Not long ago, luxury travel and kids were rarely seen in the same sentence. However, times have changed as the demand from parents wanting their little ones to enjoy the same five-star experiences as them grows and grows. My 5-years-old Leonardo and I are not snooty travellers: we have stayed in one, two or three stars that were great also. But for the start of this adventure trip, I wanted him to experience the best, so for our Chiang Mai stay I picked Meliá Chiang Mai. Meliá Chiang Mai opened in 2022, the first five-star opening in the city since the pandemic, and was born from a major facelift to one of the highest buildings in this colourful northern Thailand city of historic charms and cultural attractions. Its location is amazing, not far from the banks of the Ping River, a 15 minutes walk to the walled old city with its famed temples and alleyways, and with one of the city’s biggest night bazaars on its doorstep. While we had a rented car, the hotel location made it convenient for us to just get out and walk around the town. As I expected from a Meliá property, the unique Spanish ambience is ever-present. Yet, with its spectacular interiors designed by Bangkok firm PIA, Meliá Chiang Mai has a definite sense of place and exudes the mystic splendour of northern Thailand, paying homage to the town’s features and to the culture and handicrafts of local hill tribes. The hotel is overall modern, but it uses Thai culture as its inspiration in its arcs, walls and furnitures. Its decor includes Thai themes, luscious oversize installations that reference silversmithing, weaving and Lanna (Northern Thai) architecture, metal artistic lanterns and woven basketry. Leonardo loves museums, and his exact words after he roamed about the reception area were: “Papa, this hotel is like a museum”. I was pleased. The next mention goes to their awesome services. Meliá sense of hospitality includes an emphasis on personalised service and guests’ well-being. We were met by professional and enchanting smiles and greetings by local staff from the moment we entered the dazzling lobby, and this feeling stayed right up to the moonlit rooftop bar on the 22nd floor. Indeed, the staff was beyond fantastic, friendly, helpful and so patient with such a small kid; I was truly amazed. They really cared that we had a wonderful experience, and we did. A 50-inch wall-mounted flatscreen TV facing the huge king bed, USB ports and a good wifi connection completed the job. Next, my kid wanted to check the facilities I had so often mentioned in the previous weeks: the kids pool and the kids club. The hotel’s kids and teens club Kidsdom offers a program packed with activities such as Thai boxing, umbrella painting, plaster model painting, arts and craft with recycled materials and origami (which Leonardo booked but never got to attend as he was so busy in the pool). It comprises numerous sections including a ‘gaming zone’ offering Chess, Monopoly, Uno, Jenga, Tic-tac-toe, table football, and other games, and a ‘teen club zone’ featuring a drawing board, water colours, colouring pencils and crayons, and painted plaster dolls. In addition to a ‘mini club’ replete with Lego, rocking horses, indoor sliders, a ball house and wooden block puzzles, Kidsdom is also home to a library zone, TV zone and nap studio. A paradise for Leonardo, and it was hard to take him away. But I used the pool as bait, and it worked. Adjacent to the hotel’s large outdoor swimming pool on the second floor, the hotel has a shallow watery playground home to two water slides, a rain curtain, water fountains and a giant tipping bucket. Leonardo being a good swimmer, he loved to switch between the adult and the kids pool, and this was a real blessing for his father, who could finally enjoy a generously sized pool with navy blue tiling, as well as a cocktail or three at the Tien Pool Bar. It is worth mentioning that Meliá Chiang Mai is offering a ‘Family is Everything’ package, with all details HERE. But let’s talk about food and drinks now. Laan Na Kitchen restaurant on the ground floor serves breakfast from 6.30 to 10.30am, as well as Mediterranean cuisine (including freshly-made churros and tortilla!) but with interesting Thai twists.  To the left of the lobby is the Ruen Kaew Lounge, where you can get afternoon tea along with the usual drinks and pastries. On the 21st floor is The Level Lounge, the hotel’s executive lounge, where Leonardo got spoiled with mousses, smoothies and all sort of kid’s snacks, as well as enjoying the pretty amazing views and the staff girls’ continuous attention. The Level Lounge cohabits with Mai Restaurant & Bar, serving fine dining Thai cuisine derived from northern Thailand’s Lanna kingdom, but with subtle Mediterranean influences (open 6 to 10pm). To be noted that much of the produce is sourced from the nearby ORI9IN organic farm. I enjoyed an exceptional tasting menu there, but I will talk about that in a different article. Meliá Chiang Mai opened in 2022, the first five-star opening in the city since the pandemic, and was born from a major facelift to one of the highest buildings in this colourful northern Thailand city of historic charms and cultural attractions. Its location is amazing, not far from the banks of the Ping River, a 15 minutes walk to the walled old city with its famed temples and alleyways, and with one of the city’s biggest night bazaars on its doorstep. While we had a rented car, the hotel location made it convenient for us to just get out and walk around the town.

