There is a distinct difference between visiting an attraction as a casual tourist and experiencing it through the eyes of an eight-year-old on a mission. During our recent family media assignment to Pattaya, in Thailand, my wife, our son Leonardo, and I had the opportunity to explore Ramayana Water Park   a destination that had been on our radar for quite some time. Leonardo is no novice when it comes to aquatic entertainment; despite his young age, he has splashed, slid, and paddled through an impressive lineup of water parks across Asia and beyond. He knows what makes a park average, and he certainly knows what makes it great.

By the end of our trip, his verdict was emphatic: Ramayana went straight to the top of his personal leaderboards.

From the exact moment the turnstiles clicked open in the morning until the final park announcement signaled closing time, Leonardo ran on 100% pure, unadulterated enthusiasm. We were literally the first family to set foot inside the gates and among the absolute last to walk out—a true testament to the endless entertainment packed within this massive tropical sanctuary.

A VIP Base Camp in a Tropical Sanctuary

Spanning an incredible 160,000 square meters, Ramayana Water Park is built on a scale that immediately commands respect. Located roughly 40 minutes from central Pattaya, the park nestles against a picturesque backdrop of rolling green hills, natural lakes, and lush valley scenery. Unlike many conventional water parks that feel like vast fields of concrete and exposed fiberglass, Ramayana has been carefully integrated into its natural surroundings. Designed around the thematic concept of a long-lost ancient city, the park is filled with subtle architectural details, stone-carved ruins, and shaded pathways lined with tropical flora.

As media guests hosted by the park, our day was elevated by the inclusion of a VIP Pass, which granted us access to a private shaded cabana. For a family planning an all-day marathon session, having a designated VIP cabin is an absolute game-changer.

Tucked neatly into a quiet, breezy zone of the park, our cabana served as our private sanctuary throughout the day. Outfitted with comfortable loungers, a cooling ceiling fan, personal power outlets, and a secure digital locker, it gave us a stress-free base camp. We could leave our cameras, dry clothes, and personal belongings safely locked away while we hit the water. Whenever Leonardo needed a quick hydration break or my wife and I wanted to step out of the sun for a moment of quiet relaxation, our private cabana was waiting—allowing us to pace ourselves for what turned out to be an eight-hour aquatic marathon.

Built for Young Explorers

One of the greatest challenges for families traveling with eight-year-olds is finding an attraction that strikes the right balance between safety and thrill. At eight, children are often too old for simple toddler splash pads, yet they may not quite meet the height restrictions—or possess the appetite—for heart-stopping, 16-meter vertical drop slides.

This is precisely where Ramayana excels. The park features over 20 world-class water slides, categorized thoughtfully by intensity. What makes it exceptionally family-friendly is that children over 106 cm can access almost every single slide in the park, with the exception of the most extreme speed traps like the Aqualoop and Free Fall.

For Leonardo, this meant a vast playground of medium-intensity descents that delivered all the excitement of a “big kid” park without feeling overwhelming. He spent hours mastering the park’s multi-lane racer slides and curved tube rides:

• The Spiral & Serpentine: Excellent, smooth-flowing tube slides that allowed Leonardo to ride alongside us in double rafts, twisting through translucent tunnels with bright visual effects.
• The River Slide: A unique hybrid ride where you navigate a series of banked turns on a tube before making a soft, splashing landing directly into the flowing currents of the main river.
• Mat Racer: A friendly head-to-head racing slide where Leonardo loved competing against other kids at random, zooming down belly-first on soft mats to see who could create the biggest splash at the finish line.

The height standards and gentle water-landing zones allowed Leonardo to build his confidence quickly, transitioning from riding double tubes with us to eagerly climbing the slide towers on his own.

The Main Event: Leonardo’s Love Affair

While the slides provided plenty of bursts of adrenaline, there was one attraction that stole Leonardo’s heart above all others: The Lazy Wavy River.

Calling Ramayana’s river “lazy” is almost a misnomer—it is a 600-meter-long continuous water journey that winds gracefully around the perimeter of an ancient hill. It is officially the longest lazy river in Thailand, and it feels more like a scenic jungle boat ride than a pool.

Leonardo was completely captivated by its design. Floating along on a single tube (or sometimes just swimming freely alongside us with his life jacket), he navigated a route filled with interactive surprises: Mystical Grottoes & Caves: Dark, cool tunnels carved into artificial rock faces featuring misty water curtains and ambient light. Geysers & Water Bubblers: Unexpected jets of water shooting from the riverbed that kept Leonardo laughing and trying to steer his tube through the spray. Gentle Waves: Periodic wave generators that created small, ocean-like swells along specific stretches of the river, turning a tranquil float into a playful bobbing adventure.

