On a sweltering morning last month, Pluto—my trusted photographer and videographer—and I embarked on a journey from Bangkok towards Suphanburi province. Our first stop was the majestic Phra Pathom Chedi, located in Nakhon Pathom, a site that left us both awestruck.

As we approached Phra Pathom Chedi, the first thing that struck us was its sheer scale. The towering stupa, known as one of the largest in the world, stood proudly against the clear blue sky. This golden-brown monument, which reaches a height of 120.45 meters, is not only an architectural marvel but also a significant religious symbol in Thai Buddhism.

Historical Significance and Legends

Phra Pathom Chedi‘s history is as rich as its grandeur. Originally constructed during the I, around the 6th to 11th centuries, it is believed to mark the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Thailand. This legend adds a layer of cultural depth to the site’s historical significance.

The temple grounds also host a school for monks, where young novices, dressed in their distinctive orange robes, were studying under the shade of the arched corridors that surround the stupa. It was humbling to witness these monks, some of whom were barely teenagers, deep in meditation or engaged in their studies. Their presence added to the sacredness of the place, reminding us that Phra Pathom Chedi is not just a historical site, but a living, breathing center of Buddhist learning and practice.

When you think about Danang, most people think about sunlight and sea, so the natural choice for a hotel is one close to the beach. While this is true for us too, Leonardo and I had 10 days to stay in Danang, so we also wanted to sleep in a different place, like a boutique resort. It was during my booking.com search that I stumbled upon The Memory Danang. What stroke first me were the photos: it looked like a maze in the jungle, with its nature dangling down from balconies, the brown bricks used in its structure, the dark green themes, and an amazing metal spiral staircase. We had to sleep there, so I booked a balcony room.

At check-in day, we realized from the very outside that this was indeed an original building. Its strange geometry and the contrast with the surrounding buildings is surprising. Leonardo saw immediately that it was not the usual hotel without character, and he loved it straight away. We were met by Miss Ngoc, the head receptionist, who explained to us the concept of the hotel while Leonardo socialised with the friendly staff. She then made me chose the aroma of the toiletries from a choice of three, and then directed us to our room with the hotel elevator.

The Deluxe Balcony Room I chose overlooks the inside of the hotel and the central reception downstairs, so it has no windows to the outside. However, the fact that the room’s small balcony looks right in the central hollow part of the hotel gives the impression of an open green space, with many layers of accommodation that are somehow conceived by the original design of the place. The one thing I noticed straight away in entering the room was that the air conditioned was turned off, yet the room felt cool.

The room was a bit dark, yes, but comfortably dark. The mattress was placed on a split level cement base and the desk/fridge/open wardrobe area was small but more than enough for what it is intended for. The major feature of the room is the bathroom, with its amazing stone walls and very roomy grindstone bathtub. Leonardo loved that one, and made full use of it! Things like quality shower gel, berry shampoo and handmade soap pieces completed the job.

Leonardo played a bit with his toys then hit the bed and fell asleep, so I had a bit of time for exploring the hotel. I was really pleased about the original design and the combination between modern and traditional, with lots of steel and cement mixed with traditional wooden features. Miss Ngoc informed me that the owners got the inspiration from outstanding handicraft villages such as Hoa Hai (grind stone village), Kim Bong (wood village), Non Nuoc (marble village), Thanh Ha (pottery village) and Tho Quang (fishing village). Well, kudos to the owners because The Memory Danang reflects Vietnamese traditional culture and honours the diligence and craftsmanship of artisans from traditional villages.

At the bar and reception area, the loudspeakers played soft piano music, soothing melodies that can also be heard from the rooms. The clientele seemed to range from high end to backpackers, since The Memory Danang also operates as an hostel, with beds in mixed gender dormitory rooms.

When I went back to my room, Leonardo was still sleeping and the feeling of freshness persisted, despite the air-con was still off. This is a godsend for someone like us who do not like air conditioning.

At night, I unwinded in their design bar with one of their signature cocktails, chatted to their capable barman, and planned the next day in Danang. The morning after, I enjoyed Vietnamese white coffee and a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, a delicate noodle soup made from beef bones, ginger, onions, and lots of aromatic spices. Their breakfast choice include the most popular Vietnamese breakfast soups, so if you are staying a few days at The Memory Danang, make sure you try them all.

