboarding, a beachfront football field, and tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, an outdoor archery range, an 18-hole putting green, open-air exercise stations and a giant chess board. 

And for the guests’ necessities, there is an internal minimart selling vacation essentials, a Gift Shop offering souvenirs such as local handicrafts, and a Tour Desk helping guests orchestrate day trips and excursions in the local area.

All the above could not be possible without Alma’s lovely and attentive team. We were impressed by the complete hospitality of the staff, by the fact that despite the property was extremely busy, everything seemed under control and we could always see smiles on everyone’s face. The staff in general were friendly and accommodating, professional, polite and welcoming. They all went out of their ways to make sure we felt comfortable, and made our stay even more unique.

Epilogue

Alma for us has been one of the best resorts in our trip to Vietnam. Alma made us feel at home, and there’s so much to keep children of all ages entertained – both day and night – that I never heard the words “I’m bored” from Leonardo.

It certainly took a lot of stress out of me when I needed to relax a bit.

The quality at Alma is high, and prices are affordable; the only thing i could wish for was to have more days to spend there so we could explore everything on offer. 

I recommend Alma to anyone, with or without kids, looking for an amazing holiday in Vietnam!

The hotel industry in Vietnam’s idyllic Cam Ranh is tackling the scourge of plastic waste head on, working together to ultimately help establish a local plant that upcycles all types of plastic waste.

Some 300 volunteers joined the weekend beach clean, collecting around 1.5 tons of plastic waste

The “End Plastic Soup in Cam Ranh” campaign, spearheaded by Alma Resort, The Anam Cam Ranh and Moevenpick Cam Ranh and supported by 10 other resorts on the Cam Ranh peninsula, kicked off with an extensive two-day clean-up of Long Beach on June 17-18.

The weekend beach clean attracted around 300 volunteers from participating hotels, Vietnam’s Rotary Clubs and local schools, and roughly 1.5 tons of plastic were collected from the 15-kilometre-long Long Beach to be upcycled. A welcome dinner for volunteers and the community was held at Alma on June 17.

Alma’s managing director Herbert Laubichler-Pichler said Cam Ranh’s hospitality industry would work together with Rotary Club Saigon International to support Rotary-initiative End Plastic Soup to establish a plant in Cam Ranh to upcycle all types of plastics.

“Alma and the local hospitality industry know it is crucial to do our bit to raise awareness about the damage plastic is doing to our stunning oceans, direct harmful plastics to upcycling efforts, and fundraise to help contribute to establish a plant here in Cam Ranh that will help the environment and the local community,” Laubichler-Pichler said.

Other hotels participating in the campaign include Aquamarine Resort, Cam Ranh Riviera Beach Resort & Spa, Selectum Noa Resort, Ana Mandara Resort Cam Ranh, Melia Vinpearl Cam Ranh Beach Resort, Radisson Blu Resort Cam Ranh, Swandor Cam Ranh, The Westin Resort & Spa Cam Ranh, Wyndham Garden Cam Ranh Resort and The Arena Cam Ranh Resort.

According to the World Bank, Vietnam has become a major source of plastic waste in the world, with an estimated 3.1 million tons of plastic waste dumped on land and between 0.28 and 0.73 million tons dumped into the ocean each year.

The “End Plastic Soup in Cam Ranh” campaign is part of the global environmental End Plastic Soup project, supported by thousands of Rotarians worldwide, with a goal seeking “no more plastic soup” in the oceans and seas and “no more plastic waste in our lakes, rivers, forests, parks and streets” by 2050.

Community-based organisation Rotary Club Saigon International is part of Rotary International, one of the largest service organizations in the world.
