Travel magazine and website Travel + Leisure ranked Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok as the seventh place most luxurious airport in the world. It was also rated second in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Financial information and research website Business Financing recently launched the best and worst airports in the world ranking in February this year. In the ranking, two Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, were ranked among the worst in the world according to the opinions of business travellers from around the world. The unexpected ranking prompted Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Chai Watcharong to warn Thais not to devalue the country’s main aviation hubs, saying the assessment may not be comprehensive.The spokesperson’s statement may be reasonable as Suvarnabhumi Airport managed to restore the reputation of Thailand by being ranked as one of the top ten luxury airports in the world this month.The Travel + Leisure publication revealed the names of the airports that offer passengers the most luxurious experience, based on a study by AllClear Travel Insurance, which looked at 1,800 airports around the world. The study focused on the number of lounges in the passenger terminal, designer brand shops, luxury hotels in the area and the availability of champagne and caviar before boarding. Based on these criteria, Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport was ranked seventh in the world with a score of 55 out of 100. The airport lost the most points for the availability of champagne and caviar before boarding and the number of luxury hotels close to the airport. Leaders from Agoda, Global Tix, AirBnb, Expedia and Klook took to the stage for Web in Travel’s infamous Great Debate this year – to fight it out against each other over the big question. Moderated by investor and advisor, Louise Daley, this year’s Great WiT Debate asked panellists, will AI make us less human? Timothy Hughes, Vice President, Corporate Development at Agoda, kicked off by declaring: “AI WILL make us less human because this technology will suck… we’ll throw our hands in the air, and just give up!  An AI version of me won’t be any better than the real thing – it’ll just be a clone from information that’s there about me on the internet.  I think we’ll instead just move on to the next technology…  As everything will have become a copy, everything will have been made discoverable about us.” But Darrell Chan, APAC General Counsel, at Airbnb argues that AI will simply take away everything in life that is boring, leaving MORE time for being human: “AI is just a tool.  We just want to get rid of all the mundane stuff that’s bringing down our humanity.  We as humans are meant to do more.  AI will take away the boring, making our lives better.  It’s going enhance us, augment our strength, help us find solutions.  It’ll be extension of our minds and souls.  We will merge the power of computing with power of human intellect.” Chan Chee Chong, CEO & Co-founder, GlobalTix agreed with Timothy. “When technology replaces humans, our body will merely be a piece of engineering.  We will merge.  We will be able to have all the creativity and capability we need, i.e. like learning a new language.  But we won’t even need to think, as AI will do everything for us.  So the question will become, are we then humans or are we machines?  Machines are thinking for us, giving us answers, working for us, and we are taking credit for it – just like those that use ChatGPT, hide it, and then claim all the work as their own!” Michael Dykes, Vice President, Market Management, APAC at Expedia Group, simply sees AI as a partner to humans: “Humanity is wrapped up around our ability to think abstractly, we are afraid AI will make us lose this.  And yet, we recognise the ways the technology makes our lives better.  We use tools to achieve things that we could never achieve otherwise; machines are overlapped with human ambition.  AI is being treated in a similar way to how writing was when it was first invented – people thought that it would make us lose our ability to memorise… but it turned out that it enabled us to do so much more.  AI can be our partner; The collaboration between us and AI will deliver powerful new achievements for humanity.” Commentator Martin Symes jokingly retorted: “I’m not a big fan of humans… they’re way too fraught!  When people ask me whether I think artificial intelligence will take over humanity… well, I’d be happy for any intelligence to take over humanity!  However, at the moment, AI is not being built on a diet of human wisdom, but on a flawed diet of drivel.  That diet is flawed, and it’s failing us.  It’s generating the polar opposite of intelligence, and authorities may be able to use it to control people… We need to do our bit to stop it trampling the human disposition!” Sarah Wan, General Manager, Singapore, Indonesia & Malaysia, Klook, argued that AI helps us reach conclusions quicker: “My boss recently called me into a meeting and said he’d compiled my mid-year review using ChatGPT… it was the most human conversation we’d ever had!  The year before, he’d had no time to compile my review, as he’d got too caught up in putting it all into words!  AI helps us get to the conclusions that matter faster.  AI maximises our time, leaving us more time to focus on humanity.  More time to create, to focus, and – like today – to debate.  So, would you rather live your life, or get caught in the grind of manual tasks?  I know what my answer is.” And, at the end of the debate, the audience concluded… that those arguing FOR were the winners – AI will indeed make us less human!