As I expected from a Meliá property, the unique Spanish ambience is ever-present. Yet, with its spectacular interiors designed by Bangkok firm PIA, Meliá Chiang Mai has a definite sense of place and exudes the mystic splendour of northern Thailand, paying homage to the town’s features and to the culture and handicrafts of local hill tribes. We were met by professional and enchanting smiles and greetings by local staff from the moment we entered the dazzling lobby, and this feeling stayed right up to the moonlit rooftop bar on the 22nd floor. Indeed, the staff was beyond fantastic, friendly, helpful and so patient with such a small kid; I was truly amazed. They really cared that we had a wonderful experience, and we did.

But let’s talk about food and drinks now. Mai The Sky Bar

Last but not least is the amazing, the hotel’s jewel in the crown, the one and only Chiang Mai’s premier Mai The Sky Bar, which seems to be the only one with a 360 degree stunning views over the Ping River or Doi Suthep mountain and its sunsets. This very trendy city haunt has two bars connected by a glass bridge and it is open 4pm to midnight.

Meliá Chiang Mai promotes sustainable tourism through a variety of means, including having its own organic farm, from which its restaurants get much of their produce (any leftovers go back as compost, too); using biodegradable packaging; utilising refillable containers and dispensers in rooms; and providing drinking water in glass bottles.

 

Our verdict is clear: Meliá Chiang Mai features all the five star extras you’d expect: the gym, the spa, the bars, the kids facilities, all coupled with excellent service and amazingly trained staff. This is a welcome addition to an increasingly cosmopolitan city, one that looks set to attract business and leisure travellers. The only negative factor? With all the entertainment for kids and adults alike, you have very little reason to want to leave the hotel at all, which would be a real shame since Chiang Mai, the jewel of the north, is a Thai city well worth exploring!

Built in 1905 and reconstructed in 2002, the temple invites one and all to celebrate the Birthday of Tam Kung (23 May) with lion dances, Chinese opera and a street parade. Another great way to enjoy the best of Quarry Bay is to follow up a Happy Hour with a night hike along Sir Cecil’s Ride, a short and mostly flat jaunt to Braemar Hill that combines the serene beauty of nature with the glittering lights of the city below. Finally, while you’re in the area, don’t forget to post your own IG of the infamous residential complex known as Monster Building, made famous in movies like Ghost in the Shell and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