We lost count of how many laps we completed around the 600-meter loop. For Leonardo, the Lazy River wasn’t just a place to relax between slides; it was an ongoing adventure zone where he could float, splash, dive, and explore to his heart’s content.

Culinary Delights & Cashless Convenience

A non-stop day of swimming, climbing towers, and battling waves burns calories at an astonishing rate. Fortunately, Ramayana’s approach to food and beverage services is designed to be as seamless and enjoyable as its aquatic attractions.

Seamless Wristband Credit System

One of the most frustrating aspects of visiting a water park can be managing money while wet. Ramayana solves this entirely with a cashless RFID wristband system. Upon arrival, guests can load credit onto their wristbands using cash or card at the front desk or top-up kiosks. Whenever Leonardo wanted a cold bottle of water, a fresh fruit smoothie, or an afternoon ice cream, a simple scan of the wristband completed the transaction in seconds. Any unused credit on the wristbands is fully refunded at the end of the day, making the entire experience effortless.

High-Quality Culinary Variety

The food offerings at Ramayana far exceed standard park fare. Rather than limiting guests to basic fast food, the park boasts multiple themed dining locations and food stalls scattered throughout the grounds: The Main Lake Restaurant: A expansive dining hub serving an extensive selection of authentic Thai dishes (such as fragrant Pad Thai, savory green curry, and grilled chicken satay) alongside international staples. Western Favorites & Pizza: For younger diners whose appetites lean toward familiar comfort food, the park offers freshly baked, wood-fired style Italian pizzas, juicy burgers, and crispy chicken tenders. Fresh Fruit & Snack Stalls: Positioned near the main pool areas, these stalls served icy cold coconuts, sliced local mango, watermelon, and fresh fruit smoothies—the perfect light snack to keep an active eight-year-old hydrated and energized under the tropical sun.

We enjoyed a relaxed lunch at a shaded outdoor table overlooking the central lake, marveling at how refreshing it was to enjoy genuinely flavorful, high-quality food inside an amusement park setting.

Safety, Hygiene, and more…

From a parental standpoint, what impressed my wife and me most was the rigorous attention to safety and hygiene evident throughout the park.

Ramayana employs over 100 internationally certified lifeguards who are stationed strategically at every slide entrance, landing pool, wave pool, and along the entire length of the Lazy River. Their vigilance was constant—monitoring child heights, ensuring proper raft posture, and maintaining clear spacing between riders. Furthermore, the water throughout the park is filtered using state-of-the-art multi-stage purification systems utilizing crystal-clear groundwater from the park’s own deep wells, making it clean enough to meet drinking standards.

It is also clear that Ramayana’s management is dedicated to constant improvement. As we walked around the expansive property, we noticed dedicated zones where ongoing landscaping work and new facility developments were taking place. The park continues to expand its footprint, constantly adding fresh features, green recreational areas, and enhanced family amenities to ensure that return visitors always have something new to discover.

When traveling as a family, the best days are the ones where time seems to disappear—where screen time is forgotten, energy levels remain high, and laughter is the default setting. Our day at Ramayana Water Park was precisely that.

For my wife and me, the private cabana, delicious local food, and lush natural scenery made for a surprisingly relaxing day out. But for Leonardo, it was pure magic. From his triumphant runs down the medium descents to his endless laps around the Lazy River, Ramayana delivered an unforgettable adventure that firmly established itself as his favorite water park in Thailand.

Alma Resort Cam Ranh is poised to put scenic Cam Ranh on the cultural map with a new extravaganza celebrating Vietnam’s rich heritage, traditions and folklore with contemporary flair. From July 5 this year, Alma’s vast outdoor amphitheatre will host “The Stage – Alma Show”; “a cross-cultural collaboration between Vietnamese and Korean creatives” entailing four daily performances that each cater to up to 400 spectators.

The 70-minute “Alma Show” makes for a visual marvel that pays homage to Vietnam’s “five elements of nature” earth, water, fire, wood and metal. The entertainment line-up features magicians, dancers, water puppetry, special effects, a flash mob, Ao Dai fashion show and more for all ages.

