Sary’s impressionist paintings frequently portray Cambodia’s traditional rural life—rice fields, farmers, monks and village scenes—capturing the deep connection between people and the land. His expressive brushstrokes and use of vibrant colour bring the countryside to life. Many of his most recent works adopt a bird’s-eye perspective, offering fresh viewpoints on familiar landscapes and inviting reflection on humanity’s relationship with nature.

A selection of Sary’s acrylic-on-canvas paintings is now on display at the hotel and available for purchase. Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor has welcomed a new artist in residence ahead of the launch of a new exhibition of artworks, as the iconic 93-year-old luxury hotel in Siem Reap, Cambodia continues to spotlight talented Khmer creatives. Teang Borin, popularly known as ‘DinArt’, is an audacious, self-taught artist whose work captures and exalts the essence of Cambodia’s rich religious and societal heritage.

His latest exhibition, inspired by the majesty of Khmer royalty and the distinguished colour palette of the Raffles Royal Doorman, features vivid, brilliant hues often set against a stark backdrop.

“The central concept revives the historical tradition of Khmer royalty, specifically focussing on the Royal Guards’ pantaloons. Historically, the colour of a king’s attire would change to correspond with the day of the week—a vibrant, visual reminder of the calendar and its spiritual significance,” said curator Nat Di Maggio of the local Tribe Art Gallery.

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor will host DinArt for a ‘meet-the-artist’ event on Dec. 18 (starting at 6 p.m.) that includes a gin and canape pairing priced at $25. The exhibition of DinArt’s works can also be experienced on a private guided tour led by the resident artist or by Di Maggio.

The luxury heritage hotel on the doorstep of ancient Khmer archeological sites in Cambodia, will display Channy’s paintings in its elegant public areas and award-winning restaurants following an official launch event with the artist on Saturday, Jan. 18, and they will remain on view until the end of April. Channy’s exhibition, titled ‘Wild Spirits, Sacred Symbols’, is part of the 93-year-old Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor’s ongoing art and cultural series.

Channy is known for his striking acrylic paintings, particularly those depicting birds. His artworks serve as a social commentary on man’s impact on the environment and have been praised for their unique aesthetic properties. Channy, a former hunter, says he cultivated a deep respect for wildlife as he came to better understand the threats animals face in the modern world. This shift in perspective, he says, influences his artistic expression.

Channy has been spotlighted by an international tour and travel operator in its ‘Local Legends’ programme, allowing visitors to travel to the remote village of Wat Avtea, south of Siem Reap, to tour Channy’s home studio and see a gallery showcasing his works.

The acclaimed Khmer fine-dining restaurant 1932 at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap has unveiled exclusive new tasting menus as it continues to elevate and redefine haute gastronomy in Cambodia. The hotel’s Khmer tasting menus were launched last year as a way to introduce diners to the distinctive flavours of the Southeast Asian cuisine. The popularity of the dining experience prompted 1932 to update the menus with several exciting new dishes available this month.

Some highlights from the new menu include Bangkorng Takeo made with Takeo freshwater lobster, Khmer thermidor sauce, morning glory and oyster sauce; Num Krouk, a Khmer rice cake with sweet and sour sauce, and lime; and Sach Ko Lok Lak, a Tajima striploin with Kampot pepper, crudite, turmeric and garlic fried rice.

“The dishes on the new Khmer tasting menu at 1932 feature the freshest, locally grown, seasonal ingredients, ensuring an outstanding representation of Cambodian flavours at their very finest,” said Executive Sous Chef Dorn Doeurt, an expert in authentic Royal Khmer cuisine and modern Khmer gastronomy, who designed the menus.

The tasting menus are categorized by decades/periods, including the 1930s (“The Reign of King Sisowath Norodom” priced at $90++), 1950s (“The Grand Renaissance” priced at $60++), 1960s (“The Golden Age” priced at $70++) and 1990s (“The Raffles Grand Legacy” priced at $100++).

“Siem Reap is a tourist dragon that has been asleep for the last few years; now’s the time for the dragon to wake up,” said Nat Di Maggio, days ahead of the reopening of TRIBE Art Gallery in Siem Reap.

Like the majority of Cambodia’s Temple Town, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, visitors virtually disappeared overnight and business plummeted, causing many to shut down.

Siem Reap’s art scene, which was heavily reliant on tourist sales, was no different. In January 2021, Nat bid farewell to the art space in Kandal Village that TRIBE had called home since opening in December 2018 to begin operations in Phnom Penh.