A flamboyant trattoria inspired by Italy in the 1960s, La Favorita has introduced Brunch Della Famiglia (available weekends and public holidays, 11:30am–2:30pm) complete with a choice of antipasti, primi and secondi including the must-try Sexy Seafood Tower with lobster, oysters, mussels and seafood salad. The HK$398pp brunch (plus HK$198 for Classic free-flow or HK$298pp for Champagne free-flow) has all the classics from burrata and bolognese to slow-roasted pork belly and eggplant parmigiana. Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of Brunei, a country that is waiting to be discovered, and with a tourism industry that still has a lot to develop despite the high growth margins. We were a bit concerned about our visit, as at the time of our stay, Brunei had just reopened but only partially after a long closure due to well-known causes. However, it was thanks to our choice of stay, Badi’ Ah Hotel, and to the attention of all the staff and the professionalism of the Hotel Manager, Mr. Darren Tan, that we were able to spend the 4 days we had planned in a pleasant, comfortable and relaxing way inside a structure that is a guarantee in the sector. Badi’ Ah Hotel is an excellent three-star hotel, located a stone’s throw from the city center – only 15 minutes walking to reach the iconic Omar Alì Saifuddien Mosque – and along an important avenue you will find Istana Nurul Iman – the Palace of the Light of Faith – residence of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei. Badi’ Ah Hotel can guarantee its guests excellent value for money thanks to good quality services at a times that business is getting back to normal. Of its 55 rooms, all equipped with air conditioning, LCD flat screen TV, safe, free internet access and water kettle with complimentary tea and coffee, 25 are Standard rooms, furnished in a simple but amply comfortable with spaces that do not impose any particular sacrifice; 22 are Superior, more spacious and with slightly more refined furnishings; 8 are Executive Deluxe, the rooms of the highest category, with an even greater surface area than the two previous types, equipped with two queen-size beds, a comfortable sofa and, for those who need to work, two shelves close to the wall where guests are able to open a laptop. Badi’ Ah Hotel also offers three large halls dedicated to banquets, conferences or events, all equipped with internet connection and properly adaptable to the various possible types of events, factors that make it a preferred choices in the business sector. An outdoor swimming pool and a space dedicated to children complete the recreational facilities of the property. The hotel’s food & beverage is still conditioned by the recent reopening and by local regulations that do not yet allow to offer buffet meals. Nevertheless, breakfast was the classic exception that confirms the rule: the buffet breakfast was limited in its “mise en place”, yet is was earthy and with a good variety of food. The property’s independent restaurant, the Bristodeli, offers good local cuisine and, thanks to a Thai chef, Mr. Somboon, excellent Thai cuisine too, though at the time of our visit a regular lunch and dinner service has not yet been reactivated. Bristodeli can be accessed directly from the hotel lobby. In general terms, Badi’ Ah Hotel certainly proved to be a valid and brilliant structure for our stay in Bandar Seri Begawan despite the limits due to the recent reopening of both the hotel itself and the country, where many tour operators and some important attractions are still closed. Personally I can only confirm that the added value of the structure is to be found in the staff and above all in its Manager, to whom we regularly contacted for what we needed. Mr. Darren organised our tours for us, successfully finding an adequate balance between price and quality. He also gave us all the information needed to move around the capital of Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan, giving us the feeling that he was doing all this out of pure passion. In short, it was an important point of reference. We visited a country that is gradually reopening to tourism, and we felt a bit like pioneers in this almost ‘out of time’ visit. Yet, we have felt interesting potentials in this country which, despite the richness of its subsoil, still maintains its humility and its personality, not yet conditioned or misled by mass tourism. And in this context, Badi’ Ah Hotel occupies an important role, because it fully reflects in the efficiency and simplicity that characterises, in the tourism sector, the entire country. Paul Bakery & Cafe is a small and compact cafe in Krabi that stands out in the form of homemade bakery. I made my way there on a sunny mid-week morning, accompanied by my colleagues from Fantasia Asia travel service’s office.  Entering Paul Bakery & Cafe is a treat in itself. The interior of the shop is decorated in a very cute way: it sports a French ambience, with signature black-dominant minimalistic style eminent throughout the café, paraphernalia exposed on the walls and dried lavender bunches hanging from a high ceiling. With its variety of corners to sit at, Paul Bakery & Cafe is inviting, simple yet trendy, rustic yet modern. A cool atmosphere, nice soft music and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee complete the job.  But the forte at Paul Bakery & Cafe is its delicious French pastries and cakes. Dessert fans should not miss the wide variety of cakes: cheesecakes, mousse cakes, fruit cakes, tarts, fresh cream, brownies, and many more. Traditional European patisserie recipes are matched with new recipes that are developed to cater to all palates. Paul brings creativity into everything he bakes, and that, in my opinion, is the key to his success.  Paul’s array of baked goods ranges from buttery, flaky croissants and cinnamon rolls, to custardy canelés and sweet macarons. Apart from the usual suspects in the bakery and cakes menu, Paul creation and experimental recipes are different every day as he aims at giving his clients an always unique experience.  Back to my breakfast, both coffee and croissant finally reached my table, the croissant being served with fork and spoon and a blackcurrant jam. Having Italian origins, I immediately moved away fork and spoon, ignored the good-looking blackcurrant jam on the plate, grabbed the croissant and gave it a big bite… the Italian way! Let me tell you this is one of the closest croissant to European standards I have ever tasted in Asia. During a chat to Paul, I discovered that he supplies Amazon Coffee and other important establishments in town and beyond. Paul’s history dates back to his 20s, when he lived in several European countries as a youngster. Back in Thailand, he learned the tricks of bakery in Bangkok.  Asides from making delicious pastries, Paul Bakery & Cafe also specializes in a café menu which includes all sorts of coffee, smoothies and teas. Paul upholds his high standard using the best sourced ingredients, like what they use in Europe. It is his dedication as well as his attention to details that are pushing Paul Bakery & Cafe towards one of the best bakeries you can find in Krabi. Paul Bakery & Cafe is a small and compact cafe in Krabi that stands out in the form of homemade bakery. I made my way there on a sunny mid-week morning, accompanied by my colleagues from Fantasia Asia travel service’s office. 