The spectacle involves audience interaction and opens with dancers bringing the vanquished Champa Kingdom’s “Apsara” dance to life in tribute to the Cham people’s long history with the local area.

The stories behind Vietnam’s five elements are told in short yet spectacular segments. After a short water puppet show underpinned by the elements ‘water’ and ‘wood’, ‘earth’ is depicted by dancers and magicians gathering silks to craft a colossal lotus flower. ‘Fire’ is marked in fiery style, with a magician performing a fire sword show before the dramatic rescue of a dancer in a large cage that bursts into flames. Following a mesmerising Non La (conical hat) dance, a contemporary take on the element ‘metal’ encompasses all sorts of visual effects during the flash mob and elegant Ao Dai fashion parade.

The Alma Show will be staged twice per night from 6pm and 8pm by 24 dancers and magicians Jacky (Haesung Kim) and Bui Huu Thien under the stewardship of acclaimed executive directors and producers Jin (Hyukjin Cho) and Terry (Byongkok Jung) of Vietnam-based company The Stage VN.

Jin’s impressive resume includes directing and producing the Dana Show and directing the opening ceremony of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Terry was the chief director of the Dreams Come True Magic Tour and Chuncheon Lake Fairy Festival.

Meanwhile “The Magic and Water Puppet Show”, totalling 50 minutes, will be offered twice daily from 11am and 3pm. As its name suggests, the show includes 30 minutes of traditional water puppetry, by 10 professional puppeteers manoeuvring puppets in chest-deep water, and 20 minutes of “magical water-themed illusions”.

The show portrays village life, farming scenes, folklore, and mythical legends symbolising Vietnam’s patriotism. ‘Thánh Gióng’, about a young boy who grows into a giant hero and rides a flying iron horse to defeat invaders, and the ‘Emperor Lê Lợi’s and the Magical Sword’, involving the gods granting Le Loi a magical sword to liberate Vietnam, are among the show’s highlights.

The show is directed by the 2014 world champion in puppetry, Nguyễn Tiến Dũng, the Vietnam National Puppetry Theatre’s artistic director.

Waterbom Bali

Traveling around Bali by car with my 6-year-old son, Leonardo, led us to one of the most fun-filled experiences of our trip—a day at Waterbom in Kuta, in the southern part of the island. Leonardo has visited many water parks in the past, but I must say that Waterbom stands out as truly exceptional, and it exceeded both of our expectations.

The park offers an amazing kids’ area that kept Leonardo entertained for hours. With a height of 110 cm, he was able to enjoy a great selection of rides—although at 120 cm, he would have had even more to choose from. Despite this, there was no shortage of activities, and boredom wasn’t an issue for a second! From the lazy river to the splashy slides, the rides offered something for both thrill-seekers and young adventurers. The Funtastic zone, specifically designed for kids, was a hit with its water cannons, slides, and tipping buckets, where Leonardo could safely explore on his own or with others.

One feature that made the day stress-free was the park’s dining options. Waterbom Bali is dotted with great food outlets that serve everything from pizza and sandwiches to more diverse and healthy options like salads and fresh juices. You won’t go hungry here! And for treats, the ice cream parlors and popcorn stalls scattered around the park were perfect for satisfying Leonardo’s sweet tooth during breaks from the water. Another nice touch is that the park operates on a cashless system. We topped up a bracelet at the entrance and were able to use it to pay for food, drinks, and anything else we needed, making everything seamless and convenient.

The popular lazy river

The park is very well-organised, with plenty of lockers for storing your things and numerous clean toilets and showers easily accessible across the grounds. This made it easy for us to move around and enjoy ourselves without worrying about our belongings. The friendly staff also provided another service that we found really cool: they take photos of visitors throughout the day, logging them to a dedicated photo bracelet. We could view and choose to purchase the photos at the end of the day, which meant we didn’t have to carry our phones or cameras around, allowing us to focus purely on fun.

Leonardo enjoyed Waterbom Bali to the full

For families with energetic kids like mine, Waterbom offers a perfect combination of thrilling rides, relaxation areas, and fun activities. Leonardo, although exhausted by the end of the day, managed to squeeze in one last activity before the park closed: a jump on the trampoline! His courage and excitement throughout the day made it one of the most memorable experiences of our Bali trip.

Overall, Waterbom Bali is a well-thought-out, family-friendly destination that offers a mix of excitement, comfort, and fantastic service. We left with happy memories and a promise to return the next time we’re in Bali. If you’re traveling to Bali with kids, I highly recommend dedicating a day to this incredible water park!

