I often participate to cacao ceremonies in different events, but the one I attended at BaliSpirit Festival 2019 was definitely the best life experience! Hundreds of people reunited with outstanding artists in the main pavilion to drink lots of cacao. I can still feel the huge energy and emotion that arise when uniting such a big group of people. Ceremonial cacao is raw chocolate, which when consumed leads to a release of endorphins and an opening of our hearts. The Spirit of the Cacao is a Master Plant Teacher and is also known as the Cacao Goddess. She is gentle and nurturing, but at the same time very powerful. When we use Cacao we are often invited to work with forgiveness and acceptance, leading us to increased love for ourselves and others. The main stimulant found in high grade ceremonial cacao is Theobromine (which means ‘the food of the gods’). The amount of caffeine in good ceremonial grade Cacao should be very low. You will find that cacao will give you a great burst of energy, and will at the same time help you focus and do deep inner works such as meditation and shamanic journeying. If you drink Cacao regularly, it will improve your memory, increase your serotonin levels and therefore help with low level depression, and it can help you if you suffer from high blood pressure. Cacao is also considered to be the best creativity enhancer and is used by authors, artists, yoga and meditation teachers, dance therapists, tantric practitioners. The list goes on. It is a super food that contains a wide range of vitamins, minerals and 40 times more antioxidants than blueberries. It is especially high in iron, magnesium and calcium, and is wonderful for women to drink during their moon time. Cacao is gentle in a way that it lets YOU decide if you are ready to let go. Maybe just listening to other peoples’ stories will help you make the necessary changes in your lives. The aim of a Cacao Ceremony is to empower you to release what doesn’t serve you any longer, and helps you see and re-connect with what is truly important in your life. Cacao compared to other medicinal plant is easy to integrate. With Cacao we can laugh, sing, dance, be creative, think, do yoga, and most importantly, share our love and joy with each other. In Mayan culture, Cacao was used ceremonially to commune with the Gods. Today, we continue this sacred traditional by drinking Cacao to reconnect with the deep wisdom of our own precious beings. In fact, this ceremony invokes guided meditation, breath work, sacred song, creativity, joy and release. At BaliSpirit Festival 2019, Cacao was not the only component, though quite powerful in itself. The main power was coming from the people: a big group of yogi, artists, healers and common people with a great heart and energy. A mix of music and dance which connected all together and created a positive vibration. Thank you BaliSpirit Festival, you have the power to let people touch the greatest and most powerful feeling of unconditioned love.

