Have you ever wondered what it’s like to climb over a thousand steps with a two-year-old? I did, and I’m excited to share our unforgettable adventure to Sigiriya Fortress—also known as Lion’s Rock. For our family, every day on this trip to Sri Lanka was a new mission for out toddler, and today’s challenge was to reach the top of that imposing rock and be awed by the breathtaking landscape. The journey began with a walk from our accommodation in Kimbissa to catch the bus that would take us to the climbing site. Once there, instead of taking a tuk-tuk, we chose to stroll along a dirt track, feeling the reddish-brown earth beneath our feet, surrounded by wild scenery and the sounds of nature. What should have taken about 15 minutes turned into a leisurely 40-minute walk filled with dancing, singing, and playing with Sebastian. It was pure magic—just us, nature, and our little explorer. At the entrance, we found two lines—one for Sri Lankan citizens and one for foreigners—set amidst a lively park teeming with monkeys. After another 40-minute wait, we finally entered and began our ascent. The top of Sigiriya was hidden behind a thick cloud, hinting at impending rain, but our spirits remained high. We had a mission to accomplish, and we were determined. The stairs loomed ahead. Was Sebastian scared? Tired? Not at all. He eagerly started climbing, eager to reach the fortress’s summit. Step after step—20, 50, nearly 100—he was focused and unstoppable. At times, we had to gently place him in a carrier to protect his hips from the long climb (1200 steps!), but even that didn’t dampen his enthusiasm. We pressed on, and just as we were about to reach the final steps, two unexpected adventures unfolded. First, a mischievous monkey, from a distance, leapt toward us and snatched a sealed pack of crackers from my sport sling. Clearly, monkeys are more athletic and food-savvy than us! Sebastian found the whole scene hilarious—monkeys, food, and all. Then, just as we were processing this, rain began pouring down—our funniest moment of the day. Suddenly, Sebastian and I were jumping in puddles, splashing on the rocks, and reveling in the fortress ruins as if we were alone. Marco, caught in the rain, sought shelter with everyone else, but we didn’t mind. The rain slowed, clouds parted, and we were treated to a stunning view of the various levels of Lion’s Rock. We explored as much as possible, sliding down handrails and soaking in the scenery. Our final stop was a spiral staircase leading to a chamber with exquisite frescoes of the Sigiriya maidens—painted directly onto the rock face over 1,500 years ago. It was a perfect ending to a day full of adventure. Exhausted, wet, and slightly hungry, we made our way back to our B&B, saying goodbye to the monkeys and macaques along the way. We shared the last of our snacks, feeling grateful for the day’s adventures. Despite the unpredictable weather, we discovered that traveling with a toddler often reveals hidden resources within ourselves—resilience, patience, and the ability to find joy in every unexpected moment. Following Sebastian’s lead turned our climb into a magical family adventure, reminding us that sometimes, the best journeys are those that embrace spontaneity and the surprises along the way.

Traveling around Bali by car with my 6-year-old son, Leonardo, led us to one of the most fun-filled experiences of our trip—a day at Waterbom in Kuta, in the southern part of the island. Leonardo has visited many water parks in the past, but I must say that Waterbom stands out as truly exceptional, and it exceeded both of our expectations. The park offers an amazing kids’ area that kept Leonardo entertained for hours. With a height of 110 cm, he was able to enjoy a great selection of rides—although at 120 cm, he would have had even more to choose from. Despite this, there was no shortage of activities, and boredom wasn’t an issue for a second! From the lazy river to the splashy slides, the rides offered something for both thrill-seekers and young adventurers. The Funtastic zone, specifically designed for kids, was a hit with its water cannons, slides, and tipping buckets, where Leonardo could safely explore on his own or with others. One feature that made the day stress-free was the park’s dining options. Waterbom Bali is dotted with great food outlets that serve everything from pizza and sandwiches to more diverse and healthy options like salads and fresh juices. You won’t go hungry here! And for treats, the ice cream parlors and popcorn stalls scattered around the park were perfect for satisfying Leonardo’s sweet tooth during breaks from the water. Another nice touch is that the park operates on a cashless system. We topped up a bracelet at the entrance and were able to use it to pay for food, drinks, and anything else we needed, making everything seamless and convenient. The park is very well-organised, with plenty of lockers for storing your things and numerous clean toilets and showers easily accessible across the grounds. This made