And like its name suggest, it ensured we took with us memories of a country rich in history and in distinctive cultural features. Despite having very little to entertain kids, Leonardo really enjoyed the uniqueness of The Memory Danang and the friendly nature of all the amazing staff totally dedicated to it customers. The Krabi Rainforest Tour is the perfect tour for you if:

The Krabi Rainforest Tour is a full-day excursion which takes participants to some of the most spectacular areas of the Krabi province, which is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

For this tour we contracted Krabi Jungle Tour, and we were kindly taken care by Ms. Prae, a nice young local guide who managed the itinerary and marked the rhythm of the day with expertise and personality.

The visit started with a stop at the Tiger Cave Temple (in Thai language: Wat Tham Seua), one of the most respected places of worship in the whole of southern Thailand, founded in 1975 by the Venerable Monk Chammnian Silsetto. During one of his moments of meditation in the area, the monk noticed a tiger roaming around and discovered she lived in one of the innumerable surrounding caves. Hence the name of the temple.

Tigers are no longer roaming around Krabi, of course, but the feeling stays, and above all stays the natural frame to the temple made of caves, valleys, trees dating back hundreds of years and inaccessible mountains. The name of the area where the religious complex stands is Kiriwong Valley; the deity who created this valley must have been particularly inspired and generous when she donated this exceptional corner of nature to the world.

These mountains may be inaccessible, but the patience and devotion of the monks and of those who materially helped them build a stairway of 1237 steps made at least one of those mountains accessible. These hard steps take visitors to a height of about 280 meters, where a statue of the Buddha dominates and watches over the plains below, offering the sweating faithful and the courageous tourists who try their hand at this ascent an absolutely unique experience.

The visit to the Tiger Cave Temple starts at the base of the mountain, where the guide dispenses advice and recommendations to those in the group who decide to tackle the climb. Naturally, I preferred to avoid the undertaking, delegating to my friend Johanna, a twenty-year-old blogger from Estonia eager to take up the challenge, the thankless task of telling me the details.

After all, the area at the foot of the mountain is equally full of interesting ideas, and my time spent wandering in the lower part of the temple was not boring at all. I happily observed monks and statues of all kinds, among which, framed by a in Chinese style building, a beautiful representation of Kwan Yin, the goddess of mercy.

But the real attraction of the temple, both for those who climb up and those who don’t, are the incredible number of monkeys that descend from the slopes of the mountain in the hope of obtaining food from tourists, or to steal anything that may be of interest to them. Their acrobatics, their almost-human attitudes, their irreverence in climbing or placing their paws on any divinity – as they are naturally oblivious to any form of religious respect – are an irresistible attraction for any visitor who does not hesitate to challenge their aggressiveness and risks more than he’s allowed to for a few extra photos.

Before rejoining the survivors from the staircase climb, there is still enough time to go and visit the part of the temple where the monks meet and bless the postulants by sprinkling them with water, accompanying the gesture with chanting prayers. Entering the building where the meetings take place, one immediately notices that one of the walls, decorated with innumerable images of the Buddha in different sizes and in poses that symbolise the most significant moments of his life, is built right by the side of the mountain, giving the impression that the monks’ ceremony takes place inside a cave

But here return the ‘climbers’, sporting red faces marked by fatigue, yet smiling and apparently satisfied. “It was worth it” says Johanna, “although after the first 500 steps, the rise of the steps get higher and it gets really tiring. Of course, the views you get from the top compensate for the sacrifice”. “Never again” says someone else decisively, but I can clearly notice an exhausted expression of pride at having made it in her.

The tour continues towards the first relaxing stop of the day, for the joy of those who have climbed the mountain. After about an hour by minivan we reach the Hot Springs: a stream of hot water – 37/40 degrees – the flow of which, over the years, has smoothed the rocks to form comfortable natural pools, flows through the forest and ends into a larger river below.

The stream originates from underground springs of volcanic origin; it is rich in mineral substances and has therapeutic properties, though these have not been scientifically proven. However, the fact remains that abandoning yourself to the warmth of these waters, with your head resting on the edge and letting the flow caress your body, is in itself a healthy and relaxing experience, one we take advantage of without hesitation.

The pools slope down forming different levels, allowing the water to descend in tiny waterfalls, and the sense of pleasure that one feels in letting the limbs restore can hardly be explained in words. You need to try it.

Artificial hot water pools have recently been added to allow visitors to bathe even when the number of them exceeds the capacity of the natural pools. The idea is certainly welcome, but the sensation is absolutely not comparable to that of immersing yourself in the shade of the forest in a warm embrace with nature.