Entering Paul Bakery & Cafe is a treat in itself. The interior of the shop is decorated in a very cute way: it sports a French ambience, with signature black-dominant minimalistic style eminent throughout the café, paraphernalia exposed on the walls and dried lavender bunches hanging from a high ceiling. With its variety of corners to sit at, Paul Bakery & Cafe is inviting, simple yet trendy, rustic yet modern. A cool atmosphere, nice soft music and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee complete the job. 

The daily offering is amazing

But the forte at Paul Bakery & Cafe is its delicious French pastries and cakes. Dessert fans should not miss the wide variety of cakes: cheesecakes, mousse cakes, fruit cakes, tarts, fresh cream, brownies, and many more. Traditional European patisserie recipes are matched with new recipes that are developed to cater to all palates. Paul brings creativity into everything he bakes, and that, in my opinion, is the key to his success.

Paul’s array of baked goods ranges from buttery, flaky croissants and cinnamon rolls, to custardy canelés and sweet macarons. Apart from the usual suspects in the bakery and cakes menu, Paul creation and experimental recipes are different every day as he aims at giving his clients an always unique experience.

Back to my breakfast, both coffee and croissant finally reached my table, the croissant being served with fork and spoon and a blackcurrant jam. Having Italian origins, I immediately moved away fork and spoon, ignored the good-looking blackcurrant jam on the plate, grabbed the croissant and gave it a big bite… the Italian way! Let me tell you this is one of the closest croissant to European standards I have ever tasted in Asia.

During a chat to Paul, I discovered that he supplies Amazon Coffee and other important establishments in town and beyond. Paul’s history dates back to his 20s, when he lived in several European countries as a youngster. Back in Thailand, he learned the tricks of bakery in Bangkok. 

Asides from making delicious pastries, Paul Bakery & Cafe also specializes in a café menu which includes all sorts of coffee, smoothies and teas.

Paul upholds his high standard using the best sourced ingredients, like what they use in Europe. It is his dedication as well as his attention to details that are pushing Paul Bakery & Cafe towards one of the best bakeries you can find in Krabi.