it easy for us to move around and enjoy ourselves without worrying about our belongings. The friendly staff also provided another service that we found really cool: they take photos of visitors throughout the day, logging them to a dedicated photo bracelet. We could view and choose to purchase the photos at the end of the day, which meant we didn’t have to carry our phones or cameras around, allowing us to focus purely on fun. For families with energetic kids like mine, Waterbom offers a perfect combination of thrilling rides, relaxation areas, and fun activities. Leonardo, although exhausted by the end of the day, managed to squeeze in one last activity before the park closed: a jump on the trampoline! His courage and excitement throughout the day made it one of the most memorable experiences of our Bali trip. It all started thanks to a recommendation from https://www.facebook.com/chamkhanhhoa/ – they suggested Leonardo and I should try Kong Forest Adventure Park as both the location and the experience are really worth the trip. I contacted the place and booked us in for the day after. We got picked up from our hotel in town by Mr Hoang who came on a Ford SUV accompanied by a young and affable Miss Lee, who Leonardo immediately liked. Hoang negotiated the morning traffic of Nha Trang and soon we left the busy town, passing the outskirts and dozens of nice, traditional market villages. It was not long before we hit nature. Outside, only a winding mountain road flanked by papaya, banana and mango plantations. It was a cloudy day, perfect for a mountain trip. Leonardo and I had been in Vietnam for over 20 days and had only experienced hot sunny days, scooter drives and and beach time. Nature was indeed a nice change. The road finally got smaller and smaller, and bumpier as well. Hoang informed us Kong Forest Adventure Park is about 40km from town and 20km from Hon Ba Mountain peak. Apart from nice cool temperatures, Hon Ba Mountain doesn’t have spectacular views and it is not a known tourist sport as such, but the fact that makes it worthwhile to visit is that it is where the Swiss-born French bacteriologist and doctor Alexandre Yersin chose to climb more than 100 years ago, and where he decided to live to do his pharmaceutical research. Read his story HERE. Swimming at the stream Back to our trip, it wasn’t long before we reached the entrance of Kong Forest Adventure Park. Rain started to fall as we descended the car. Hoang and Lee took us to reception, where we changed our clothes and went straight down to Suoi Nguon, a large basin fed by three streams and surrounded by boulders and small waterfalls. Despite the cloudy day and the cold water, Leonardo and I dived in and enjoyed a cool swim. Up on the hillside, a series of small cabanas host guests who come here to eat, drink and enjoy the cool atmosphere, and not necessarily to take part of the several activities on offer. In fact, Kong Forest Adventure Park is also a nice place to just go to and enjoy food and friend’s company in the midst of nature. Their restaurant serves roasted jungle pig, a local delicacy! It was Saturday, so by lunch time all cabanas were occupied by Vietnamese from Ho Chi Minh, a 4 hours drive away, families and groups of friends who had come to enjoy the Hon Ba nature. Setting the Stage for Adventure As we later ventured into the depths of Kong Forest accompanied by Hoang, who is a wealth of information about the camp and the area, we were instantly enveloped by the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape. The dense foliage, teeming with diverse flora and fauna, created an amazing atmosphere. We visited the Zip Line starting platform and the ATV headquarters, so we had an idea of what we wanted to try. They have a nice list of adrenaline-pumping outdoor activities closely tied to the nature and the environment waiting for customers to explore: Zipline Canopy Tour, ATV Tour, Hiking, Rafting, Camping. You can also stay overnight at Kong Forest: a few tepee-like tents dot the area, and there is a central common area for evening groups and BBQs under the stars. Kid-Friendly Fun: A Wholesome Family Experience What truly set Kong Forest apart was its family-friendly approach. With my 5-year-old Leonardo in tow, I was delighted to find a range of activities tailored to him as well. Leonardo was introduced to the joys of nature through a short nature walk, and the excitement on Leonardo’s face as he learned about the environment was truly heartwarming. Kong Forest provided ample opportunities to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The gentle stroll through the forest unveiled hidden waterfalls, tranquil streams, and stunning vistas. The air was filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers, and the symphony of chirping birds added to the enchanting ambiance. ATV Adventure: A Heart-Pounding Ride Eventually I let Leonardo chose the activity, and he went for ATV with hardly any hesitation at all. The ATV adventure was exhilarating. After the staff trained