I have always had a special relationship with the sea, and I believe life on Earth originated from the oceans, so it is no surprise that one of the most relevant items in my wish list was always to become a Dive Master (DM). Finally, today I can say: Mission Accomplished!! At the beginning, it was just a passion for underwater life, coupled with the challenge of pushing human limits. I first became a Rescue Diver, with 80 diving in my LOG, some done in different countries but most achieved in Thailand. Using modern equipment that allows you to breathe underwater like a fish is both exciting and scary at the same time, so my wanting to become a Dive Master had to do with being best trained underwater and ready to deal with any dangerous circumstance. I took the Dive Master training course with PADI-certified dive shop Kon Tiki Krabi (www.kontikithailand.com), based in Ao Nang, Krabi province, Thailand. This coastal location has direct access to several islands and is 42 km north of Koh Phi Phi national park, which is a great advantage. I enjoyed every single trip we had from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi islands, all amazing!!! The Dive Master training is divided into six main parts: 1- Knowledge development, sub divided in different section as physics, physiology, equipment, diving skills, environment, decompression theory and dive planner. The final test comprises 120 questions with 4 multiple answers for each, and a few calculations. 2- Stamina Assessment, consisting of a chronometer swimming and snorkelling test. The funny part was that I had to train quite a bit before getting the maximum score. The first time I gave a try to the snorkelling test it take me double the time allowed to achieve the minimum score! 3- Practical Skills, consisting on setting up a dive site like a boat, searching underwater lost material and recovering it, mapping a diving site assigned by the instructor, passing an underwater stress test and also setting up logistic for a deep dive. 4- Conducted workshops, which technically include every scenario you may have to face once you are a certified Dive Master, like guiding divers under water, taking people that have never been underwater diving (also called Discovering Scuba Diving, or DSD) and being a snorkelling guide and a free-dive guide. 5- Practical assessment, consisting of supervising and assisting diving instructors during their teaching different programs like Open-Water or Advance Divers Certification, Rescue Program, and different and interesting underwater skills. 6- First and Second Emergency response, as to be a certified Dive Master you must be able to rescue guests underwater and on surface by being able to provide oxygen or reanimate an injured person. The knowledge gained during this course is great and extremely useful. It took me about 45 days between pool and open sea dives to accomplish every requirement, as well as days and days of self study. A typical boat-day for a Dive Master Training Course starts by gathering and setting up equipment together with colleagues at the dive center, and bringing it to the boat by truck. After the boat is set and the equipment ready, customers join us on the boat’s upper floor, where one of us gives them the briefing for the day. At this time the boat takes off towards the diving site, and while the customers enjoy fruit, fizzy drinks and coffee, the boat staff goes on a meeting in order to organise the day. Tasks are many, and we observe sea current weather and water tides in order to decide the best diving location for the day, taking into consideration customers’ level and requests. The day then goes by very fast, between water activities, social relations and guests briefings. Food served aboard consists of breakfast (this depends on the number of activities in a specific day) and a buffet lunch, both served on the upper deck between diving activities. There is also a well-stocked library at the lower deck. The end of the day is always the most peaceful time: the guest are tired – some take a nap on the boat’s comfortable benches -, the staff takes care of the boat and the instructors work on documents. The way back to Ao Nang softly ends with a marvellous sunset, with the waves rocking the boat and inducing passengers to a semi-conscious sleep. On the horizon line, the amazing islands of the Krabi province dot the expanse of water. At some point, the captain slows down the pace of the engine and we are rewarded by a pod of dolphins swimming close to the boat. So, what are the main memories I take home from this amazing experience? Well, for sure the priceless knowledge I have become acquainted with, the feeling of full days out at sea and underwater, and the amazing colleagues at Kon Tiki Krabi. I earlier said there are six main sections to complete in order to qualify as a Dive Master. I actually forgot the seventh section… it is called a snorkel test. I did not quite understand well what my colleagues meant. They said it is a practical and required assessment as the end of my training, and it happens in a pub! Right tonight…. I better go now. I must complete my Dive Master. See you underwater!

I am all geared up!

The Dive Master training is divided into six main parts:

1- Knowledge development, sub divided in different section as physics, physiology, equipment, diving skills, environment, decompression theory and dive planner. The final test comprises 120 questions with 4 multiple answers for each, and a few calculations.

Tanks are ready, being a Dive Master is a meticulous task

2- Stamina Assessment, consisting of a chronometer swimming and snorkelling test. The funny part was that I had to train quite a bit before getting the maximum score. The first time I gave a try to the snorkelling test it take me double the time allowed to achieve the minimum score!

3- Practical Skills, consisting on setting up a dive site like a boat, searching underwater lost material and recovering it, mapping a diving site assigned by the instructor, passing an underwater stress test and also setting up logistic for a deep dive.