It was with trepidation that I accepted Thomas proposal to cover the yearly MyBaloon Fiesta in Kuala Lumpur.  Hot air balloons, I though! I did not hesitate a minute and contacted the Public Relations person for the event, Miss Ezrin Balqis, in order to get some details on the event as well as to arrange accommodation for my stay. Considering that Asian Itinerary had previously covered some of the activities of the famous Malaysian balloon sisters, great articles that I had read with much interest – READ THEM HERE -, I immediately thought that the best angle to cover the event would be to discuss the idea of women behind handling these giant balloons, something usually related to men. I then arranged an interview with Izzati Khairudin, the first child of a man passioned about hot air balloons, who managed to pass on this passion to her daughters. Yes, not just one but two. Izzati and Atiqah Khairudin have a hot air balloon license and are indeed the women pioneer in this sport in Malaysia, the land of hibiscus. Hot air ballooning is the oldest form of aviation in history, and even though accidents involving hot air balloons are rare, this sport is still considered as amongst slightly risky sports together with scuba diving and winter sports. Apart from that, for a woman to get involved in this sport is very rare too, and looking at these two young women, it is hard to believe they have ballooned in the sky so many times in their lives. So the first question I threw at Izzati was sharp: AI – “What do you think about Malaysian society perception on women involved in dangerous sports? Do you think people underestimate them or not?” Izzati was not at all shocked and her answer came our after a big smile painted on her fresh face: IZZATI – “I believe it is a matter of opinion. I feel that in Malaysia females are treated equally, I truly believe so as I have never felt handled differently than people would handle a man. Same in ballooning. When I was training in Spain, people treated equally as well. You know, if you want to be a pilot, you need to pilot your own balloon. Nobody is going to do it for you.” AI – “Do you actually think hot air balloon is a dangerous sport?” IZZATI – “Yes, I believe so, however it is really fun. I mean it’s not so hard. You take your license, you practice your landings and you get all the important knowledge needed to fly a hot air balloon, which is a lot. Because the thing with hot air balloon is that you can’t navigate the way, can’t really chose where the balloon goes and things like that. Therefore, when we fly a balloon we always need to look out for things like power lines, lamp posts and any other obstacles. And when we need to land, we really need to understand wind conditions and weather patterns.” AI – “So what would you say are the main challenges behind hot air balloon?” IZZATI – “In terms of flying, there are of course challenges. For instance, once I was flying in Penang and I couldn’t find a suitable field to land so I improvised and landed in a muddy pineapple plantation. Though it was not the most ideal place to land, the operation turned out safe. Hardest are palm oil plantation, and we have plenty here in Malaysia. Generally, landing spaces are very limited, but the good thing about this country is that morning weather is usually tame, so tricky landings are possible.” AI – “What is your sweetest memory about balloons?” IZZATI – “I think my best memory is doing it with my sister: we did our license together and we flew a lot together. Ballooning is my life, and so are my ballooning fans and my company. We are a very small team and we are very close to each other. Our office is like our second home. I work a lot with young people with very bright mind, very accommodating and committed like the AKA balloon team.”  AI – ”What message would you give to those who wish to try piloting a hot air balloon?” IZZATI – “My message is: go for it. It took my sister and I a while to get our hot air balloon license, it was a long 7 years process from the initial idea to finally get it materialized, collecting necessary funds etc. Having some savings is important, so you can buy your own balloon and do not have to rely on renting one.” AI – ”Plans for the future?” IZZATI – “We are mainly planning towards setting up official training for hot air balloon pilots so that Malaysians do not have to travel out of their countries to get a license. Abroad, the cost of getting a license is about 50,000 Malaysian Ringgit (about 10000 euros).” I said goodbye to Izzati and went on enjoying my morning at Putrajaya, observing amazing balloons taking off and flying away. I love Izzati commitment towards what she loves the most, she should be an inspiration to all women. There is nothing better than doing what you desire the most in the world. Nestling itself in the scenic neighbourhood of Desa ParkCity, about 25 minutes from Kuala Lumpur city centre, the 9th MyBalloonFiesta was back with its aptly themed “Balloon in the Park” as the hot heat rose March 10th to 12th this year. It was early morning when I made my way to Desa ParkCity – http://desaparkcity.com – a lovely green residential area developed around a lake. It was a Saturday, and residents jogged, walked dogs, took kids for walks or enjoyed coffee at the local shopping area. The sun rose and a few of the balloons were being tested, ready to take people on tethered rides from 7,30 am. I got to ride on a colourful red and pink balloon, and when the pilot started the fire to inflate it, heat came to my head and warmed my scalp so much I had to duck! Two huge gas tanks fueled the balloon from inside the wicker cabin, and up we went. The feeling was great: we were lulled by a fresh breeze during the soft ascent, and from the top the view of the surrounding area was incredible. I only got to ride a mere 10 minutes, but it was enough to understand the enjoyment of flying on a hot air balloon! Down at the park, I enjoyed a gourmet buffet breakfast while listening to a quality live jazz performance. Small tents were provided for media, VIP and balloon club members who enjoyed the sight of balloon inflation, as well as activities like zumba classes and a challenging limbo dance. Desa ParkCity venue from the sky

After eight consecutive years of hosting the event in Putrajaya, MyBalloon Fiesta (formerly Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta) annual event has finally found itself closer to the heart of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur! Nestling itself in the scenic neighbourhood of Desa ParkCity, about 25 minutes from Kuala Lumpur city centre, the 9th MyBalloonFiesta was back with its aptly themed “Balloon in the Park” as the hot heat rose March 10th to 12th this year.