Ahead of Earth Day in April and on the heels of Meliá Hotels International being named one of the most sustainable companies in the world, the Spanish hotel group is running Meliá Sustainability Week this week, shining a light on eco-initiatives that its hotels & resorts have undertaken.

Here are some of the highlights from the growing group’s properties in Southeast Asia.

Increasing biodiversity in Thailand and Vietnam

Meliá Chiang Mai kicked off a forest restoration project in partnership with the Doi Suthep Nature Study Center and the Forest Restoration Research Unit in 2022 to help restore the tropical forest in Northern Thailand. Their efforts have covered an area of more than seven acres and they have actively contributed over 4,350 trees, including important native species, to the area.

INNSiDE by Meliá Bangkok Sukhumvit, in Thailand’s capital, is also balancing its central city location with projects that prioritize the earth. Through their GREENSiDE project they partner with Bangpu Nature Education Center for tree planting activities, with their volunteer staff planting over 100 mangrove trees so far.

In Thailand’s south, Meliá Koh Samui is enhancing green spaces within the property and decreasing erosion. So far volunteers have added an additional 40 trees to the property.

In nearby Vietnam, Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort runs a Carbon Offset Program, offsetting guests’ travel emissions through tree planting initiatives. The seaside resort has also introduced more nature-based, educational experiences that highlight local ecology and conservation efforts.

Meliá Koh Samui

Creating a 360-degree food economy, minimizing food waste, and local sourcing

Meliá Chiang Mai is embracing sustainability and promoting healthy eating with its ‘360° Cuisine’ concept. In partnership with SEED farm, Meliá Chiang Mai runs a sustainable farm and harvests organic fruit, vegetables, and herbs for its restaurants. They also work closely with local farmers such as the Rong Khum Farm, sourcing free-range eggs for breakfast at The Level and organic San Pa Tong Jasmine Rice for Mai Restaurant and Bar and SUPHA BEE FARM, a local honeybee farm in Mae Rim. In their circular system they have sent back more than 3,000 kg of food for compost and fertilizer since starting the project in 2022 and over 600 kg of cooking oil has been used to produce diesel fuel from renewable resources.

Meliá Chiang Mai

At Meliá Phuket Mai Khao, the team has gotten creative with the island’s most famous fruit, the Phuket Pineapple. The cleaning team uses a natural detergent made from pineapple peel, and pineapple tops are the main table decorations throughout the property. Like Meliá Chiang Mai, the Phuket property also has its own organic vegetable garden as do several Meliá hotels including Meliá Vinpearl Cam Ranh Beach Resort, Meliá Ba Vi Mountain Retreat and Meliá Ho Tram Beach Resort. INNSiDE by Meliá Yogyakarta has its own fruit and vegetable garden, growing such produce as passion fruit, melon, chili, and bananas.

On Phu Quoc Island, off the southwest coast of Vietnam, Meliá Vinpearl Phu Quoc turns food scraps into soil nutrients for its outdoor plants. INNSiDE by Meliá Yogyakarta processes its eggshell waste into powder fertilizer for plants and vegetables.

Meliá Yangon isn’t letting the property’s central location dampen its farming ambitions, as well, and the hotel has its own organic vegetable garden located on the third floor.

Sol by Meliá Benoa Bali and Gran Meliá Jakarta in Indonesia are managing food waste through the Scholars of Sustenance program, an initiative in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines designed to address food inequity and ensure that disadvantaged communities are getting nutritious meals. Through this partnership they are providing hundreds of meals per month using food that may otherwise be wasted. Both properties work to minimize food waste throughout their operations but when there is an excess it isn’t wasted.

Supporting those in need in the local community

The team at Meliá Koh Samui supports the Samui Special Needs Foundation through Roses for Hope, an artistic project where the children supported by the foundation create cardboard roses that are sold in the restaurant with proceeds going back to the worthy cause. The hotel has also been supporting Ban Plai Laem School in renovating the school premises, including installing solar lighting, painting and maintenance to help create a rich learning environment.

Meliá Hanoi has recently embarked on several outreach initiatives including organizing a fun day and gifts for the kids at Phuc Tue Center, which provides support and education to children with autism and intellectual disabilities; and providing donations to Hanoi‘s Care Centre for Children with Disabilities and the Thuan Thanh Wounded Soldier Nursing Center. Meliá Hanoi, VinaCapital Foundation and Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund also worked together to organize a workshop on vocational skills for female ethnic minority students from all over Vietnam, who gathered in Hanoi to participate in an Empowerment Meeting.