A group of fish swim freely around a wreck

Lionfish close up

My training as Dive Master was mainly spent on this boat

I cannot recall how many times, during my various plane journeys from Europe to Asia and back, I looked down from the small airplane window and marveled about the vast and never-ending deserts that cover most of the Middle East. These huge amounts of sand bear no trace of civilization. I have often wondered about the feeling of being on an endless stretch of dry, sandy land. When this year I had the opportunity to visit Iran, I immediately included in my itinerary interesting cities and archeological sites like Persepolis, but you can bet one of my main goals was to go to an area of desert, hopefully one not touched by mass tourism. And to have a real Iran outback experience. You must know that when I travel abroad, especially in a country or area I have not visited before, I enjoy nature, I try local food, but most of all I love to meet local people and get to know about their culture. I am so eager to learn about their life experiences but also to hear their point of view about the world and how they see the civilized world that seems so far from there, especially in a remote area of a country whose citizens have a hard time to be allowed to travel. After a few days inside Iran, I found myself in Yazd, one of the most ancient cities situated in the heart of the country. I was exploring my phone map on satellite mode, looking for an interesting desert to visit or a mountain to hike, when my attention was drawn to a specific point in the map, pretty far from cities, very close to high mountains and surrounded by desert and desolated land. I couldn’t believe it when, in the middle of nothing, a pin was indicating Hamid Rahmani Tours and Homestay. I searched this name on Google and the information I got – https://hamidrahmanitours.wordpress.com – indicated exactly the kind of experience I was looking for. After a quick phone exchange of information with Hamid, we fixed the pick-up time and location for the following day! We left Yazd at 3pm, shortly after Hamid picked me up from my hostel. The plan was to travel by car for about 350km south-east and get to his homestay, situated in a small village in the Kerman province, at 2000 meters above sea level. During the journey, Hamid stopped at one of the several Iranian natural beauties: the Bafq Desert. The Bafq desert is a sandy desert 120km south east of Yazd; it is impressive how nature created this enormous mass of sand that contrasts with the landscape, making it look like a big sandy island in the middle of rocky mountains. Hamid gave me free time to wander while he took a nap, so I took the opportunity and climbed to the top of the biggest mountain, enjoying the sound of the wind while observing a magic sunset that stained the whole area with colorful lights. Moments like these make me aware how small human being is if compared with this great planet. I then spent the night at Hamid Home Stay, and the morning after I climbed on the roof of his traditional house to admire the neighborhood around me: rows of houses traditionally built, some of them dating up to 500 years ago. The village is a mix of ancient houses and renovated dwellings, but in the end, all are built respecting the traditional architecture. What an explosion of energy I got from this morning view. The fresh and clean air made me hungry, or maybe it was the wonderful reviews I had read about the delicious food Hamid’s wife prepares for the guest. My expectation was fully satisfied, and during the following two days I had the pleasure to taste her local fresh food, each meals a different dish cooked with love and care. Hamid offered me several tours during my stay. I was to discover the real life of a village so far from ‘civilization’, I met local people, I was introduced to Islam religion inside a 200 years old mosque, I slept in an old but nicely renovated traditional house, I climbed rocky mountains reaching stunning views 3000 mt above sea level and I learned about how global warming is changing and devastating entire communities in this part of the globe that year by year sees its water disappear. But the nicest experience I had in Iran was riding a motorbike in the desert along desolated lands and mountains through roads created somehow centuries ago. Maybe it’s because I am a motorbike lover, or perhaps because my heart expands in front of so much unlimited nature. During the way, I inhaled the smell of herbs that only grow at this altitude, and the dust I left behind me gave me that feeling that I was looking for. I am going to miss Hamid family and I treasure so much the experience I gained during this tour. I am so glad I had the chance to experience a real Iran outback experience!

Kerman rail station

Vaste espanse of the Iran desert

Hamid Homestay roof view

I then spent the night at Hamid Home Stay, and the morning after I climbed on the roof of his traditional house to admire the neighborhood around me: rows of houses traditionally built, some of them dating up to 500 years ago. The village is a mix of ancient houses and renovated dwellings, but in the end, all are built respecting the traditional architecture. What an explosion of energy I got from this morning view.

Local people at a remote village

My Honda devil on the riding day

But the nicest experience I had in Iran was riding a motorbike in the desert along desolated lands and mountains through roads created somehow centuries ago. Maybe it’s because I am a motorbike lover, or perhaps because my heart expands in front of so much unlimited nature. During the way, I inhaled the smell of herbs that only grow at this altitude, and the dust I left behind me gave me that feeling that I was looking for.

The hiking experience put a smile on my face

I am going to miss Hamid family and I treasure so much the experience I gained during this tour. I am so glad I had the chance to experience a real Iran outback experience!