Bangkok earned the prestigious title of top city for digital nomads worldwide, according to a recent survey conducted by CommercialSearch, a renowned platform specialising in working and co-working spaces. The bustling metropolis outshone all its competitors in this year’s rankings of the Best Cities for Digital Nomads. CommercialSearch’s evaluation process involved assessing cities globally with populations exceeding 400,000 residents and completing data in all their metrics. From this comprehensive list, 57 cities emerged as the top contenders, with only one city selected from each country, ensuring a diverse set of large, well-connected urban centres that present outstanding choices for those embracing the digital nomad lifestyle. Affordability, Internet speed, co-working costs, fun factor, and safety were the key factors considered for the rankings. Bangkok’s claim to fame lies in its all-round affordability, combined with stellar performance in the rest of CommercialSearch’s indicators. In terms of cost, a low-season hotel room in Bangkok averages US$51 (1,750 baht), making it the fifth-most affordable among all the cities on the list. Additionally, the Thai capital boasts the fourth and sixth lowest average meal and co-working membership costs, respectively. Internet speed is not a concern either, with the city ranking fifth among all study locations, boasting an impressive 225 MB/s. Bangkok’s allure lies in its perfect blend of affordability, entertainment, and ease of access. Digital nomads can reside in the city using a renewable travel visa every three months. Areas like Silom and downtown Bangkok are teeming with both businessmen to network with and trendy co-working spaces for those seeking a change of scenery. The city’s vibrant nightlife, delectable yet inexpensive food, and hip cafes in neighbourhoods like Thonglor only add to its appeal. Moreover, with the rest of Southeast Asia easily accessible, digital nomads can explore quiet retreats away from the charming hustle and bustle of this nine-million-resident city. In second place in the rankings is Shanghai, China. Though less affordable compared to Bangkok, Shanghai boasts faster broadband Internet. However, the Great Firewall may pose challenges for digital nomads accustomed to using certain tools and online services. Nevertheless, with its status as one of China’s major hubs for business, finance, and research, Shanghai offers ample networking opportunities, provided internet restrictions do not impede day-to-day work. In third spot is Bucharest, Romania. Bucharest mirrors Bangkok in terms of its best-scoring metrics and sits between Bangkok and Shanghai regarding hotel and co-working costs. Moreover, this Eastern European gem offers a safer environment than its predecessors. Romania takes pride in offering some of the world’s fastest Internet speeds, especially when it comes to broadband, complemented by remarkably affordable subscription costs. As an added advantage, residents from numerous countries can live and work in Romania visa-free for up to 90 days, with the country recently introducing a dedicated digital nomad visa for stays of up to a year. Anecdotal stories suggest chargebacks in travel have increased since the disruption experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, new research confirms most travel companies (71%) have indeed seen growth in chargebacks over recent years, with disputes surging at a rate of around 30% year-over-year, according to the global study with airlines and travel agents. When asked to explain the rapid growth, travel companies pointed to travellers perceiving chargebacks as easier than seeking a refund (62%), increased traveler awareness of the chargeback process (56%) and the ease of raising a chargeback through a mobile banking app (42%), as the top three drivers. The study also highlighted the low ‘success rate’ travel companies achieve when challenging chargebacks. Just a quarter of travel firms see more than 60% of disputes awarded in their favour and nearly half of the firms surveyed see less than 40% of the chargebacks they choose to contest awarded in their favour. Tania Platt​, Senior Vice President, Commercial,​ Outpayce from Amadeus commented: “Our research shows travel companies are finding it hard to handle the volume of disputes they’re seeing. A requirement to invest in additional skilled resources, coupled with the difficulty to collect the travel and payments information needed to contest chargebacks are resulting in low success rates. There’s a real opportunity for the industry to take a step back and ask how it can industrialize chargeback management.” She continued: “When we look at an airline, throughout the transaction process, the airline knows if the cardholder authenticated, it knows if the payment was authorized, it knows if its T&Cs were presented and if the traveler boarded the plane. The difficult part is collating the information in a timely manner to effectively contest those chargebacks where the travel merchant isn’t at fault. Solving that problem has been a major focus for us over recent months.” More than two thirds of respondents agreed that being quickly provided with key travel and payments information, like proof of payment authorization and proof the passenger boarded the plane, relating to each new chargeback would increase their firm’s efficiency when managing chargebacks. Over 50% of the respondents were from large travel companies with >€500m in annual revenues. What is a chargeback?  Cardholders have the right to dispute a transaction by raising a ‘chargeback’ via the bank that issued their card. When this happens a standard dispute process is initiated, and the travel company has a certain amount of time to collate the evidence needed to contest the chargeback. If the travel merchant is unable to provide the required evidence in a timely manner, the funds are automatically returned to the cardholder.