However, after three years in the capital, Nat is moving back to Siem Reap to embark on a fresh chapter in a new space on the riverside. And he is confident that as Chinese New Year approaches, ushering in the year of the dragon, this year will bode well for Siem Reap – and is when the “sleeping dragon” will reawaken.

Nat, who ran an art center in London, had always dreamed of owning his own art gallery. In 2018, his dream came true when he and his late husband, Terry McIlkenny, took early retirement and moved to Siem Reap. On December 15, 2018, they opened TRIBE in the thriving creative hub of Kandal Village, with three Cambodian artists and five international artists on their books.

Over the next couple of years, business was booming at the gallery. During that time, TRIBE increased its portfolio of artists to represent 20 Cambodian, two Singaporean, three Thai, five British, and four American artists. He said each of his exhibitions features at least 75 percent Cambodian art.

“Then in 2020, Covid-19 appeared and Siem Reap, this huge tourist dragon, went to sleep,” Nat said. At the end of that year, he was contacted by Rosewood Phnom Penh, who asked him to put on a temporary exhibition.

From there, he received requests from a string of luxury hotels, including Sofitel and Hyatt, and managed to secure sales for the artists from all walks of life, including affluent Cambodians, expats and the Chinese.

Returning to TRIBE’s roots

“In my mind, I always wanted to move back to Siem Reap when it came back to life and started to recover,” Nat said, adding that during his time in Phnom Penh, he would return to Siem Reap every couple of months.

“It was always so quiet. Then I went last year and thought, “It’s going to be a 10-year recovery to get back to what it was. I’m just going to take the plunge”, and I decided to move back.”

On February 8, TRIBE will reopen in the 1961 building on the southwest of Siem Reap River. An art piece itself, the Van Molyvann-designed building will host exhibitions, art classes, art weekends, and art retreats.

“It’s the year of the dragon next year for Chinese New Year, and the huge Siem Reap dragon went to sleep. I think it’s time that the dragon woke up. The year of the dragon represents hope and prosperity, and in the art scene we’re always hopeful that things will take off.”

Two remarkable artists, Nak Noy and Prom Ponlue, are kicking off the exhibition with their paintings displayed in the hotel’s exquisitely appointed Kravan Room for a period of one week, before being moved to other public areas of the hotel.

Nak Noy’s artwork embodies a dreamlike escapism, inviting viewers to abandon reality for new realms. His unique style stems from his vivid imagination. Born and raised in Siem Reap, Nak Noy began making art as a child after he admired his sister’s drawings.

Prom Ponlue’s works aim to breathe life into forgotten culture and feature a strong connection with nature and his beloved homeland. Within his world, art is the only horizon, and he welcomes viewers to experience his unique visions full of peace, freedom and love. Prom Ponlue and Nak Noy are both represented by Tribe Art Gallery and curator Nat Di-Maggio. Other acclaimed artists will be featured as the year continues.

The worldwide organisation dedicated to the noble art of Champagne sabrage will host two exclusive events in Cambodia next month with 5-star Raffles hotels, including at Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh and, for the first time ever, at Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Siem Reap.

Confrérie du Sabre d’Or is internationally renowned among Champagne aficionados for the ritual, which involves severing the top of the bottle with a sword. Champagne sabrage dates to the era of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who is said to have cherished a drink of Champagne from bottles newly opened with a military saber after every winning battle.

The noble art of Champagne sabrage will be celebrated at two Raffles hotels in Cambodia

Raffles is the only establishment in Cambodia where one can experience the official ceremony and has scheduled two exclusive events in March. Raffles Hotel Le Royal’s Restaurant Le Royal on Friday, March 17 will serve a special four-course French menu with Champagne pairing priced at $145++ per person. Each guest is invited to saber a bottle of Champagne and officially join the Confrérie du Sabre d’Or. This will mark the second time the ceremony has been held at the hotel; the first occurred in 2019.

Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor on Sunday, March 19 will host the ceremony for the first time ever, with a luxurious brunch at Café d’Angkor including live music. The event is priced from $55++ per person or $95++ with free flow Champagne.

Established more than 200 years ago by stylish young French military officers, the traditional sabrage ceremony will be conducted by the Grand Master of La Confrérie du Sabre d’Or in the historic Raffles properties.

The master holds a bottle of Champagne by the heel, then slides his or her sword up and down the neck of the bottle to warm it. Then, in a single smooth movement, the master accelerates his or her arm forward, sliding the saber firmly along the neck of the bottle and—hopefully—decapitating the ring, or top neck of the bottle, and sending a gush of Champagne all over the floor and sometimes fellow guests.