If you ever pass by Shiraz, in Iran, make sure you don’t miss Persepolis. Persepolis is a palace for peace, a place where visitors from all walks of life, by looking at its splendid and glorious architecture, can imagine the world as it was long before Jesus Christ. The area of Persepolis – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, comprehends one of the biggest and most important archeological site in the whole world. It is impressive how a civilization could design and realize a complex like Persepolis more than 2500 years ago. This ancient village was provided with an efficient system of drainage, piped waterways and flood outlets. Each structure had a function: audience halls, private residences, guards rooms, treasure houses, with a series of fortifications higher than ten meters protecting the area. Concept and Location Persepolis is located near Marvdasht village, 50 km northeast of Shiraz. The palace, located on a promontory projecting into the plain from a rocky hill at the foot of the northwest corner of the Mountain of Mercy, a holy mountain at that time, presents what may be the most awesome ruins of the ancient world. According to the testimony of Achaemenid documents (the Achaemenid Empire, also called the First Persian Empire, was based in Western Asia and founded by Cyrus the Great in 550 BC), the original name of the then new Achaemenid capital was Parseh. This was also the name of the nearby settlement and of the people inhabiting it. The name Persepolis is a Greek word meaning “City of the Persians”, and this is the appellation widely known and accepted in the West. However, in Iran the site is known as Takht-e Jamshid (the Throne of Jamshid), after king Jamshid, whose behests were carried out by demons. The name possibly derived from the popular belief in the supernatural origin of the structures. Construction and Functions By the time Darius the Great – the fourth king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire- undertook the construction of Persepolis in around 518 BC, the Persepolis palace was one of the Achaemenian buildings used for official ceremonies associated with the greatest national, royal, and religious Iranian festival of Nouruz, a symbol of the empire’s sovereignty over its far-flung dominions. Persepolis was conceived as a magnificent showcase of Achaemenid achievements, a fabulous repository of the most spectacular architectural and artistic achievements anywhere in the ancient world. With the power and wealth which had been accumulated in the country by that time, it should not surprise us that these ambitious goals were fully achieved. Persepolis was a great center of terrestrial power, providing an effective setting for invocation and worship. The city glorified the divinely-sanctioned dynasty, and was pervaded with the peculiar virtue of royal authority believed to be conferred by the power of Ahura Mazda (the name for the God of Zoroastrianism, the old Iranian religion), located at the very birthplace of the empire. Persepolis was its holy center, as are Mecca, Jerusalem, and the Vatican of their respective religious system today. Architecture and Art The architecture and art of Persepolis reveals an eclectic synthesis of forms gathered from all parts the Achamenid empire. However, it is astonishing that the resulting blend of so many styles and influences was original and coherent despite its eclecticism. From the intermingling of ideas and fashions, and under the supervision and planning of Persian masters, there emerged the so-called Achaemenid style, highly cosmopolitan and diverse on the one hand, and harmonious and concordant on the other. Mud-bricks supplied by Babylonians, cedar roof beams from Lebanon, precious materials from India and Egypt, gold from Sardis, and stone quarried nearby but carved by Lydians and Ionians, all united in a single passionate endeavor to create the magnificent complex of structures that was Persepolis. Conclusion Back in my school times I, like many, had the chance to study the origin of our cultures and the history of the Persian and Achaemenid empires. It has been my long-time dream to visit and see with my own eyes, at least once in my lifetime, the sculptures and buildings that nowadays can only be found in Persepolis. Being in person at a site that I had often seen in pictures has allowed me to better understand the heritage of a huge ancient civilization, and to feel the great vibrations behind it. To see a video of persepolis click HERE To read about my visit to the Vakil Mosque in Shiraz, click HERE. I hope this article of mine has drawn the readers’ interest, and that it will motivate people to plan a trip to Iran and a visit to such a gorgeous and unbelievable city of arts: Persepolis.

Concept and Location

Persepolis is located near Marvdasht village, 50 km northeast of Shiraz.

Construction and Functions

By the time Darius the Great – the fourth king of the Persian Achaemenid Empire- undertook the construction of Persepolis in around 518 BC, the Persepolis palace was one of the Achaemenian buildings used for official ceremonies associated with the greatest national, royal, and religious Iranian festival of Nouruz, a symbol of the empire’s sovereignty over its far-flung dominions. Persepolis was conceived as a magnificent showcase of Achaemenid achievements, a fabulous repository of the most spectacular architectural and artistic achievements anywhere in the ancient world.

Darius in Persepolis

Architecture and Art

the great art of Persepolis times

The architecture and art of Persepolis reveals an eclectic synthesis of forms gathered from all parts the Achamenid empire.

Conclusion

Back in my school times I, like many, had the chance to study the origin of our cultures and the history of the Persian and Achaemenid empires.