Thailand is the third-best destination in the world for attracting digital nomads after the United States and Spain, according to the online resume building service Resume.io . Resume.io said in a blog post that it reached its conclusion after extracting 25,976 Instagram posts that featured the hashtag #digitalnomad and used geotagged locations to determine the most popular countries and cities. It pre-processed the dataset to ensure no spam accounts or bots were included in the sample. The top 10 nations in terms of #digitalnomad posts as of May 2023 are: United States 210,664 Spain 125,038 Thailand 124,729 Mexico 102,627 France 94,590 Indonesia 91,963 Portugal 82,998 Italy 49,304 United Kingdom 48,068 India 45,286. Roughly 40 countries now offer variations on a digital nomad visa, and most have dropped their pandemic-era entry restrictions. The study also ranked regions. For Asia and Oceania, Thailand dominated the digital nomad landscape, serving as a favourite docking point. Bangkok takes the crown as the top destination in Asia and Oceania for digital nomads, with an estimated 20,247 #digitalnomad Instagram posts. The Thai capital has the second-most #digitalnomad posts in the world, while Chiang Mai, Koh Phangan and Krabi also make the top 10 in Asia. Chiang Mai is known for its fine co-working spaces, while Krabi is more picturesque and offers easy access to some of the country’s best beaches. Koh Phangan features both unspoiled natural beauty and numerous working spots for nomads. The study found London has the most vibrant digital nomad Instagram community in Europe and the world, while New York City is the digital nomad capital of the US and North America. The Argentinian capital Buenos Aires is the most popular destination for digital nomads in South America, while Cape Town is Africa’s capital of remote work. Responsible travellers in Thailand – defined as those who are wellness-focused, culturally minded and care about environmental impact – most want to travel to Japan, according to YouGov’s latest report for the travel and tourism sector. YouGov Travel Rankings 2022: Travel brands through the eyes of Responsible Travellers is aimed at understanding how travel brands differentiate in the eyes of responsible travellers, and the brands and destinations that score higher in terms of consideration amongst this audience group. YouGov DestinationIndex measures the public’s perception of destinations on a daily basis across a range of measures. The destination rankings were compiled using Consideration scores from July 2021 to June 2022. After Japan – which had a Consideration score of 40.8% among responsible travellers – was South Korea (22.6). Switzerland, the highest-ranked European destination, came in third (21.4). This was followed closely by Singapore (18.0). The United States of America rounded off the top five with a Consideration score of 15.8. China (15.2), France (15.1) and Australia (13.0) were next, followed by Asian destinations Hong Kong (12.8) and Laos (12.6), which completed the rankings. Milieu Insight, a Southeast Asian consumer research and analytics firm, today announced findings of domestic travel plans for summer vacation across Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand as COVID-19 restrictions ease. Respondents from the Philippines and Indonesia have shown highest willingness for domestic travel. With much of the movement restrictions across Asia being lifted, the travel industry is finally opening up. Over 80% of domestic travellers in Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam have indicated a likelihood to engage with travel agency services for their domestic travel and vacation plans. Key Highlights: Highest willingness for domestic travel in the PH and ID Indonesia (89%), Vietnam (83%) and Thailand (79%) least concerned when it comes to domestic travel Travellers from Philippines (76%) are most concerned about safety of travel and destination Majority of travellers (81%) are looking to bring their family together on their next vacation. Land transport is the preferred mode of transport (76%) when travelling domestically Hotels remain top choice for accommodation across all five countries (76%), with half of travellers in Vietnam also showing preference for Resorts, and more than half from Thailand also preferring Pool Villas (54%). Most travellers are likely to use travel agency services for domestic travel and vacation plans across all 5 countries. With Philippines (82%), Indonesia (85%), Vietnam (83%) with the highest likelihood to do so. Travellers from the Philippines remain most concerned with the pandemic Travellers from Indonesia (89%), Vietnam (83%) and Thailand (79%) have expressed the least concern for themselves when it comes to domestic travel. This willingness to travel is also reflected in the domestic travel policies of these countries as there are minimum restrictions involved in their inter-state/inter-provincial travels. In February 2022, Vietnam saw a total of 9.6 million domestic travellers. One reason domestic travel has shown to be widely accepted by travellers is due to the fear of a pandemic resurgence. Travellers do not wish to be unwittingly stranded from home and work. On the other hand, we see that 40% of respondents from the Philippines remain highly concerned for their safety even towards domestic travel. Domestic travel within the Philippines is still only limited to select destinations and with restrictions (as of 11 May 2022).  Travel habits and preferences of domestic travellers in SEA When planning for their upcoming summer vacation, most travellers across all five countries are looking to unwind and reconnect with their family after two years of pandemic isolation (Philippines 83%, Indonesia 82%, Vietnam 78%, Malaysia 81%, Thailand 79%). Just recently in April 2022, Indonesia saw mudik mass migration for Idul Fitri (end of Ramadan), where 31% of the population was estimated by the Indonesian Transport Ministry to travel back to their hometowns and spend time with their extended family. Hotels remain the top choice for accommodation across all five countries, with half of travellers in Vietnam also showing preference for Resorts, and more than half from Thailand also preferring Pool Villas (54%). Family friendly destinations should look to see high popularities this summer, especially places that are inclusive towards multigenerational groups.  This could be activities like a road trip to a national park or other tourist spots in a neighbouring state, or visiting a beach resort that provides entertainment for all ages, or even taking time off to unwind from the big city hustle and bustle in a tranquil village. Travel agencies sought after even for domestic travels Despite only travelling within their home countries most Southeast Asian travellers will still engage with a travel agency to plan for their domestic travel and vacation plans. Especially those from Indonesia (85%), the Philippines (82%), and Vietnam (83%). Engaging with a travel agent may ensure a less stressful trip, creating more time and leisure for travellers to enjoy their first post-pandemic vacation with their loved ones.