Warm and relaxed, we continue the tour to reach the restaurant of the Morakot Resort, a few minutes away from the Emerald Pool. Lunch is a light meal of Thai and international cuisine. The guide had previously enquired about any special needs, and upon our arrival everything had already been prepared.

Eventually we reach the entrance to the Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, the last stop of the excursion where, in a clearing that can be reached after about an hour’s walk, we find the Emerald Pool, so called for the amazing colour of its water.

To reach the lake you can take two different paths: a shorter one, of about 800 meters, which offers few points of interest other than the shade of the surrounding trees; and a longer one of about 1200 meters which winds along a concrete walkway and is bordered by an exceptional variety of tropical plants. This is of course the preferred one, and along it you can admire a network of streams and lakes that anticipate the relief of a refreshing bath.

Once in sight of the Emerald Pool, the clear waters of the lake become a temptation that is impossible to resist. I personally cannot resist and, without hesitation, I enter the water and once again let nature take care of me. And I totally ignore the guide that in the mean time explains to the rest of the group how to get to an equally spectacular blue pool 600 metres away.

There is a reason of course: I had already been to the blue pool in the past, and the image of an intensely blue water that calls you like Ulysses’ sirens coupled with a swimming ban due to quicksands was ultimately more a torture than an eye candy.

I therefore abandon myself to the waters of the Emerald Pool, and I am totally estranged from any thought, almost eager to stay in there forever. The fresh waters of the lake flow in unison with the merciless time that ticks and that eventually reaches the guide’s call to end the tour, which strikes me as a surprise. Inflexible Ms. Prae call us to order, and reluctantly we set off again towards the real world.

A WORD OF ADVICE

At the start of the tour:

Inform the guide of any food intolerances or special needs

Tiger Cave Temple

• While the temple apparently seems somewhat informal, it is still a sacred place; it is therefore necessary to wear appropriately respectful clothing. Shoulders and legs must be covered. For the climb up the mountain, on the other hand, looser clothing is permitted.
• The climb up the mountain is really tiring and challenging. It is advisable to evaluate one’s own abilities well before tackling it, deciding above all if one believes one can complete it within the times set by the guide.
• Monkeys can turn aggressive and, not to forget, they are wild animals. It is advisable to avoid approaching them, and above all to keep away children.

Hot Spring

• Prolonged immersion is not recommended, especially for those with pressure problems. It is better not to stay in the pools for a period exceeding twenty minutes at a time.

Emerald Pool

• The edges of the Emerald Pool are particularly slippery. Maximum attention is recommended when entering the pond.

Before becoming a mom, I was very active in hiking and kayaking. Mostly hiking I would say, so when one day a friend suddenly proposed to visit Bengoh Dam, I knew I had to go: according to the many friends who visited the area, it looks like the famous Jurassic Park environment. How exciting! I can anticipate to my readers that my previous article about Bidayuh Bangles users, the famous ring ladies, is somewhat related to this article. 

The story of Bengoh Dam

But let’s continue with my story. The Bengoh Dam was still under construction when I was a student in 2009, and I had to hike for about 7 hours to reach Kampung Semban for my Anthropology research. That village, along with the majority of the others in the area, as a result of the dam it has now been relocated to the new Bengoh Resettlement Site (BRS).

The Bengoh Dam project flooded the majority of the surrounding mountain area, as its final purpose was to supply water to the Kuching people. To be noted that Bengoh Dam is not an hydropower project: the nearest hydropower project is in Sri Aman, in Batang Ai.

A peaceful boat ride

As a result of the dam construction, the area had to undergo quite a chance. Water now covers the majority of the land, and the previous river has now become a massive lake. One of the most famous villages unaffected by the flooding is Kampung Sting, which has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area.

I decided to join my friends on this trip because I am a passionate traveler, and the Bengoh Dam is one of the newest tourist attractions here. Visitors are usually encouraged to visit Bengoh Dam in the morning, so I recommend you gather enough information and book the trip. 

Getting there

For those like us who live in the Borneo Height area, it takes a mere 30 minutes drive to reach the Bengoh Dam. We reached there at around 8.30 am, we listened to the short briefing conducted by our tour guide, then we boarded our boat at the small jetty and cruised through the man-made lake. The journey was breathtaking: we saw dying trees, mountains and small paddy farms. We stopped at a few tourist attractions to take memory photos.