The Vakil Mosque is one of the most significant mosque in Shiraz, Iran. The 48 monolithic pillars join one another on top through vaulted brickworks, and the pillar shafts are carved in a spiral way and decorated in form of acanthus leaves at their capitals. The marble stone for these columns was brought from Azerbaijan and Yazd. The entire construction is made in a way that it achieves a linear acoustic that spreads all around the mosque surface. A master piece of sound technology, architectural beauty and stunning decoration. I started my visit at Vakil Mosque after I luckily met a local guide at the entrance of the compound. Shima is a professional, passionate and and certificated Iranian guide, and a Shiraz guide specialist: thanks to her deep insight, I could understand the magic history behind this great mosque. Should you need her services, you can contact Shima by email: tourist.city.shiraz@gmail.com Architecture and Art The Vakil Mosque occupies an area of 8,660 square meter, it is entered from the north through a recessed entrance, the upper vault of which is adorned with tiled moqarnas (a form of ornamented vaulting in Islamic architecture, the geometric subdivision of a cupola into a large number of miniature squinches, producing a sort of cellular structure, sometimes also called a honeycomb). The portal also features lavish tile-work, cable-shaped stone friezes, and fine calligraphy. Its 8 meter wings wooden gate is a copy of the original door from the Zand age broken by a cannon ball during the Qajar Dynasty (second part of 1700 ac). A vestibule behind the entrance has two passages which lead into the courtyard. The lower parts of the porches and arcades are faced with marble slabs, carved in relief, with splendid floral motifs. The mihrab (a semicircular niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction that Muslims should face when praying) is flanked by deep, tiled niches, carved at various elevations on either side. What attracted my interest most was the minbar (a pulpit in a mosque where the imam – prayer leader – stands to deliver sermons) on the right side. It is climbed by way of fourteen steps cut out of a single great block of marble. History book state that Karim Khan Zand (the founder of the Zand Dynasty and the Shah of Iran, ruling from 1751 to 1779) is reported to have joked that this minbar cost him more than if it had been made of pure gold. The lavish use of stone is an atypical feature for the Iranian mosque prior to the Zand period. Stones were used sparingly, and mainly for decorative purposes. This mosque is an historical religious monument that is extremely special for the Iranian people. If you travel to Shiraz, don’t miss this beautiful mosque. It is not an exaggeration to state that when you enter the Vakil Mosque, its architecture and art push you to release yourself from the material world and to think about the greatness of your soul. History of Vakil Mosque Vakil Mosque in one of the most beautiful that Karim Khan Zand created in Shiraz. It is significant not only as a major religious building of the Zand period, but also as the only important building of its kind to be built in late 18th century. The mosque you can see today is the result of several stages of construction and restoration. It was originally started late in Karim Khan’s reign during the high Victorian style developed under this monarch. The Vakil Mosque represents in plan and artistic style a perfect Zand edifice. All the features distinguish the Mosque from the preceding and subsequent architectural styles. It is remarkable for its generous spatial area and for the elegant proportions of its architectural units. The decorative treatments of the Zand religious buildings are also less conventional and more secular in type than that of the earlier mosques, bunches of flowers and bright colors being largely employed in the pottery works. The mosque area The Vakil Mosque is, unsurprisingly, a popular tourist destination for foreign both and Iranian people. The area around offers much more for the visitors to enjoy. If you like visiting cathedrals and mosques for their wealth of history and unbelievable beauty that can await you at every turn, then the Vakil Mosque should be high on the list of things you intend to see. The area around this historic center have so much to discover. All around the mosque, an intricate group of small roads create one of the most original markets of Iran, the Vakil Bazar. The Vakil Bazar is a group of many small and traditional shop selling a huge collection of different crafts and hand made manufactures and excellent gastronomy. Shima my guide invited me to test a few of those speciality, including the typical Shirazy ice cream. Conclusion Overall, my visit to the Vakil Mosque was enriching at a cultural level, and enlightening at the same time. Vakil Mosque is a very popular destination in a very nice and famous area of Iran. Shiraz is a must-see also for the nearby archeological area of Persepoli – CLICK HERE to know more about Persepoli. CLICK HERE To read about my trip to Iran.