INNSiDE by Meliá Yogyakarta

Meliá Purosani Yogyakarta has joined global cleaning products manufacturer Diversey’s Soap for Hope program. The hotel recycles hotel soap into new (sterilized) soap which is then packaged and sold as souvenirs in the hotel. Soap sale profits go to the Reachout Foundation, which supports various community empowerment programs. The Indonesia-based hotel also started a coffee brick initiative where the hotel processes used coffee grinds into charcoal/coffee bricks which are then used as fuel for barbecue theme dinners and events at the property.

In Malaysia INNSiDE by Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras and Meliá Kuala Lumpur, partnered up in December to visit Pusat Kebajikan Amal Jian An, a local welfare center, where they distributed essential goods and enjoyed games and performances ahead of Christmas.

The Meliá Yangon team are also actively involved in community programs such as Linen for Life, where they made 4,000 masks by upcycling old bed sheets and unusable uniforms into fabric, and through visiting local elderly homes and youth centers to provide support.

More digital and less plastic at properties

Meliá Hotels throughout the region are increasingly going paperless with necessary information and menus available via QR code at such properties as Gran Meliá Nha Trang, Meliá Phuket Mai Khao and INNSiDE by Meliá Kuala Lumpur Cheras.

Gran Melia Jakarta Eco-friendly grass straws

Eco-friendly grass straws and paper straws have become the norm and can be found in drinks at Meliá Vinpearl Hue, Meliá Vinpearl Danang Riverfront, and Meliá Makassar among most other hotels in the region. Plastic bottles are becoming a thing of the past at each property too. Meliá Makassar is the most recent convert having switched to glass bottles in December 2023. Gran Meliá Jakarta has also eliminated all plastic water bottles in guest rooms and meetings and moved away from plastic straws, and single-use disposable amenities opting for refillable dispensers for toiletries instead. Plastic keycards are being updated to bamboo keycards at properties such as Meliá Makassar.

Global recognition

The highlight of the Ambassador Dinner Cruise evening was undoubtedly the dinner. We indulged in a lavish feast with two menu options: International cuisine, a selection of characteristic style cooking from many nations around the world; and Thai cuisine, highlights on casually prepared dishes with strong aromatic components and a spicy edge. Ambassador Dinner Cruis style is to create a recurring theme and change it every 2 weeks, and that particular week was dedicated to Thailand.

The variety of dishes served was impressive, catering to diverse tastes, including Leonardo‘s more selective palate. The waitresses were incredibly considerate, offering child-friendly options and chatting with Leonardo to make him feel at home. The fact that my child, who can be a picky eater, devoured his meal was a testament to the quality of the cuisine.

Entertainment onboard was equally engaging for all ages. From live music that had my child tapping their feet to mesmerising views that left us both in awe, there was never a dull moment. The crew went above and beyond to ensure everyone was comfortable and entertained throughout the cruise.

The costumes were very unique

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Halong Bay, the sense of serenity and tranquility was palpable. This all changed when we transferred to the 4th floor Sundeck to enliven the night and enjoy an evening of music and dance. The stage first featured live music by the Filipino band. This followed by an upbeat DJ remix and hot dance performance by models and professional dancers. But the cherry on the cake was the appearance of the Thai ladyboys cabaret and dance. It was a fascinating and sizzling entertainment experience that my boy and I will not forget.

Theme parks may not be to every traveller’s taste. But Sun World Ba Na Hills − the European-themed recreational complex in the Trường Sơn Mountains, about 30km from Danang – certainly draws the crowds. That’s because it offers every visitor, of all ages , an entertaining day out in cool climes.

Ba Na Hills was formerly a popular vacation spot of the French, complete with villas and a resort. It fell into disrepair – until it was developed into the popular theme park it is today. Families visiting Danang with kids should certainly visit, as its many activities and amusements will keep children happy. But friend groups or solo travellers will also enjoy going. Here are  suggestions for things to see and do …

Savour stunning views from the award-winning cable-cars

The only way up to Ba Na Hills is via the cable-cars, so your entry includes a round-trip. CNN ranked this infrastructure among the 10 most impressive cable-car systems in the world, and it’s won more than one Guinness World Record besides. There are various cable lines and stations, depending on where you want to reach. Want to start at the famous Golden Bridge? Take the Hoi An (05) ground station. Whichever one you choose, you’ll be rewarded with a picturesque ride boasting incredible, 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see as far as Danang and the sea.