the whole group on the tricks of manoeuvring an ATV, we started the hard but exciting drive through rugged trails that led us deeper into the forest. The roar of the engines and the thrill of navigating the terrain provided an adrenaline rush like no other. The trails were thoughtfully designed to cater to all skill levels, ensuring an enjoyable experience for both seasoned riders and novices. We did the short version of the tour, as the long one is quite tiring and takes about 2 hours to complete. The ATV adventure left our hearts pounding, and Leonardo looks of approval made me proud of this whole Vietnam adventure I had designed for him. A Welcoming Haven The team at Kong Forest went above and beyond to ensure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and a genuine enthusiasm for sharing their sanctuary with visitors. Hoang and Lee were not only knowledgeable but also considerate of Leonardo’s needs, making us feel like treasured guests throughout the adventure. Capturing the Essence Kong Forest is more than just an adventure park; it’s a portal to a world where nature and excitement coexist harmoniously. The park owners and staff cohabit with the local mountain people of the Raglai ethnic group, and provided a temple for them and for anyone else wishing to pray in. My recent evening spent savouring the ocean’s finest treasures left me and Leonardo in awe and with a newfound appreciation for gourmet dining. Walking into Ngon Gallery, I was immediately greeted by an atmosphere of refined elegance, luxury and 5 star space. The soothing ambiance and tasteful décor in industrial design set the stage for an evening of indulgence. The Lobster Buffet was a masterpiece on its own, complete with an enticing display of succulent lobster dishes that showcased the chef’s creativity and culinary expertise. The star of the show, the lobster itself, took center stage in 4 exquisite forms. From the buttery Lobsters with Nha Trang chili sauce, to the Baked lobsters with greasy cheese, to the aromatic Lobsters with Phu Quoc black pepper sauce, every dish demonstrated a delicate balance of flavours that paid homage to the ocean’s bounty. The Grilled Lobster with garlic butter was a revelation – tender, juicy, and bursting with smoky goodness that elevated the natural sweetness of the lobster meat. But the buffet was far from a one-note symphony. Accompanying the lobster were an array of delectable seafood sides and accompaniments, more than 100 dishes made from high-class ingredients according to East and West that enhanced the overall dining experience. The selection of fresh salads, perfectly cooked seafood companions, and a variety of sauces ensured that every palate was catered to. The fusion of local ingredients and international culinary techniques was evident in each creation. The fresh sashimi and sushi are prepared by Japanese chefs with premium ingredients such as salmon, tuna, octopus, herring, oysters, mussels and more. The service at Ngon Gallery was nothing short of exceptional. Quinn was the name of our butler, and her attentiveness and genuine enthusiasm added to the overall enjoyment of the evening, especially for Leonardo, who was given first class attention. Waiters were more than happy to assist with wine pairings that complemented the lobster offerings flawlessly. The knowledgeable staff was more than willing to guide diners through the selection, ensuring that every sip elevated the dining experience. Another great detail was the Live Acoustic music, a nice detail that accompany diners in their great experience. Cam Ranh in the south of Vietnam is a great beach destination featuring a beautiful blue sea and white sand. But Cam Ranh is not all sea and sand. One of the best ways to discover the cultural and natural features of the area is to rent a scooter and to drive around. Currently, tourists coming to Cam Ranh have a great demand for motorbike rentals, as this type of vehicle is not only convenient but also economical. They offer delivery to your place, making it convenient for travellers. As I mentioned earlier, this place not only provided me with a nearly new bike, one that Leonardo chose from photos they sent me via Whatsapp. The bike in question was a Yamaha Nouvo GP 125cc, a flashy blue colour. It was via Whatsapp that they provided me an address for a laundry shop, a place where to go and sample local mangoes, the way to get to a local market, some nice nature adventure with waterfalls and trekking experience, and more. In the end, we were contacting them almost on a daily basis to ask for anything that pop to our mind. The person interacting with me had perfect English and a passion for anything local. I can easily state that they made a big difference in the way Leonardo and I lived our time in Cam Ranh and Nha Trang. Leonardo and I recently had the pleasure of staying at the exquisite Selectum Noa Resort in Cam Ranh, Vietnam, and I am utterly delighted to share my exceptional experience with travellers, especially those with kids.