Vakil Mosque in one of the most beautiful that Karim Khan Zand created in Shiraz.

The mosque area

The Vakil Mosque is, unsurprisingly, a popular tourist destination for foreign both and Iranian people.

Conclusion

Overall, my visit to the Vakil Mosque was enriching at a cultural level, and enlightening at the same time. Vakil Mosque is a very popular destination in a very nice and famous area of Iran. Shiraz is a must-see also for the nearby archeological area of Persepoli – CLICK HERE to know more about Persepoli.

My week at BaliSpirit Festival 2018 started when we landed at Denpasar airport on a warm afternoon. Outside, a long cue of waiting taxis frenetically offered their fares to our destination: Ubud. We bargained a ride and boarded the taxi. Bali roads are narrow and the traffic is usually murder, but we managed to get to our final destination, Ubud, in less than one hour. Ubud is an historical small city dotted with ancient hinduism temples and surrounded by rice field. Along the way, we noticed scores of small shops selling crafts of local manufacture: statues, wood carving, colorful blanket and more colourful items. BaliSpirit Festival grand opening kicked off at 7pm at the Yoga Barn, and after barely a few minute there, I felt so involved! All around us, artist and yogis coming from all over the world exchange words, and I immediately recognized some of my beloved teachers whom I had already meet in other festivals. The atmosphere was warm, everyone was relaxed and cheerful, and we felt at home and loved. The evening proceeded with a short presentation of what the week ahead would offer us. A few of the masters were introduced, and the special event continued with music and dances that involved everyone present. The rhythm was great and we all joined in the warm and friendly dancing. I was impressed by the number of kids running around, in a so peaceful, lovely and alcohol-free environment! The following day we ready to rock! A very convenient shuttle service brought people from Ubud to the festival grounds all day long. BaliSpirit Festival 2018 was hosted at the Bali Purnati Center, a twenty minutes ride from Ubud Town. Bali Purnat is a resort with huge garden grounds surrounded by rice field and submersed in the lush Bali nature. For this famous event, the organizers decorated and furnished the entire area with bamboo roofs and colorful tents. There were at least ten different pavilions and workshop areas, all of them isolated enough from the others in order to achieve a quiet atmosphere. BaliSpirit Festival is branded eco-friendly, as the grounds provide several differentiate trash bins and access to free water. There is free WiFi access in the whole aerea and a food court that serves a huge variety of delicious vegetarian and vegan food. Dishes are served in banana leaves and crafty, hand made leaf spoons. There is no plastic at all and participants seems enjoy this eco-friendly way to eat! Whith more than fifty yoga masters and thirty dance and movement artists, BaliSpirit Festival is indeed considered one of the most impressive festivals in the world! There are so many activities that I wished to attend, and I was helped on my choices by BaliSpirit Festival application that I freely downloaded to my smartphone. There, I got all the information and I was easily able to organize my daily schedule. BaliSpirit Festival lasted six days and seven nights. Workshop were divided in ten different groups: dance, daytime music, healing, kids and family, martial arts, massage, night time music, seminars and dharma talks, sound healing and breathe work, yoga and meditation. Not only I had a chance to practice my favourite activity, but most of all I also could get to know so many new workshop and techniques I had only heard about until then, and some that were completely unknown to me. My daily schedule was more or less the following: yoga and meditation from 8am to 10am, dance from 10am to 12am, a short break having a delicious vegan lunch while listening to the day music (everyday a cool different group), 2pm to 4pm workshop activity and 4pm to 6pm a rocky power yoga class or a relaxing meditation class, depending on how much energy was left in my body. At 6pm, after a full day of activities, I had a chance to shower in one of the many areas designed for rest and restore, and I was ready for the night music! But not until I had a delicious dinner at the food court. Once again, every evening I was spoiled and tried several different food, some dishes I had never tasted before, and others I knew already but cooked in a way that turns into a vegetarian even the biggest meat lover on the planet. BaliSpirit Festival was one of the greatest experience I could have! Spiritual feelings, awesome people and a huge amount of knowledge that you can get from so many artists in a cool natural environment! There is so much more to say about BaliSpirit Festival, so read on my articles about ARTISTS AT BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL and about BALISPIRIT FESTIVAL FOR KIDS. Namaste from BaliSpirit Festival.