Stroll and stop for selfies

At the top, wander the French Village for photo opps aplenty. It has everything you’d expect from a medieval village – think a town square, cute cafes, a cathedral and fountain. It looks realistic, so as you walk the cobbled streets and hear the French music playing, you’ll feel transported to Europe of yesteryear. Pose beneath archways, below balconies, beside vintage-looking bikes … or anywhere there, really, for your next memorable profile pic.

Walk Vietnam’s most iconic bridge

Want to feel like you’re skipping through clouds on a golden ribbon? See the Golden Bridge, which you’ve no doubt already admired online. The 150-metre-long bridge, which has two giant hands holding the walkway, has inspired many imitations worldwide. Most recently, Ian Markiewicz − visual effects supervisor for the Netflix series “The Sandman”, based on the Neil Gaiman comics – said the bridge in the opening scenes was inspired by the Golden Bridge.

Note: This architectural marvel gets busy. To capture a shot without other tourists in sight, go early.

Tour the beautiful gardens 

Want to take a romantic stroll among landscaped gardens? Hop on the one-of-a-kind funicular to get to Le Jardin d´amour. It comprises nine different gardens designed in different styles. There’s a garden maze, a giant chessboard, and loads of hedges, balustrades and blooms for capturing beautiful pictures.

Enjoy thrilling entertainment

Kids (and adults alike) can get their kicks at the enormous Fantasy Park entertainment area, divided into three floors. Enjoy the video arcades on Level One (‘Thrill Zone’), where you can also walk through the mirror maze or ride the bumper cars. Watch a film at the 3D, 4D and 5D cinemas on Level Two (‘Spirit of Adventure’). Alternatively, there’s a 3D, 360-degree mega-cinema on Level Three (‘Mystery World’), for an immersive experience. Looking for a real thrill? Brave the 29-metre drop-and-twist tower – a ride that’s not for the faint of heart. It was inspired by two classic adventure novels − “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”− so the whole ride feels like coursing through a story full of surprises. Another fun one is the outdoor Alpine Coaster, a roller-coaster with brakes that you can ride slowly or leave to race up to 40km/h.

Marvel at the figures in the wax museum 

Admire the work of Italian artists at the Wax Museum, where you’ll see hyper-realistic wax figures of celebrities from many fields, such as sport and entertainment. Pose for a picture with singer Taylor Swift, former US President Obama, footballer David Beckham, martial art legend Bruce Lee, and others. They may not be real people, but they certainly look like them. In addition, you’ll learn about the painstaking process of creating these lifelike figures.

See the spiritual sites

Vietnam is synonymous with spiritual structures adorning mountain tops. Catch your breath away from the crowds at the Linh Ung Pagoda. At 1,500 metres above sea level, it offers fantastic views. It also boasts one of the biggest Buddha statues in the land, which sits serenely on a five-metre wide circular base, and is 27 metres tall. Other spiritual attractions include the Linh Phong Zen Monastery and the Holy Mother Shrine.

Go wine-tasting

The only part that remains from when Ba Na Hills was a French resort is the Debay Wine Cellar. It was built deep into the mountain in 1923, so that wine could naturally be stored at temperatures of between 16°C – 20°C. Learn how wine is produced, and sample some varietals. There’s also an annual wine festival during May.

Take a tea break with a view

Vietnam’s centuries-old tea culture is well known. If this is your beverage of choice, stop at the Tru Vu Tra Quan Tea House for a fresh cuppa. It’s built in a traditional Vietnamese style, and is surrounded by soothing scenery.

Play a round of golf 

At the bottom of Ba Na Hills there’s a par 72, 18-hole Championship golf course designed by golfing pro Luke Donald. With non-stop greens, water features and the surrounding forest, this is one of Vietnam’s most attractive courses. The best views are from the tee box at the par-3 12th hole.

Going to Ba Na Hills? Dress to potentially experience four seasons in one day. During the rainy season (September-October), bring an umbrella. The place gets packed in summer, so buy tickets before to avoid queues. Enjoy festivals? Several are held here annually, such as the flower festival, carnival, and winter festival.