Whilst the entire city of Singapore can largely feel Chinese, Singapore’s traditional Chinese quarters retains some of its original charm and are commonly called Singapore Chinatown. To be noted that this area is also known as Niu Che Shui in Chinese and Kreta Ayer in Malay, names that mean “bullock cart water” and that originated from the carts that used to haul in drinking water. Chinatown covers an extended area south and east of the town, with the area between Pagoda Street and Smith Street modeled up considerably for tourists. Here, the area is a sharp contrast to the rest of the city, with low rise buildings and culture bursting out onto the streets. Also, in contrast with predominantly Hokkien Singapore, the dominant Chinese dialect is Cantonese. Eat eat eat Needless to say, Chinatown is the place where to get plenty of Chinese food, although there you can also find plenty of Korean restaurants and a choice few European fine dining establishments. Club Street on Friday and Saturday is closed from 7pm to 1am and converted into public pedestrian space, allowing people to enjoy a vibrant street life, encompassing a wide range of flavours from across Singapore, China and the rest of Asia. This is indeed one of the best places to eat cheap, tasty and authentic local food in Singapore. Whatever the weather, the food area is covered with a high-ceiling glass canopy shelter and an integrated cooling system, making Singapore Chinatown a perfect all-day dinging spot, rain or shine. There are areas that blend traditional Chinese heritage with contemporary threads, quirky cafes and chic restaurants, mainly catered for expat and yuppies. In other areas you can eat in the several eateries and watering holes, hawker stalls and restaurants housed in restored shophouses. Walk around and enjoy the fragrant smells of traditional cuisine. Sample quintessential local delights like the famous carrot cake, while you get lost in the alleys of Singapore Chinatown looking for that most authentic Singapore dining experience. Whilst the entire city of Singapore can largely feel Chinese, Singapore’s traditional Chinese quarters retains some of its original charm and are commonly called Singapore Chinatown. To be noted that this area is also known as Niu Che Shui in Chinese and Kreta Ayer in Malay, names that mean “bullock cart water” and that originated from the carts that used to haul in drinking water.

Chinatown covers an extended area south and east of the town, with the area between Pagoda Street and Smith Street modeled up considerably for tourists. Here, the area is a sharp contrast to the rest of the city, with low rise buildings and culture bursting out onto the streets. Also, in contrast with predominantly Hokkien Singapore, the dominant Chinese dialect is Cantonese.

Needless to say, Chinatown is the place where to get plenty of Chinese food, although there you can also find plenty of Korean restaurants and a choice few European fine dining establishments. Club Street on Friday and Saturday is closed from 7pm to 1am and converted into public pedestrian space, allowing people to enjoy a vibrant street life, encompassing a wide range of flavours from across Singapore, China and the rest of Asia. This is indeed one of the best places to eat cheap, tasty and authentic local food in Singapore.

Whatever the weather, the food area is covered with a high-ceiling glass canopy shelter and an integrated cooling system, making Singapore Chinatown a perfect all-day dinging spot, rain or shine. There are areas that blend traditional Chinese heritage with contemporary threads, quirky cafes and chic restaurants, mainly catered for expat and yuppies.

You can wander at random and spend a considerable amount of time checking these shops, some of which sell quite expensive antiques and traditional Chinese clothes aimed more at the locals. Products include bales of fine silk, traditional handicrafts, gold and jade jewellery; there are several goldsmiths, medicinal halls and teahouses, a bustling mix of old and new.

Getting there

You could easy spend a few days wandering Singapore Chinatown narrow streets and visiting local monuments. To get right in the heart of the action, take North-East MRT line and get off at Chinatown station, taking Exit A (Pagoda Street).