Not only I had a chance to practice my favourite activity, but most of all I also could get to know so many new workshop and techniques I had only heard about until then, and some that were completely unknown to me.

One of the best decisions I have taken this year has been taking my five years old daughter Nadia to the BaliSpirit Festival, happening every year in the amazing Indonesian island of Bali. The advertising stated that it was a ‘family friendly festival’, but there I found out that BaliSpirit Festival is a real full-time campus for kids! BaliSpirit Festival management organized a friendly and safe area to host kids aged from two to twelve years old. In the area, at least twenty prepared and patient volunteers were busy entertaining kids with book colouring, face paintings, storytelling and several other activities. The center were hosting in kids from seven in the morning to eleven in the evening, with a short break between 6pm and 7pm. During the day, by following the schedule on BaliSpirit Festival App in the smartphone, parents could book special activities for their kids, like learning painting, active storytelling or yoga for kids. The teachers were not only volunteer but also accredited international artists. Let me tell you about some of them: Curly Kids Story-light UK Curly is a beloved children’s storyteller from the UK, on a mission to ignite joy in the hearts and imaginations of all. He has become well-known for his enigmatic performance tales that engage audiences in the infinite magic of story craft through improvisation, music, puppets and comedy. My daughter Nadia particularly loved Curly as he was so patient and available to play with her even after his scheduled activity was over. One night they spent at least an hour dancing reggae music in front one of the stage! For more information about Curly, check www.storylight.org Stephen Bennet USA ‘The Portrait Painter’ One of the most impressive artists at Kids zone was Stephen Bennett. He is a quite well-known American portrait artist the world over, and no wonder: he had so much patience and passion to share with all little kids attending is painting course. The objective of his workshop is to celebrate a local hero through the creation of a large portrait painting. Stephen conducted the workshop in the Kids Zone along with children and adults to create a portrait of Ibu Robin Lim, CNN Woman of the Year and founder of Bumi Sehat Birthing Center. The large canvas was divided up into several sections and then reassembled. Stephen workshop teaches about painting, colors, light and having fun while creating art. I later learned that Stephen has traveled to over 50 countries over the last 30 years. He seeks out indigenous people to capture their soulful faces and ritual adornments through colorful paintings on a grand scale. Bennett’s mission is to preserve and celebrate the world’s diversity through a unique style of realism using interpretive color. The focus of his paintings is on the eyes that invite us to enter and experience our common humanity. To know more about Stephen, check on www.stephenbennett.us Lela from USA Lela offered Mindful Awareness classes for kids. Lela studied Child Psychology and began her work with children as an Early Years educator for five years at UCLA, and this was her 4th year at BaliSpirit Festival. When I think of a class on mindfulness, huge mental work on understanding the meaning of this technique comes to mind. I therefore thought that to teach this discipline to kids was a kind of an impossible mission. I had to think again after seeing how Lela impressively managed to convince several kids in one time using games and stories. She was amazing at developing children attention, playfully achieve a balance, and explain compassion through awareness-based activities. Well done. Jasper Sircus Contact Improvisation Dance for Kids Bali Jasper Sircus is a yogi, a breath work facilitator, a musician, a dancer, an entrepreneur, a teacher, and a father engaged with many practices and traditions from different cultures that focus on presence, passion, and practicality. I had the feeling that Jasper knows exactly what the kids really like, and as the result his class, attended by so many happy boys and girls, was a great success. Jasper managed to keep all these little kids interested, and to get them to express their self with dance and funny movements. These are just a few of the artists involved in the kids zone area; there were many more I could not watch or write about, but overall I can say the quality of teachers was high. BaliSpirit Festival Kids Zone was not only a playground where our kids could learn and practice wonderful new activities, but also a center where parents could have interaction with world-wide educators and parents. The result of this experience was for me absolutely positive and the greatest feed back was from my own daughter: “Can we come back to BaliSpirit Festival next year, daddy?”

Lela offered Mindful Awareness classes for kids. Well done.

Jasper Sircus is a yogi, a breath work facilitator, a musician, a dancer, an entrepreneur, a teacher, and a father engaged with many practices and traditions from different cultures that focus on presence, passion, and practicality.