Son Tra Mountain

Son Tra Mountain, also known as Monkey Mountain, is a breath-taking national park in Danang that stands at 693 metres above sea level. Locally known as the Son Tra Peninsula, the winding roads surrounding prove to be a popular spot for motorcycling while hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the verdant jungles and also spot rare species such as the red face monkeys. Linh Ung Pagoda is also set on Son Tra (Monkey) Mountain, which is a prominent attraction in Da Nang for housing the tallest statue of the Goddess of Mercy Quan Yin. Built atop a lotus-shaped platform, there are a total of 21 miniature Buddha sculptures within the beautiful, 67-metre-tall, white statue.

Dragon Bridge

The Dragon Bridge measures 666 metres in length, making it the longest bridge in Vietnam. A popular spot for photographers, the 6-lane bridge crosses the Han River and is constructed in the shape of a golden dragon, which locals believe symbolises power, nobility and good fortune. While it’s a magnificent sight at any time of the day, Dragon Bridge is particularly cool – and busy – during weekends as it’s illuminated with colourful LEDs and it breathes fire and spits out water from 9 pm onwards (on Saturdays and Sundays only).

My Khe Beach

My Khe Beach boasts a 20-mile stretch of white sand that’s approximately 6 km east of Danang. Named by the American troops who visited during the Vietnam War, it’s considered to be one of Vietnam‘s most picturesque beaches. Hosting a number of high-end resorts and seafood restaurants, My Khe Beach is also a popular spot for sunbathing, fishing, snorkelling, jet-skiing, and surfing. Visitors can also check out numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue Imperial City, and Phing Nga Caves, all of which are easily accessible via bus.

Marble Mountains

Marble Mountains are a cluster of 5 limestone and marble hills within Hoa Hai District, about 9 km south of Danang. Named after natural elements, the peaks are individually known as Thuy Son (water), Moc Son (wood), Hoa Son (fire), Kim Son (metal) and Tho Son (earth). There are also a host of 17th-century Buddhist sanctuaries and pagoda temples dotted across the mountains, where locals pray and have their fortunes told. A must-do for any first-time visitor to Danang is climbing the steps to the top of the Marble Mountains, where they can enjoy spectacular views across Non Nuoc Beach or My Khe Beach. Alternatively, there’s an elevator service available for those unable to walk to the top.

Phap Lam Pagoda

Phap Lam Pagoda is set within a 2-storey building along Ong Ich Khiem Street, featuring plenty of trees, manicured gardens, and beautiful Buddhist sculptures. Despite its location within bustling Danang city centre, the atmosphere here is very serene with locals praying in the morning and monks going about their daily lives. The courtyard of the pagoda houses a 1.1-metre-high seated Buddha statue and brass statues of the Goddess of Mercy (Avalokitecvara) and Dai The Chi Bodhisattva. Visitors can also enjoy vegetarian cuisine at local restaurants and food carts surrounding Phap Lam Pagoda.

Da Nang Cathedral

Danang Cathedral is one of the most unique catholic churches in Vietnam, featuring a pink-painted edifice, stained-glass windows, and an imposing bell tower topped with a rooster weathercock. Built by the French in 1923, it’s also known as Con Ga Church (Rooster Church) and serves the local Catholic community to this very day. The cathedral is located along Tran Phu Street, about a 15-minute walk from the iconic Dragon Bridge. Entrance to Danang Cathedral is free of charge and its high tower offers a stunning view of the city, Han River, and verdant mountains.

Hai Van Pass

Hai Van Pass stands at 500 m above sea level, making it the highest pass in Vietnam. It’s located on the border between Thua Thien-Hue Province and Danang City, where you can enjoy panoramic views of verdant mountains and clear blue skies as well as Danang City, Tien Sa Port, Son Tra Peninsula, and the South China Sea. The pass also hosts a dilapidated French-built fort that was later used as a bunker by South Vietnamese and US armies during the Vietnam War. Due to its sudden curves and blind corners, Hai Van is also notorious for its fair share of accidents – look out for small altars set along the roadside which are dedicated to perished victims.

Non Nuoc Beach

A 20-minute drive from Danang City, Non Nuoc Beach boasts international acclaim as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Featuring soft white sands, a gentle slope, unpolluted waters and mild waves, visitors can do plenty of leisure activities such as sunbathing, jet-skiing, and surfing whilst enjoying local seafood dishes. Non Nuoc Beach takes up 5 kilometres of Hoa Hai Ward’s coastline, ending at the foot of Marble Mountains, which hosts ancient pagodas, sacred caves, and handicraft villages.