We finally reached our first stop, Kampung Sting, from where we left on foot for the few minutes’s hike to the top. On the  village ridge there is a spacious, one-of-a-kind bamboo structure. We sat there and amazed at the majestic scenery of mountains covered in clouds surrounding the lake. Clouds and mist were formed by the morning rain that day, and the area resembled China, and perhaps also Vietnam. It is such a nice and relaxing place, we allowed one hour for the early lunch there.

We were so eager to explore so we boarded the boat for the next ride and proceeded to the first waterfall: Pee’an (or ‘curtain waterfall’). It took us a good 30 minutes hike to get there, and then another 20 minutes to reach Susung waterfall, where the views are magnificent. During the hike, visitors usually come across a variety of flora and fauna, including pitcher plants, exotic mushrooms and many others. There’s also this one-of-a-kind architectural bamboo bridge. It had rained a bit earlier, and the path was slippery, so we needed to be sure-footed. I advise wearing proper trekking shows in case the path is challenging. 

As we reached destination, I was amazed by the massive lianas that serve as a frame to the waterfall. We spent some time, enjoying the sight and taking shots, then returned to Pee’an waterfall, where we swam and soaked in the refreshing water until the rain caught up with us and the guide summoned us for the hike back to base. 

A lush environment

The hike to Bengoh Dam was tiring, but we were all so proud of being able to reach most must-see sights in the area. The scenery is mind-blowing, the air is clean and the relaxation after the hike is guaranteed. I advise good shoes, raincoat, plenty of water, extra clothes and mosquito repellent, as well as a good guide! 

Two are the tour options: a day-trip or a 2 Day/1 Night tour. If you are not from the area, we recommend the 2 Day/1 Night tour. Your overnight stay will be at a lovely, traditional homestay with Bidayuh features, where you can also enjoy local delicacies such as Ayam Pansuh cooked in bamboo with cassava leaves.

Summer months in Kedarnath are from mid-April until June. This season is good for traveling. You can opt for moderate woollen clothing if you are planning to travel in the summer season.

Monsoon months in Kedarnath are from July until mid-October. The climatic conditions in the monsoon season are very dangerous as landslides and downpours are an everyday thing.

Winter months in Kedarnath are from November until March. The temperatures at Kedarnath are below zero degrees Celcius and the whole Kedarnath becomes almost a desert of snow. 

Opening and Closing time at Kedarnath temple:-

Kedarnath temple opens on the Akshaya Tritiya, the end of April month, and closes on the Kartik Purnima, full moon day in November. When the temple is closed, the deity of lord shiva from Kedarnath temple transfers to Ukhimath, where it is worshipped for the next six months.

Day of Arrival: Dehradun (If you have booked your trip from Dehradun)

Arrive at Dehradun one day before your tour. Our handler will pick you from Dehradun railway station, Bus stand or airport, and transfer you to the hotel where you will take a rest and dinner after this hectic traveling. 

Day 1:- Trip to Kedarnath temple

On day 1, you will head towards the Kedarnath temple. If you have booked from Dehradun, you will leave the Sahastradhara helipad to Phata, and then you will change the chopper in Phata and fly towards the Kedarnath temple. If you have booked the tour from Sirsi, Phata, or Guptkashi, then you will leave from there to Kedarnath temple. After reaching the Kedarnath helipad, you will walk towards Kedarnath temple, which is 500 meters away, a walking distance of about 15 minutes. You can also go mounting a pony or pithu. After Darshan, you will come to the Kedarnath helipad, and we will head back to the place where our Journey of Kedarnath yatra by Helicopter has started.

Passenger Guidelines or Travel tips:-

• Carry only 5 Kg of luggage due to the limited space on the Helicopter
• Do not carry trolley bags as there is limited space in the Helicopter; try to carry soft bags or Duffle bags with essential things in them.
• Carry a medical kit with yourself because the temperature there can be quite unpleasant and cold.
• Carry Oxygen bottles with you, which is readily available in medical shops.
• Carry woollen clothes with you because the temperature there can be quite cold
• If your body weight is more than 80 Kg, you will be charged by INR 200 per extra kg
• Total passenger weight should not exceed more than 430 Kg. This is a safety measure by aviation companies.
• Share your correct bodyweight with the company; you are debarred by the company if you have told assumed or wrong body weight.
• Carry Airtel and BSNL sim, networks of that are readily available on tour.

• Children above two years of age are eligible for a full ticket.
• No Concession should be provided to senior citizens and children in the Kedarnath yatra by helicopter.
• Law of Delhi Jurisdiction shall govern the disputes of interpretation, applications or services, or any terms and conditions.
